When my brothers and I were kids our mom would have us help bake a cake for Christmas eve dessert. We'd decorate it and have a great time. After dinner we'd sing happy birthday to baby Jesus and have the cake. DH and I are now doing this with DD. She's really excited about making the cake and it's helped divert her attention from Santa back to the real reason for Christmas.

That is a VERY neat idea, and a wonderful tradition. I really love traditions. (And your sig picture too). Merry Christmas.

That is a wonderful tradition to keep. It is important that we help them (we sometimes need to be reminded as well) remember the reason for the season and that it isn't just all about Santa. Have a wonderful Christmas.

With our DD8 and DS 10, we have always sung Happy Birthday to Jesus before we do anything else on Christmas morning. My kids 'remind' me if I forget (yeah, that'll happen!).

My DS10 has requested that we bake a cake for Baby Jesus, too. I was so touched. So, he and I will bake a cake tomorrow before Mass and will take it to the family dinner to celebrate. I love that he is intent on reminding everyone of the true meaning of Christmas.
Blessed Christmas, everyone!

My DH began sharing this tradition with me when we were newly engaged. His twist on it is a little different though. We bake the cake on Christmas Eve and then have it for Breakfast on Christmas morning!! I'm sure our little girl will love this when she's a little older.

They did this at DS8's school. One of the mothers in his class brought in a red velvet cake and the class sang Happy Birthday to Jesus and then they all ate cake.

This is a public school. I couldn't believe the teacher allowed it. I didn't mind at all but I'm sure some parent is going to raise a stink about it.

DD6 has already reminded me that we have to make the cake and sing. We do our's on Christmas day. We have cake for 3 days in a row this year....Jesus' birthday (Thurs), DD's birthday with grandparents (Fri, the real birthday) and DD's birthday with friends (Sat). On Friday we do an ice cream cake....I can't take 3 days of regular cake.

What a wonderful tradition. We always read the christmas story from the bible on christmas eve.

Thanks for sharing. Sounds like a wonderful idea - just might have to use it myself. Thanks again.

That's a nice tradition :) (I just wanna say your daughter is SO adorable!)

We do this at church. Two Sundays before Christmas, all the classes up to middle school meet in the fellowship hall together for Jesus' birthday party. They decorate the trees with ornaments they made in class and eat birthday cake. And each child brings an unwrapped present appropriate for a child his/her own age. The gifts are given to the battered women's shelter for the moms to wrap and give their children.

Our family Christmas Eve tradition is for DH to read the Christmas story from the children's bible and The Night Before Christmas while the whole family is sitting in front of the fire place drinking either egg nog or hot chocolate.
