like frozen taco meat, meatballs in sauce, etc. we will be flying into MCO
2 1/2 hr flight and renting our own car. so lets say our room isn't ready does
okw have a freezer/fridge where we can store these items so they don't go bad if our room isn't ready??

I always take frozen meat/some precooked stuff on trips (to Maui so far-6 hour flight). I put the frozen food in a soft sided smallish cooler and may add one of those ice packs. Never have had any problems nor melted food.

If your room isn't ready you can ask the bell desk to keep your food in their cold locker.

thanks everyone :thumbsup2 to save on costs I would rather bring down some food instead of cooking it there, hey I'm on vacation you know:rotfl2:
We still go out to dinner quite often but not every day :thumbsup2

When I first read this I thought "that sounds crazy!" But it's actually an excellent idea, especially if packaged the way debbiepump described. I'd much rather make taco meat and spaghetti sauce at home than at Disney!

Even better, I think my sister and her family are driving from Alabama...maybe I can convince her to cook... :rotfl:

I've done it before also. :thumbsup2

I wanted real Texas BBQ for our family reunion at SSR, so I paid someone to cook it, put it in Gal. size Ziplocs, froze it, and packed it in cooler bags and then my luggage. I checked 70 pounds of meat! :rotfl:

I was scared the airport security dogs would get hold of it, but it made it safe!:goodvibes

I checked about 70lbs of meat in August...(hamburger, ham) in BWI. There were 6 of us traveling and our luggage was all checked together. We get to MCO and all the bags come but the one with the meat.:scared1: We were thinking the dogs got to it because it was diverted to the flight that left after ours 45 minutes later....I was so scared that it was lost and that it would melt and our clothes would stink!!!:scared:

here's another question for you...as long as its frozen can I put the food in my carryon it's not liquid form because its frozen, right:confused3 . if all the frozen items are together they would keep each other cold and frozen so no need to ice bags which i couldn't take onto the plane with us since they are liquid with my carry on.

That may be pushing it, especially with the sauces. They will make you toss it if it's questionable. Checking is safer. Even if you have to pay for your checked bag, at least it will only be 1 way.:goodvibes

You can take solid food (like the taco meat) in your carry on. My best guess is that if it is something liquid that is frozen then they probably will make you toss it. It really depends on the screener but there will be a risk.

Just be advised that if you put a "freezer pack" in that is one of those frozen gel packs, it is considered unsafe for flight, and it could be either consfiscated orwill end up being labled as "hazardous material" and will not be allowed on some flights. We had that happen once when we tried to fly with a cooked frozen chicken. We had to take the "freezer pack" out of the package, and then they let it go, but we had to wrap it in many layers of newspaper to make sure it didn't thaw. If your flight is less than half a day, wrapping frozen food in newsprint works really well, and no other cold source needed. I would check the bag though. I doubt it would be allowed on some airlines as a carry on.

It occurs to me that it might be a good idea to pack food in bags separate from clothing. Just in case the jar of spaghetti sauce doesn't survive the baggage handlers:scared1:

I have also taken frozen precooked items in my carryon, however, I don't think I would attempt sauces (much as I would like to). As a matter of fact, we're taking lots of pizza (parbaked and frozen) with us in early January when we meet relatives from the West Coast, who don't get pizza from the "Pizza Capitol of the World" too often. I would hate to have a TSA agent decide my spaghetti sauce is going to thaw in my carryon and present a risk on the 2 1/2 hr flight from PHL to MCO and pitch the whole container!!!! I also think I would be really hesitant to put frozen sauces in a checked bag unless I was absolutely, positively sure it was packaged so as to be non-leakable. Not only are you taking the risk of ruining your own clothing, but, possibly many other people whose luggage is next to yours on that plane.

If you do bring frozen, precooked meals, don't get too carried away. I've found I don't eat as much IN as we do OUT. Some ways to freeze are to put your food in a plastic container of sometype and then prior to leaving, take out of the container and put in a plastic big. The more solid the frozen mass is, the longer it stays frozen. I make a breakfast casserole and I will precook the bulk sausage at home, freeze, throw in a plastic bag and take along. It saves alot of work on vacation. I've done this with beef stew, spaghetti, etc. I work in the medical field and my family has grown acustomed to peanut butter in a STERILE urine speciman jar (they screw on tight and are the perfect size!), a pack of spaghetti noodles tucked between someone's undies, etc. I really think the collapsable cooler works great. We also have a lifetime's supply of old luggage in our attic and will throw our food in an old suitcase and just not bring the suitcase home with us. We also discovered these zip up duffle bags at WalMart that are good too. When done, we just zip to the small size they are and throw in our luggage to come back home. My girls have a large supply of these, those trips when they come home to visit and don't have room in their suitcases. Call me cheap........but I can't stand the idea of going to the store while on vacation and buying something I'll use a very small amt of and have to throw out. Don't forget your spices!!

Gel pacs which are Frozen liquids are not allowed. Based on that assume sauces etc meet that same requirement.

Plus if your TSA agent is hungry he/she can use his "power" to take it. (And since they routinely do play "make up the rules today" don't assume they wont'!)
