I just googled what a gallon was in my language (3.78litres) and I worked out that in NZ we are paying $7.56/gallon for our cheaper petrol and rising

Though we are a nice wee small country in comparison and DH rides his bike to and from work daily - about 45mins-1hr each way - though when you compare it to driving the time he loses is less than 15mins - somedays it's actually quicker for him to ride instead of being stuck in traffic. He's also lost a heapload of weight and looks fantastic

I'm thinking of getting myself a bike with a trailer so I can carry my girls with me for shorter trips - park, shops etc.

Well we are up to $4.50 a gallon here, that's rounding up but by Wed. it will probably be that high. It needs to stop rising, it's just absolutely ridiculous. As for biking to work....ummmm, I work 20 miles from home, 1 way and there are NO sideroads to bike on, only freeways. DBF works 43 miles from home, 1 way. Again, all down freeways, not really easy to doable to bike it. BUT, if I did bike it I would look good!!!! LOL That extra weight would be gone so fast! It's tempting.....but really not doable.

We all go to DLR to get away from "reality" or realize how "real" that reality is and that is great. But, in certain times we need to leave Fantasyland once in awhile and really understand what is going on in the world. This situation is not changing and there NEVER will be cheap gas again. I don't have a quick solution neither does anyone else since theres so much varying information out there, but prepare for a major change in America folks and enjoy our love for Disneyland,WDW,etc..while we can as it may not be accessible very much longer. EVERYTHING rides on wether or not we can get oil,and how much. Let's just pray we can get a couple more good years of traveling from what we got now. I do thank God for DLR though when I see the trends and watch the news,because it really does give us an exit stragedy from the real world for a bit!

o lucky yous,were paying througth the nose for it over here,we pay for diesl £1.30 a litre that $9.70 a us gallon so buy your reconing it gould be over $11 for us in aug

My husband I were watching the news earlier, in Redwood City, at one of their Shell stations, gas reached $4.99/gallon for the cheap stuff. My husband decided today it was time to get his bike out and start pedalling to work. (Driving time is only about 5 minutes for him, so biking would be 15-20 tops).

Just heard on the radio that what we are paying for gas is going to go way up. Reason is the oil we are using now was bought at around $85 a barrel and they are now paying around $129 a barrel. So thats where the $8 comes from. Dont know if it's true but thats what is being said.

$3.98??? Where do you live. Its $4.38 out here in California and that's for the cheap watered down stuff.

I just checked prices right now (we live half a block away from a convenience store), and prices here are: $3.99 for regular unleaded; $3.94 for unleaded plus. And it may even be a few cents cheaper at the Casey's across town; for some reason, their gas prices are always a cent or two less than this convenience store.

We originally weren't going to visit the beach on our upcoming trip to DLR, but decided we'd better since---with the high gas prices and bad economy--who knows when we'll ever get out of the Midwest again. It may very well be our last chance to see the ocean for quite a while.

Here you have to drive to things, very little in the way of public transportation. And the way I grocery shop there is no way I'm going to do that on a bike. LOL I know I've cut out any extra driving where I can, if we don't need to go we don't! LOL We have talked about buying one of those scooters that can go 50 mph, just for DH to get back and forth to work. We know someone that picked one up for around $2k. Talk about great gas milage.

It's quite scary how things are going though, something needs to be done. We've got businesses closing here left and right. Lots of people are losing their jobs, and with the cost of EVERYTHING going up. It's just scary!

In Sydney, we pay AU$1.55/litre for basic petrol that includes 10% ethanol, around US$6.20, and the price goes us for premium types.

My DH doesn't work far from me, so we car pool, in a Honda Jazz (Honda Fit in US), around 25 kms/16 miles each way. We spend around $40-45/week at present including any weekend running around etc that we do. Although it can take 10% Ethanol, we prefer premium.

Anyway, a little back a little more on topic, as a family, we have a very fuel efficient car and don't do many kms in relative terms, so we don't pay a lot. According to the NRMA, a major motoring body, an average tank at present is $80/week which is just over 10% of the average after-tax weekly wage of $750. We are seeing less and less traffic on the road each day, our travel times has come down by around 1/3.

Three months ago it was taking an hour each way, most days of late around 35-40 minutes. Everyone is going on the trains/buses.

For general comparison, and how costs are different, we have (basic) health care federally funded for 1.5% of our gross wage -private is additional, but depending on your view point may not be necessary. In round figures, about $30 max for a prescription, some are a lot cheaper, and for those on low income around $4 max for a prescription. Where as a lot of people think that petrol in Australia and NZ is very expensive, we pay less in other areas such as health care (assuming so for NZ as they have a similar system), electricity, water, and so forth. The average wage in Sydney is $55,000, take home around $750 week.

I believe what you heard on the radio was false as a barrel of oil is already at $138. If a barrel of oil was $85 right now, We wouldnt be paying this kind of money. The gas would be in the $2 to $2.50 range for a gallon of gas.

That's $138/barrel is all for oil they haven't drilled yet. Part of the problem is investors are putting a ton of money in the futures market, which is definitely driving the price up. I'm not sure how far ahead it is but the cost of the oil that went through the refineries and is sitting at our gas stations definitely wasn't $138 since they haven't even drilled it yet, but I think they like to price it that way .

In Canada our cost is at 1.44 a litre today witch is about 5.76 a gallon. And hey! We aren't even dependent on foreign oil ha-ha.

It's almost $6/gallon where I live in BC. We pay by the liter, so right now it's about $1.45/liter x 4 = holy cow and going higher!
