I want a Kindle now

Can anyone tell me the difference between the Kindles at Target and the ones on Amazon?

Is the $139 one on Amazon, the same as the $189 one at Target. Thanks

There's a $189 one at Amazon.com too. The $139 version is Wi-Fi only, and the $189 version is 3G + Wi-Fi.

Though if you're looking right now, the ones at Target are probably only the Kindle 2s, as the new version isn't out yet (but is available for pre-order).

Basically, if you have Wi-Fi access, the $139 version is good enough. Worst case, you can download your books at home if you have Wi-Fi there, then carry the Kindle with you. Though I will admit that I just ordered a new one (I have the original Kindle) and got the 3G version. I like to be prepared.

I know that there is a $189 at Amazon, but I'm thinking that the $189 one at Target just isn't "apples to apples". The kid that helped me at Target this morning didn't know a thing about Kindle (neither do I), he said that I was his first inquiry on it.

I don't mind spending the $189, but I'd prefer not to have "last year's model" if that is what happening. I suppose I could wait another month, but I'd really like one now.

Yep, elbowglitter pretty much summed it up, but I had the following all typed up so I'll post it anyway...
There are basically 3 versions as of now:
-The $189 (the Kindle2) at Target and Amazon, which has AT&T's Whispernet 3G wireless service included. (so the advantage to this is that you can get books anytime, anywhere there's a 3G signal)
-The $139 one that only comes Wi-Fi ready. So you can only shop for books when you have a Wi-Fi connection at home or at a coffee shop, etc. I would actually get this one now if I didn't already have the above-mentioned one...LOL I don't generally need a book so badly on the spot that I can't just wait until I get home to buy it.
-Then the Kindle3 has been announced, but it hasn't come out yet and you can only place pre-orders.

The $189 one at Target is the same one you'll get for $189 at Amazon.

I can tell you that the biggest difference I've read about from K2 to K3 is the size. I've read that the K3 is smaller and more compact, the buttons are placed slightly more efficiently, and it's easier to hold with one hand. The screen size itself is the same on both (6 inches), and the screen quality is the same.
As I said before, I have the K2, and I love it!!

One advantage of ordering from Amazon is that the Kindle will already be registered so you can begin ordering books right away. They will be billed to the account you ordered the Kindle from. I resisted for years but got one this year and love it.

I just ordered the K3 from Amazon. I went ahead and got the $189 in case I am at an airport or something and want to get a book. I am more of an audiobook person but lately I started reading some books on the Kindle app on my phone. It works well, but it hurts my hand after a while gripping the small phone.

I'm considering taking the plunge but can't decide if I should get a Kindle or get a Sony eReader. I just don't understand how they work or the differences. For example you all stated that the Kindle comes with AT&T wi fi. Do I need to have an AT&T account to use it? I have Verizon so I don't get how it works connecting without having to pay somehow.

I don't want to spend a fortune, but I do like to take a lot of books when I travel and I just can't carry these giant tomes anymore. So I'm looking for one.

What should I do?

OP, the ones there at Target are the last model. The newest model isn't out yet. The prices being the same are confusing matters.

I can't tell you what to do on Kindle vs. Sony, but I've had a Kindle for a year and a half and I absolutely love it. No complaints here.

Im starting to get interested in the e-readers. Would be an easy choice for me IF the Kindle allowed you to download books from the library, so I am still debating between Kindle & Nook. IF I had to buy one today the Nook would be my choice.

I have the Nook and love it. The difference is that the Nook has a sharing feature, where the others do not. You can share books with someone who also has a Nook.

I have the Sony and I love it. On the sony you can borrow ebooks from any library system that has them. I borrow a book for 2 weeks and then it just goes away. Great system that works for me.

I have a Sony (pocket) and it doesn't have Wi-Fi or 3G. I'm not sure any Sony in the price range of the Kindle or Nook does (but I could be wrong because there are so many new ereaders coming out that Sony may be forced to drop their prices as well). I got the Sony because I wanted something very compact and I don't mind the fact that I can't order a book on the fly because I just make sure I have a couple on there at all times. I can also borrow from the library which is a nice option.

I was in Borders yesterday and they carry the SOny devices but there was also another eReader there, Sears had one in their flyer for $99 (with wi-fi) but I don't know the quality of them.

when you are researching also check with your library system to see which one(s) it supports.

we got dd a nook recently b/c it's the one our library system supports-she was thrilled to see how many books she could get through this resource.
