I would like to adopt a elementary class. I teach 2nd grade and understand they many needs of a classroom teacher. The books and materials are usually paid for by the teacher as opposed to the school. I would like to adopt a class to provide what I can to a fellow teacher that has a need due to Hurricane Katrina.
I've gone to the LA and Miss education websites but can find no information. Does anyone know who to contact to help a fellow teacher and students?
Thanks for the help, if anyone can find out you guys can.
Thanks,
Cathy

I would guess just picking a county in one of the states and arranging it through the Superintendant. State Board of Education might be another venue--since they may be helping the counties get back on their education feet.

There's no telling which schools are still there and when they will be operational.

It is a very nice thing that you want to do :)

Here is a link for the Houston Independent School District, I know that they need lots of help.

This gives you the address for their warehouse, the phone # for their contact person, etc. There are many school districts here in Houston, but this one is the largest and not part of the suburbs. If you need more info about other school districts here in Houston let me know.

My friend (a 4th grade teacher)asked me to please ask my DIS friends for an
address she could send 4th grade supplies . Adopting a class is a GREAT idea!!!

The schools that will be most impacted will be within the districts getting the students from the large shelters. Dallas School District, Houston and San Antonio will be the most impacted. Here are the web sites for those districts:

I know that the suburban schools will also be getting students but it won't be the overwhelming amount that those schools will get.

The Texas Education Agency now has information on how to help and what they can use from teachers. Sounds like they will need teachers and other help in addition to supplies.

What a wonderful idea! If you want to help a class in one of the schools that have been damaged in Mississippi, Alabama or Louisiana you may have to wait until things settle down enough to know which schools will be back up and running when. That may take a while. If you want to help now I'd concur with those who are offering info on the schools in Texas who are taking huge numbers of students.

Whatever you choose to do I want to say thank you.

On the news tonight when they were talking about sliddel (sp?), they said that they were gonna try to get school back in session by oct 3rd there? Maybe that school district would be a place to start if you were thinking of classrooms that lost everything?

I am working on adopting a school here in NC that is taking alot of evacues from LA. I am starting with the BOE in that area & going from there. We figure that it will be easier to get materials & help to people coming to this area than trying to ship them where they are already overwhelmed with things & have storage issues. I hope to match the kids up by classroom so that they can be penpals for a while & continue to receive our support for as long as they are here.
