Have you heard of this? A girl at work went to one in her town. A woman comes to the house, you bring your gold and sip wine and have cheese with girlfriends while this woman estimates the value of your old gold and then offers you cash for it. The girl at work took a charm that an exboyfriend gave her and left with $150. I am invited to one of these now, but Im a little nervous. I am not going to give anything of sentimental value. I did find several broken chains (I think most moms have a multitude of broken necklaces!!!) and a ring from an ex.

Anybody have any input for me? TIA~!

These gold parties are all the rage. I have have friend who is making a killing doing this parties. The parties are legit and if you have old gold you don't want or can't use, it is a good way to get a little extra cash. The person evaluating the gold will pay you different prices per gram depending on whether the jewelry is 10K, 14K etc. I sold some old earrings that were broken and came out with 80 dollars.

I would rather go to this kind of party than a Pampered Chef or Mary Kay one where I end up spending money! This is an invitation I would accept !

I know! A party where you don't have to sit there and be embarrassed by the dopey scripted drivel that the reps have to spew, or buy a candle or a basket for $50 that you can get at Target for $20. It sounds good and my friend from work (the $150 charm girl) really wants me to come. My other friend keeps up with the "beware" and the "you'll get ripped off" business, but she is a Debbie Downer anyway. The way Im thinking is that these broken chains are doing me no good sitting all tangled in my jewelry box, but the cash would do lots of good in my "Vacation account!!!" I know that the party holder gets a cut, but that's fine by me. If I don't do it this way, I probably won't do it at all.

My cousin had one. I brought jewelry from old boyfriends, un matched earings, things I didn't like or were out of style (like 80's tri color stuff). I made $700! It was the best party I ever went to! We couldnt' wait for everyone to come over so we could be like how much did you make!

Jersey! Hey homey. Wow $700!!!! That is awesome!!! Can I ask you, how did they pay you? Cash? Check? OK, now I'm getting excited to bring my little baggie full of "junk" to this thing.

I had some broken necklaces, old chunky gold bracelets, mismatched earrings, a ring that was missing the stone and was rather..well ugly to begin with, stuff like that. I expected to be offered maybe $50 for it all. I was stunned to be offered $485! I say GO, take your junk and come home with some cash! :thumbsup2

Just a little update... I went to the party tonight. I brought with me a few things 2 thin rings, an old herringbone necklace and a few broken charms. I walked out with $150! I also booked my own party. And if I guarantee there will be a minimum of 8 guests there, she (the "gold person". LOL) will bring/order food for my guests. This kind of party kicks Tupperware's rear end. LOL.

My SIL went to one and took some of my old jewelry for me. I made $460!!

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

I made a whopping $88.

My sister however had thicker chains and more charms. She ended up with just over $400.

Well, if the chain is just sitting unused in your jewelry box, even if they tell you it's worth $25, that's still $25 in your pocket.

Do you know what company your friend is with? I ask because I wanted to start my own parties here in north Florida/Alabama, but not sure which one to go with. Could you message me your friends company info? TIA!

The Today Show just had a feature on these cash for gold companies this morning. Their advice was to take your gold to at least 2-3 local buyers personally and get estimates. They cited multiple incidents of gold getting "lost" in the mail when you send them in to the mail order gold buyers. They also cited that you only received 8-29% (IIRC) of the resale value if you use those types of companies that buy either through the mail or through home parties. You can probably find the feature on their website.

I've never been to one of these parties, but I did take some old gold to the local jewelry store last summer and came out with $750.

It's pretty easy to compare apples to apples with these things. Before I'd go to one of these parties I'd go to 2 local places buying gold. Lots of pawn shops around here do it. They often have the companies come in and do it for a weekend at local hotels. Ask for the price they're paying per gram for 18k, 14k, 10k. Then ask the party person, what are they paying per gram. Go with whomever is paying the highest. Just be sure that YOU weigh your items and know how many grams. That's one way that someone could take advantage, saying you had less gold than you did.

I'd feel much safer doing one of those parties that the mail-in thing. That way you get cash right then and there, and they can't tell you it got lost in the lail. If you don't think they are offering you enough, you can just hang onto it. As a pp said, I'd rather get $25 for the broken earrings in my jewelry box than just let them sit there. Of course, this is all from a silver person, so....

Do they take silver too? It is also a precious metal.

I saw the commercials on tv! Apparently they melt all the gold down to make other stuff.

I have no idea, but I should look into it. I have several silver chains that I don't wear...I just swap out necklace charms on my 2 favorite chains. It certainly wouldn't give me as much as if they were gold, but the parties sound kinda fun, and even if I walk away with $10, it's better than most parties where you spend $50!!!
