I was stuck in an elevator!

I was once stuck in a 6'x6' elevator with DH and two Turkish men whose personal hygiene was not the same as most Americans. I started to hyperventilate until I realized I was taking in more of the not-so-fresh air. I then just breathed shallowly until we were rescued about 1/2 hour later. Not an experience I'd wish to repeat!

I have been stuck in the elevator of my building (also on a college campus) 3 times now. Each time it has been on a Saturday and I have been the only one inside. Each time thankfully I have been able to pry the doors open and squeeze my way out. I can't tell you how many times people get stuck in these things each week they are pretty scary elevators.

I've been stuck in one before for about 30 minutes. I was not a happy camper, nobody would call 911, they just kept insisting to let the hotel maintenance take care of it. Eventually they did. I was not a happy camper.

Man, I have been stuck in elevators SO many times! :lmao:

We lived in one apartment building when I was a kid where it would let you in, but then it wouldn't let you out. You'd have to sit there and wait until someone came alone and pressed the button. Then the door would open and you could run out.

I NEVER tried to escape when the elevator was stuck. And I don't recommend anyone else do that, either. Don't try to pry open the doors. Most elevators these days have safety locks, but back around 1980 or so, a kid in my town got stuck in an elevator and tried to crawl out. The elevator suddenly dropped and killed him. Another person lost a limb. There's no way you'll catch me trying to pry elevator doors open!

If I had a cellphone, and I'd tried every other means of contacting someone, I would certainly not hesitate to call 911. That seems like a reasonable use of the service. :thumbsup2

Glad you are okay and it worked out. I say you did the right thing.

Many many years ago, I was about 10-11 I was visiting my grandparents who lives in an old apartment building in the Bronx. (I loved visiting them, but thats another story) Anyhoo, my sis and I got in one of the elevators and it stopped. The doors partially opened and we were between floors  talk about freaked out. We could see out above us, and screamed our heads off. It felt like forever, more like 20 minutes. Do you know that to this day, I avoid them when I can. They just freak me out, especially when they are small and in older buildings, gives me the CREEPS big time :scared1:
