Ok a bit about us. We are a family who enjoy the drive down to Florida. For the last 4 years we have had to drop of our dog at my parents house in Niagara so it only made sense to go thru Buffalo and down to the I95.

This year we have a neighbour watching the dog so we can make a choice and drive thru Detroit instead and head down the I75.

Going down the I75 will add about 200 kms to our trip but the thought of seeing some different scenery might make this worth while. We love the adventure of seeing new sights and cities as well as finding awesome local food locations on the way down.

Also if the speed limits are higher the extra 200kms would not be much more in time if I can go faster.

I need opinions,

1. which trip is more scienic?
2. how bout road conditions in case of weather?
3. food choices?

any thing you think of that could help make this call....

Thanks

Okay, we've done both, and I think I can help you.
First of all, if you take I-75, I STRONGLY recommend you buy Dave Hunter's ALONG I-75. It will take you from Detroit to the Florida border, and it is positively stuffed to the brim with all manner of useful info, including known speed traps, construction zones, food and lodging choices, interesting things to do just off the Interstate, and much, much more. We found this book to be absolutely indispensable and we wouldn't take the trip without it. It eats miles: you probably won't even notice the extra 200km.
Also, our experience with the eastern route contradicted what everybody here said to expect. It took us fifteen hours of driving time just to get to Charlotte. I-75 coming home took about 45 minutes LESS time for us. Your mileage may vary.
As for the routes--I-75 is considerably less scenic...and probably a good deal safer in winter. There are MANY more food and lodging options along 75.
Personally, I'd rather take I-75, but again, you're going to get many people recommending your normal route.

Okay, I could write a book here! :rotfl2:

Hubby and I drive down to Florida at least twice a year; in fact, we are currently getting ready for our late January getaway, returning in March. :cool1:

This is what we do: up until a day or two before we leave, we keep our options completely OPEN. We base our route decision on the weather reports for the various interstates; here's the link:
http://www.weather.com/activities/driving/interstate/index.html

This site has been very valuable for us. When you choose an interstate, you can then click on each city, and see the forecast. Starting about 10 days away from our scheduled day to leave, we keep a close eye on the places where we would be driving through on Day One.

Now, having said that, most of the time we take I-75 down, but we rarely take it coming home. On the trip back, we typically drive I-77/I-79. When we leave Florida, we always go up I-95 to Savannah GA, where we spend the night and enjoy a great seafood dinner (wild Georgia shrimp are amazing!). Then we head to Charlotte NC the next day for lunch, then continue northward and spend the night in West Virginia. We then head for Buffalo and spend the night there, then get up in the morning, do our grocery shopping, then cross the border and head home.

(Edited to add: we know we could do this faster, and at times we have; however, we prefer to do it this way, knowing we have time for any off-interstate adventures that beckon......)

So, back to the trip down. Heading south on I-75, you have a couple of options; we have done them all. Firstly, you can stay on I-75 all the way to Florida, then, depending on where you're staying, either stay on I-75 or take I-10 east over to I-95 (we stay in the Cocoa Beach area, so this is what we do).

You don't have to do that, though, especially if you want to end up on I-95. At Knoxville TN, you can head west on I-40 over to Asheville NC, then head south on I-26 until you get to I-95. Or, stay on I-75 until you get to Macon GA, then take I-16 east over to I-95 (if you keep going on I-16 and go past I-95, you'll go straight into Savannah). Since hubby and I often spend three or four nights in Savannah before we head on down into Florida, this is what we have done several times. This past January, we spent the night in Macon and then instead of going east on I-16, we instead took US-80 across Georgia, from Macon to Savannah. It was a great drive.

We have done the drive down in January many times, and our experience is that the most questionable day for driving, weather wise, is Day One. We leave very early in the morning and by the time we stop for the night on Day One, we are usually south of anywhere that would have very bad weather. Of course, this isn't carved in stone, so that is why we watch the weather reports with an eagle eye before we go.

I-75 has some scenic moments in Kentucky and Tennessee but, mostly, it is definitely NOT a trip to take for scenery.

I STRONGLY recommend the Along I-75 book by Dave Hunter, as suggested by the previous poster. It is a WONDERFUL book and invaluable for the trip.

As for food choices, I will respond back later with that. We have many places marked now as "favorites" in our GPS, so I'll need hubby to get that out.

Well, I see I've blathered on here long enough. Have fun on your trip---hubby and I are road trip aficionados and we always enjoy our trips down and back! :)

Fantastic,

Thank you for the great responses. I think that unless the weather has anyting to say about it we will go for the I 75 route and change things up a bit. I have seen the "along the I75" book and will be picking one up tomorrow.

Worse case if I do not like the 75 on the way down I will go the 95 on the way home. :thumbsup2

We will be leaving the North Bay area around 3pm on the 19th and hope to get a good 9 hours of driving in the first night.

We always take I-75 when we travel to Florida by car. We live just west of Toronto in Milton and have tried both ways but prefer I-75. It's an easier drive and takes about the same amount of time even though it is a bit farther. We cross at Sarnia instead of Detroit, just seems quicker and easier at the border.

We take I-75. Starting in London we could go either way too and it is about the same distance. Having travelled to several different parts of the US, we find I-75 is usually quicker for us. My BIL/SIL will be travelling with us (separate car) this March and they want to try I-77/95 coming home but we will make that decision as we are leaving based on what the weather is supposed to be like.

Another vote here too for the Along I-75 book. It is filled with lots of awesome information. We discovered it on our 2008 trip after my MIL gave us their copy. My DH loved reading about all the different stuff and pointing out interesting items to DS along the route. We also used it to stop for meals and find hotels for the night. So much nicer to get off at an exit where you know you will find a restaurant you will be able to eat at (DH & DS can be picky sometimes!) or at an exit that has several hotels to find a room for the night (yes, we have had to try several hotels to find a room in the past).

Unlike PP, we prefer to cross at Windsor/Detroit. Any time we have crossed at Sarnia/Port Huron has been a hassle and added about 30-45 minutes to our trip. We also try to plan to cross at a time that is less busy if possible too. (As a side note, Google maps and Mapquest both say it is slightly longer (20kms) but slightly faster (10mins) to cross at Sarnia/Port Huron and travel down I-94 to Detroit than it is to travel the 401 to Windsor and cross directly.) We tend to find that there are fewer booths open at Port Huron so the lines are longer and the border guards grill you for a good 5-10 minutes before letting you proceed. It is also the only border point we have been asked to provide proof of our reservation while travelling. We cross at Windsor/Detroit, Lewiston and Buffalo quite frequently without any hassles at all.

I would highly recommend going on I-75 because in my opinion it's the most direct route when going to Walt Disney World.

great answers everyone. Thank you! I am reading my copy of "along I-75" now as I type this.

Looking forward to a great trip.

Thank you! We are doing the drive as well and did not consider I-75 until this thread. This helps a lot.

Don't forget he also came out with another book that includes all the Interstates in Florida. So you can know in advance what restaurants, gas stations and etc are located off the I-75 exits in Florida.

Just got back from the I 75 route, which is the way we always go (since we live right at the Port Huron border - which we never have a problem at, incidentally).

We drove with both the Along I 75 and the Florida Interstate book, and had a great drive (as usual!) We even took Dave Hunter's advice on one of the side trips (for the first time) and loved it (Norris Dam - highly recommend it if you have time on the way back!). The kids have done the drive so many times now that they know all the landmarks, and we always find it interesting enough. The florida welcome center is always a must-stop for us, free orange juice and fun photo up! Have a great drive!!

Thanks,

I have already read the book from cover to cover and just bought a couple of days ago. I know I am a geek :lmao: We are planning to make Cinci the first night and the do a quick side trip to the aquarium there. It looks real cool online and it will break up the drive a little for the kids.

My family and I took his advice and started going to Mayfield Dairy in Athens, Tennessee off exit 52.

He recommends two hotel chains--Drury Inns and Jameson Inns. Both are great, no frills, reasonable places to stay. Drury gives you so many free perks with your room that it boggles the mind: free light supper to go with the free breakfast; free alcohol (yes, you read that right); free all-you-can-drink pop; free phone calls to Canada. We've stayed at two now and the only issue is their bedding--not the best. Easily forgiven amongst all the freebies.
Now Jameson--a decent continental breakfast, no other real perks, but the room was larger than standard with INCREDIBLY comfortable beds and five (!!!) pillows. Best of all with them, if you are unsatisfied in any way, your stay is free.
I'd trust Dave Hunter: he's been doing that drive so long he can probably do it asleep.

i was reading his glowing recomendations about drury inns that now i want to stay in one. The only problem is I stay free at all Choice hotels with my accumlated points.

With all of those perks I am almost willing to pay for a night just to experience a stay there,:rotfl2:

We just got back from our drive to Florida. We took I 95 and 77 this time and it was very scenic. Our kids loved the tunnels in WV. We have also done I 75 and enjoyed both trips. I would definitely reccomend 1 75 if there will be freezing conditions because the roads are always wet in WV due to the fog and clouds through the mountains.

WARNING: Watch out for deer if you are driving through PA at night. We counted 10 dead deer on the highway and a vehicle in front of us hit a deer killing it and totalling their car.

Hotels: We stopped for dinner and found a wifi hotspot to book a hotel with priceline. We never paid more than $50 a night + fees ($62), we then drove a few more hours to our destination. It was great!! We will do this again in the future.

Enjoy your trip!!

Done them both and I-75 wins for us. Although in theory it's longer it really worked out taking us the same amount of time. I love the rest stops on the I-75, clean and clearly marked so you know how long until the next one. The highways are nice in most areas and it is such a straight foward route.

Also I highly reccomend the "ALong the I-75" , I would not travel without it. We borrowed it fromt he library for several of our trips but Santa got me my own copy this year:thumbsup2.
