I was made to feel like a Karen today.

I went out to eat for my birthday this past Saturday to a Saltgrass. Spent 200 for 3 people, server was amazing. I intended to use my birthday reward, and gift cards. The manager took the check to do the gift cards since the server was seated a large party. The manager confirmed I was using my birthday reward. Well, the computer glitched and while she applied it didn't take off the $25. The manager did not hand me back the empty gift cards, or my select club card. I didn't realize she didn't hand me back my card because I was trying to figure out why my total was higher than it should have been. Had to leave because my dad was outside waiting. I don't drive.

Manager called me 10 minutes later telling me she forgot to give me my select club card back. I mentioned the reward not showing up, she said she would put it back on one of the e gifts, and that she was holding my card for me in the office when I could get by. She thanked me and hung up before I could tell her anything else.

Of course she never put the money back on one of the e gift cards, so I just said I am not sweating it. I went online and request a new select club card, it asked my why. I said the restaurant kept the card.

Well the restaurant called me back today. They kept said they would have mailed me my card. I said it was okay I requested a new one. Then he said my reward was still on my card, I said I know it was, but it is going to expire, and it was fine. I told him I didn't drive and wouldn't be able to make it back up there. I said I had a great server. I said I was ok and I understood it all happening because it was a Saturday night and busy. I made sure to keep my voice polite and positive. He said he would mail me a gift card; I said it wasn't necessary. He kept insisting, saying he wanted to give the gift card. His tone was that of he was just placating a tantrum.

That second call made me not want to go back to the restaurant at all. I completely understand how it happened and the computer glitch. I never said I wanted a refund or gift card to begin with. I just mentioned it to tell them the computer was glitching, which is what I told the first manager.

Edit: I never asked for a call back or even filed a complaint. I think when I ordered a replacement rewards card, it triggered a callback.

I would have just let them send you the card and waited a bit before requesting a new one if the new one didn't come soon-ish (by that I mean I would have asked how long they would have expected it to get to me and add a few days for a cushion). You're just talking about a reward card so it's not super time sensitive as far as I would think. And you didn't even care (truly in the end it seems) about the failed attempt at adding the reward.

The thing is the restaurant didn't actually keep the card. I'm guessing that out of the prompts on the request a new club card you saw that to be the most appropriate and maybe there wasn't another option but they called you pretty darn quick after you left and most people would probably have turned around if possible since it was only 10 mins to get it. Your issue is you don't drive but that's not something that can be laid on the restaurant. My guess is the restaurant gets a ding in situations like this where the club card is not given back to the customer and so they were really trying to get it back to you.

Are you a Karen? I mean not the way you described it BUT there's a point where a refusal to a reasonable, no harm, doesn't truly affect you type thing where the other party is making it right where you start to almost sound impolite on your end.

It happens where sometimes the restaurant either corporate policy for placating customers or store/franchise owner does it that they want to send you a coupon or in this case they really did sound like they were trying to make it right. I wouldn't have made such a big deal out of declining the new card, let them send it to you if they want to.

Ironically this would actually be a place I would probably be more likely to frequent again, a place (be it corporate policy or not) that cares enough to mail you your forgotten club card and then mail you a replacement gift card? Don't think that's common at all.

They weren’t treating you like a Karen. I managed a restaurant for years and it was common for us to make a nice gesture when customers were inconvenienced or had issues. That’s part of the hospitality business. We always want to make sure the customer isn’t left with a bad impression. We want to remedy any problem immediately, and if the problem cost the customer time or impacted the party’s meal together, then add in a bonus to make up for that as well.

The thing is they didn't offer to mail me the reward card to begin with. They hung up after they said I could pick it up. The mail only became an offer after I requested a new one online. And I really didn't care about the reward itself, just told them about the glitch so they could keep and eye out for it. I wasn't even upset that they accidentally forgot to give me back my rewards card, stuff happens and it was a busy Saturday.

I’m not 100% sure I follow but it sounds like the first person dropped the ball a little, and on your second contact that manager or customer relations person wanted to fix it. So they rectified the original issue (the person hanging up before you were able to request it be mailed) and added the gift card as a token for you needing to reach out again.

What was funny, was when I left on Saturday I didn't have a bad impression. I completely understand computer glitches happen, busy Saturday nights happen. I even told him that, I told him I had a good time and a great server.

Yeah personally I don’t think they thought of you as an unreasonable customer. More likely just wanted to put things right in the way they could.

I don't know what made you feel like you were being treated like a Karen. Sounds like the manager was on top of customer satisfaction, when they had the chance to catch up. :confused3
His tone was that of someone talking down a tantrum. Which I was not throwing, or I would ever throw.

Maybe his tone was unintentionally off putting, but by reading the whole situation I don’t think you were treated like a Karen.

He was a manager that was fixing the mistake that was created on their end, not by you. That’s good customer service! He wanted to make it right.

I understand not liking the tone, but by everything you explained I don’t see how he read you as a Karen, or how you interpreted him seeing you as one.

I'm guessing corporate let the store know you requested a new card and the reason. They let the store know and that's why they called you back. Yes, he's was probably trying to pre-emptively appease you by giving you a GC for your troubles. That's not treating you "like a Karen".

Now, maybe the tone he used wasn't quite right, but making you not want to go back to the restaurant at all, when presumably you go enough to have a reward card? Sorry, that seems like an overreaction to me.

A couple months ago I ordered a six pack of cider along with my to-go meal from BJ’s Brewhouse. On the way to pick it up I got a call that the 6 pack was out of stock and I could either get something different or get a refund. I asked for the refund. When I get to the restaurant I am told they could give me a refund but it would take 2-3 days because it has to go through corporate. I said I really didn’t wanted something else and was offered a $25 gift card in lieu of the refund. To which I accepted as it was nearly double what the refund would have been. I didn’t make an issue of the refund and just accepted what I thought was a reasonable compromise.

People do steal gift cards and merchandise from stores so you are I don't think you are overboard to assert yourself.

I made a online return at a Macys store, the cashier refused to give me a returns receipt and I walked away like you did because I was being rushed. Turns out the cashier NEVER made the return to my card at all. Best I can figure is she put my stuff to the side and made the return later onto a gift card for herself and pocketed the gift card, it was nearly $100. Macys wouldn't help, store wouldn't help and credit card wouldn't help. Someone tried to do the same to me a few towns over at a TJ Maxx a few weeks later but I stood my ground and asked for a manager, funny how the receipt just magically worked. It is a scam, there are so many scams and holiday workers seem more inclined to run them - now I ALWAYS get a receipt and I won't be rushed.

What’s a Karen

Karen is the person who needs to speak to the manager. Now. 🤣

It's a term for someone who is making a big deal out of nothing, some perceived customer service slight, and demanding recompense for the supposed issue. The idea is that a person like this is often named Karen, though it could really be anybody - just a particular type of person.

This some years ago, we had bought gift cards for Texas Roadhouse for Christmas gifts. DS went to use it. Give it to server, she comes back and says gift card was blank. He asked for it back. She said I threw it away already. HMMM Another time, he used gift card and there was less than a dollar left of card, but again...didn't give card back.

Both times I contacted Texas and they took care of it.

You were lucky, Macy's sent me round and round in circles for weeks until I gave up. Now I know.
