The Flu that everyone has...

Seems to me, that everyone, says "I'm sick I've got the flu"...but is it REALLY the flu? The only way to tell is by the lab test, so does everyone REALLY get tested?

I just wonder if everyone is paranoid because it seems EVERYONE has it, when in fact, I'd be willing to bet that 1/2 the people with "the flu" really dont have it at all?

Friend of mine emailed and said "her whole family has the flu" so I said, really did you go to "ABC LAB"...or "DEF LAB" (we dont have this test done at docs, we go to a lab...) and she said, uh no, I just feel crappy and know its the flu.

The flu will come and the flu will go, I saw on CNN yesterday that Colorado has peaked, and new cases are going down....thats a good thing...seems that maybe this year the real flu season might be shorter, and peak sooner. that'd be good

My DS had classic flu symptoms and even his doctor thought it probably was. He did the test to know whether to start the treatment or not. We took the sample to the lab and it was negative for influenza. I think I read somewhere that something like less than 20% of the tests done for probable cases of the flu actually are influenza. My DS has actually never been this sick, even when he did have the flu in a prevous year. The chills, fever, aches...the whole thing. But, it was not the flu....so unfortunately, he can still get that....



Will labs do the test without a physician's order??? Appointments with the doctor are pretty hard to come by around here these days.

I dunno if they'll do it without docs orders...however a good friend of mine has a home daycare, and of the 5 kids there, 3 are sick...2 (same family) were tested, and negative and the 3rd was not. I know that these 2 called the doc with symptoms, doc sent them to the lab, THEN to doc's after the lab....

I guess I'd want to know for sure what I had, not just assume it is or it isnt...ya know what I mean.

If she just feels crappy, maybe any of these causes that are giving her the diarrhea, none the flu though.
