buy a huge motorhome and travel all over the US with my DS7. (home school him of course). Then when I finished with the USA, I would travel the World by plane, train and ship. Wouldn't that just be the coolest!:goodvibes

What do you wish???

I know a family that took a year off. They got a motorhome, left one January, traveled out west and into Alaska and came home the following January. The mom homeschooled their sons for the year. I think it took courage to do this and I thought it sounded awesome! They loved it and I think they still wish they could do it again.

Actually, our family packed up our minivan and did a trip around the country for 6 weeks one summer. It was one of the best trips I've ever been on (not to mention it was our first time to WDW!). We covered basically the perimeter of the states but did not venture into the middle very much.

So maybe someday!

It does not take courage to take off in a RV, IT TAKES $$$$$$$$!

Money is a big thing too. But I always loved watching that show on TV where the family lived out of their travel trailer in different cities. The mom would substitute as a school teacher in the area or help out some how, I forget what the dad did. And both kids would be home schooled between the cities, and would sometimes attend classes if their mother was teaching.

It was along the lines of Touched By an Angel, but I can't think of the name.

I'm sure any kid would learn more history on a trip across the US than from any book. As well about nature and science. And those are the kinds of things that would last a life time.

We lived in our motorhome for 4 months while our house was being built. Prior to that, we'd never stayed in it longer than a week at a time. I don't know how people can live in them. We had slide out rooms; it was good sized, but cabin fever set in. I never wanted to use it again and we sold it.

Promised Land with Gerald McRainey. It was a spin off of Touched By An Angel.

I think there's a huge difference between travelling the country and being someplace new all the time vs living in it for four months in the same spot.

This one sounds perfect to me! :thumbsup2

We are kinda, sorta going to do this and I am so excited!! The husband gets a month long sabatical and we decided to do the rv thing for entire month. We all love road trips and want to see more of the US, and we travel well together. So we'll start with the redwood forests and then just go where evre looks interesting.

Don't think for a min. that they survived on her subbing in various towns. They survived because they were being PAID to be on TV.

So, the kids would go to school for a day or two and then homeschool again? Here it takes weeks to be approved as a substitute teacher not to mention several days to get your kids records and things sent and get the kids enrolled. You can't just walk in and drop your kids off for the day.

Oh, wait, I am assuming this is a reality show, but maybe this is a made up show with a made up family who never really lived that way? If so, I assume you are referring more to a fantasy than actual life.

About 10 years ago, me, my mom and dad took about 3 weeks and drove from NC to Las Vegas. It was a great trip! We went on I-20 and came back on I-40. There was so much to do and see. My father is no longer with us and I'm so glad to have gone on this adventure with them. Now I want to take DS with me!!!!!

Yeah, no, it was a fictional show and I enjoyed it when it was on.

My dream has always been to get an RV and full-time in it. I already homeschool the kids, so money is the current barrier. I have talked about buying the RV and full-timing at Ft Wilderness ;) but I don't think that's going to happen anytime in the near, near future. 5 years is a possibility (and a goal), however.

I still need to visit North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming to have seen all 50 states, and DDs need several west of the Mississippi to finish their 50, so I'd like to be able to do that. I've been to 30-some countries, so don't feel the need for international travel as much, but would be happy to take DDs to some of my old favorite overseas haunts. I'm just not sure I want to see how much things have changed...:rolleyes1

Also, just FYI for anyone interested, a lot of how this fictitious family survived was a real concept called "Workamping" where people who FT in an RV can pick up seasonal or temporary work helping out at the campsite or local parks. I know people here at WDW who workamp in the national parks over the summer, then come to WDW to work for the holiday season, sometimes living at FTW, but sometimes staying locally at a "snowbird"-oriented camp ground.

Yes it's a fictional show. And I'm sure most watchers knew back then that it wasn't even possible to do that in reality. There was a time way back when, that almost all shows on TV (free tv, not cable) were fictional stories, and the closest you got to "reality" were game shows.

I've pretty much seen every state east of the Mississippi, except for the New England states. I've traveled once to Canada in the dead of winter. And then I've flown to California.

One of my greatest regrets is that we didn't do this when we had the opportunity.

DH had the perfect work opportunity that would afford us traveling for a year. We already homeschool our kids so that wouldn't be an issue. Our problem was that we had a lot of sick close family at the time and we felt we needed to be here for them.

Now our kids are much too old to take this kind of trip. At 15 and 13, they would hate it since they would have to give up activities and their ever important social life. At 5 and 7, they wouldn't have really cared as much. However, I do not think they would have learned nearly as much at such young ages. As teens, they truly enjoy visiting places like DC and Boston for the education. When they were younger, they had the attention spans of a gnat so I doubt they would have really soaked in the history which was our main reason for the trip.

DH and I still hope to do this with just the two of us when the kids are away at college.

We are in the process of doing something similar. Our daughter is 8 now, and we would love to introduce her to different cultures, so I am applying to teach overseas, while my husband, who is in seminary, will work with a mission organization. Both my husband and I spent several years living in other countries, and we both want our daughter to have tha opportunity.
