For those people living in the Orlando area, I have a question. Are there any ice skating rinks, in safe areas that you know about? We will be staying at Disney and will have a car. Thanks!

Are you asking about fun, recreational, public skating -- or a good rink for freestyle ice time for competitive skaters?

There is a rink in Kississmee and one up I-4 called the Ice Den at the RDV complex.

Right off the Maitland west exit on the right behind Sam Sneads.

The Ice Den at the RDV sportsplex in Maitland is about 25-30 miles NE from WDW. It's all expressway, but you have to go through downtown Orlando to get there.

We're going to a major skating competition there Apr 13-15 (Florida Open), so if you need any info on that rink let me know and I'll respond. I know they have one professional-size surface and one Olympic-size.

There are several other ice surfaces in the Orlando-Kissimmee area, but I'm not familiar with them.

It may make a big difference whether you are looking for fun or serious skating.

If you can fit into the public session times on the MAIN rink at Ice Factory, that should be fine. The picture of public skating shown on the website is the main rink. It's standard 85' X 200' size.

Especially if you go for a morning or early afternoon session, you should have room to skate...or sufficient wall to cling to, depending on your skill level.

I wouldn't waste time driving down to Kissimmee for the Studio Rink, though. If you haven't seen one, you have no idea how tiny 45X85 is.

Just wanted to give you a quick report on the Ice Den at the RDV Sportsplex in Maitland, following our trip up there for the Florida Open figure skating competition last weekend.

O-M-G!!! What a beautiful facility Ice Den is!

The entire complex is world class and the figure skating facilities are really beautiful. Their "small" rink (used mainly for hockey) is the same size as the "main" rink in Kissimmee (85'X200'). Most of the figure skating takes place on a full Olympic rink (100' X 200'). That extra width makes all the difference in the world. Great place to skate.

(And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the Central Florida Figure Skating Club did a tremendous job of hosting the competition.)

If you can't make a public session on the Main Rink at the Ice Factory in Kissimmee, I would certainly recommend the Ice Den. It is well worth the drive...and it's not a bad drive at all -- I-4 all the way.
