Yup, great way to end a year don't ya think?
A little background info....I work as a carpenter apprentice(a pretty good one too!) I have been with a company(who shall remain nameless in the interest of fairness) for just over 3 years. From my perspective I was one of the minority of workers, who showed up almost every single day. Also bringing a positive attitude(most of the time) to the workplace.

So today I mentioned that we were almost out of something, My boss(one of many...lol) snapped back at me 'and why are you telling me this now' in a pretty rude tone. I questioned why more wasn't ordered in the first place.
He then begged me to 'please not do this' I appolagized and returned to my work for the day. End of the day comes and 2 bosses(we had too many bosses there imho) call me into the office and tell me I am finished. Said that was just the straw that yada yada... No notice, right after Christmas when the majority of normal people with families(like Me/DW/DD8) are pretty low on cash. Thankfully my DW is a great business Woman and she makes good coin :) <3 so I don't have to be too worried about our finances.

Anyway I am really disappointed being laid off right now as I really need money. The construction industry is very tough. I am a small guy, and people like to pick on the little guy. I can get over that, but to make it as personal as this and cause me to loose my job hurts. Especially when you can't really point out a lot of things gone wrong that I do. In fact I know that I do above average work. I have rent payments, as well as a monthly vehicle payment which together is about $1k

I can't let this get me down though because in just 8, yeah eight days; I am off to Disney World for our first trip as a family together. Just reading that sentence on the computer screen makes me smile:)

Bosses suck....just wanted to vent, thanks guys:santa:

 Definitely a tough time of year for a lay off. On to bigger and better things in the New Year. I hope you all enjoy your vacation!

I'm so sorry! Do you know why they did it? It couldn't have been because of one comment surely.

Ugh, the work world is a cold place. :( Enjoy your trip. :)

sorry to hear, it does sound like you have a great attitude about it though, i hope you can stay optimistic! :goodvibes

I'm so sorry. Glad that your DW is so helpful financially, though!

Surely there's some sort of job protection that covers you against something as strange as what you described?

I know how you feel, I was laid off last April from I job I really loved and it was tough, luckily I did find another job but man that feeling of losing your job really stinks. Good luck and have a FANTASTIC trip.

Sounds like the boss just took that one comment as a way to get rid of you. They were probably planning on getting rid of someone and just used that as an easy excuse.

Thanks for the support guys. I am confident I can get another job...like was said, it is tough to get laid off. Especially for something so insignificant...It's like my bosses are still stuck in high school, still calling people names, calling people down, and generally unappreciative of the hard work we do for them.

Well I thought that too, but I guess since I am a construction worker, I have no rights to things like notice for a lay off. Pretty lame if you ask me.

That's why you got laid off, because you don't belong there. Someone is looking out for you. Last year one of my favorite managers got laid off and it was "performance related" (basically, he didn't tolerate office bull). He was replaced by someone else around the holidays. Turns out, my manager ended up getting a better job that offered him exotic travel around the world and he and his wife adopted a baby and are happier than they've ever been....all because he got fired.. ;)

....hey, out with the OLD, and in with the NEW..........when God shuts the door, he always opens a window...;) ....I know it'll be easier said than done, but, enjoy your vacation, where you will be with people who love you and the BEST PLACE ON EARTH! Hope that 2010 brings you on a fruitful journey...

That is really tough, especially at this time of year. It's nice you'll be able to get away with the family, though, and then 2010 is sure to bring you better. :)

I know it stinks right now, but there is something better out there waiting for you.

That stinks...but I am a firm believer that when God closes a door he opens a window and there is a better job waiting for you.
I have a really hard time with my boss but I keep thinking I need the job and I really can't go to another job and make what I make here.
I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Have fun on your trip.

I went this morning to another local project(new fire hall being built). I have worked for this company before too, and new the site foreman. Bad news is because of the cold winters we get, there is nothing being done outside until it warms up in a few months. He did say I can still check in at the office when I get back to see what is happening, but it doesn't look too promising.
I could draw unemployment ins. until the building season picks up again in the spring but that would be just scraping by and putting a lot of pressure on my DW which I know she does not need. There is a few more options I have around town for large projects...hospital, as well as a new jail being built. So I will check there, and as a last resort; I could ask my Dad for some work. He is a general contractor dealing almost totally with residential homes. He does renovations, additions and stuff like that. But the problem there is he does not work full time. Being an old fart(lol) he likes to take it easy. Just a week after we leave for Disney, He and my Mom are off to Cuba for a while.

Anyway right now I am done looking for work, until I get back. Hmmm...maybe I should start packing. I leave on the 7th!

:grouphug: gee thanks guys :)

I am sorry to hear about your job. Just remember when one door closes, another will open. Hopefully, for a bigger and better opportunity for your career.

Have fun and enjoy your trip. I am sure you will find a little magic.

Start your own carpentry business! It sounds like you can undercut your old employer on price since you won't be paying for all of those bosses. :thumbsup2
