I71/I81 near Wytheville, VA

Please help...
Has anyone else been stuck in a traffic jam heading north near Wytheville?

When driving north on I77 approaching Wytheville, VA, on a Saturday afternoon in summer, the traffic is horribly backed up. Usually for about 10-12 miles of crawl, waisting 1-2 hours.

The reason is b/c the multiple lanes of I77 merge into one lane to enter I77/I81 for a few miles. It is a stupid situation, that goes unnoticed except in heavy summer vacation traffic on a Saturday.

Does anyone know of an alternate route around this mess?

I take 81 through/past Wytheville (no 77) several times a year. I have never run into any traffic problems except in the winter when you might have to travel through some snow.

We always take exit #24; right before the new river bridge...Then take US route 52 north (Fort Chiswell Road)....You will come out at the BP station in Wytheville (exit 80 off of I-81/77). (15 minutes)
