not a big farm, just a couple of acres. In my fantasy I wouldn't even be able to see any neighbors. We are considering putting out home up for sale next year. If we do, I don't want to live in a development, subdivision, town, neighborhood. I wanna live in the country. I want to open my windows & not hear my neighbors talking, knowing that they will hear anything i say too. I want to have a Bar-b-Que without all of the neighbors yelling "save some for us". I want to swim in a big pool without the neighborhood kids thinking it's the community pool. I would love for my kids to get on & off of the bus right in front of the house, so we didn't have to worry about bus stop bullies. It would be great to have a party & invite as many people as I want without worrying about where they will park. I wouldn't have to run out 7 cut my grass on the same day my neighbor does, so ours doesn't look taller. I wouldn't have to worry about my kids being around the creepy neighbors.
Am I the only one who feels this way? Is this normal? My grandmother has a nice place in the country & I love spending time in her quiet yard. :)

Green Acers is the place for me.....

We currently live "inner-city" and can't wait to move out. DH and I were raised in the country. However did we wind up here. The neighborhood we're in presently is nice, but I don't like living in a rowhouse, let alone the fact that it is split in to two "apartments".

We share water - a real pain with two families - imagine a family of seven sharing two bathrooms. Their circuit breaker is in the basement, to which we have access and they don't. There is a particular circuit that they often trip and we must reset. .

Parking is a nuisance and no one comes to visit (not to mention we are 20+ miles from most of our family).

I'd love to ponder the thought of buying a house in the 'burbs, or anywhere outside the city limits, but the thought of what our mortgage payment will be just puts a knot in my stomach.

Your new neighbors welcome you. (I like Green Acres so much, I think I'll leave this pic if the mods don't think it's too big).:D

hey i live in the country and it is awesome. i love not having neighbors right beside us and its so peaceful. we dont have any farm animals, but once we had cows and horses but we ended up getting rid of them because they just sat around. so they went to good homes. now we just have cats, a dog and a pond full of koi. ahhh the peace~~

although I don't really live in a "city" per say....it is a suburb of Detroit....I have visited the "country" around here quite often as we camp and have friend living out.....I could never ever be a "country girl".....just not the type I guess.....DH on the other hand would in a minute....can you see the arguement???.....

Went to a "out in the boonies" party a couple weeks ago....with Babe, by the way.....anyway.....they had some pigs, turkeys and chickens dropped off for some "effects" of the "hatfield and mc cocoy" theme......I totally freaked out!!!! The smell.....the uglieness!!....eventhough, after a "few"....they have pics of me holding the pigs!!!! NICE PLACE TO VISIT

I have both(kind of). We have a 2 1/2 acre home in a small town in NJ where we don't see our neighbors, where riding horses are the norm., where the mail box is across the street and you could walk to it naked because no one sees you (lol) Veg/fruit stands all over the place, pumpkin picking, fruit/veg. picking and also a co-op in NY, where when you step outside of your building all the action and liveliness is. Where there are stores galore, where you don't need a car for anything. Give me the city anytime. How I love NYC....

Welcome to NH.

And thanks for reminding me why we live here!

WOW someone else from Delaware. Good luck trying to find a home in the country with all of the developoments going up. I know how you feel though. Maybe all us Disers can buy a big commune and live together.:hyper:

MagicalMom, boy are we ever on the same page!!! ::yes::

I do live in the country, but there are two other houses quite close to ours, plus it's a very busy "main-ish" road and the dairy farmer up the road from us expanded, and is expanding again  and there are all kinds of trucks (milk, manure, hay) going up and down the road from about 7 a.m. until late at night, sometimes midnight, nearly every single day. I get so frustrated by all the noise. And the neighbor's dog barks, and they've been doing some remodeling to their house and we hear can hear the pounding-of-the-nails until late at night, they let their kids stay outside late at night (after dark) running around and screaming at the top of their lungs. I'm beginning to hate living here!!

I dream of owning at least 40 wooded acres "up north" (at least a couple hour's drive from here) and putting a small log cabin right smack in the middle. I don't want to hear any noise, other than nature sounds like birds singing, frogs croaking, crickets chirping! :teeth:

Even tho I live in a small town here in the bottom half of the mitten, I would love, also to live Up North. It is so beautiful and serene up there........even tho I'm not sure about the winters!!!:earseek: :teeth: :D

We love living in the country - NJ still has some beautiful places. We have about 18 acres. We are on top of a hill up a long, steep, winding driveway. We've gotten used to it in the winter and know how to deal with it! We have complete privacy, which is really nice. But don't think living in the country will automatically get you a school bus stop at the end of your driveway. I drive my son 3/4 mile to the HS bus stop. I started this with DD as it is a main county road with no sidewalks, blind curves, etc. The elementary school bus would pick them up at the end of the driveway, but again, I drove them down because I could not have seen them from the house and they would be there alone on the main road. Then I just started driving them to school since it was only 1 mile away and I spent more time waiting for the bus than if I just took them!

There are no stores really close - the closest mall is 20 miles. I put about 20,000 miles a year on the van just getting around here.

We have four horses in our barn, 2 of ours and 2 boarders. This has been DD's project. She's now in college, but when she was growing up, she did the feeding and barn work twice a day and whatever other chores were needed. DS helps with the maintenance. He and DH are in the process of putting in new fencing. They also take care of the large garden.

It's a great way to raise kids. Our town is now developing quickly and the atmosphere at our small school is changing. When my kids went there, enrollment K-8 was about 200. Now, 12 years since we've been here, it's close to 400. Lots of changes, not all for the better.

The only thing I think they might have missed is being in a neighborhood where you can run next door and say "Can Johnny come out to play?", and getting a game together with whoever is around at th time. I always had to drive them to their friends house, which works too.

But we can't imagine living in the suburbs again!

That's the truth huh? The developments are tempting, b/c the houses are lovely but they are right next to each other. I'll find the right place someday. :)

We live in "sort of" country. For this tourist area we have a nice spread, Not big though and I can still see my neighbors! We also live on a "main-ish" road and the traffic does bother me. Even though we are in "the Boondocks" (according to all our relatives) people tend to drive WAY too fast on our road. Tractor trailers, police officers, you name it ... they fly!

DH and I were just talking about this tonight. But where to move ...that is the question.

Any Suggestions?

We just closed on our old house in MA last week. We lived there for 7 years. At first, I HATED living so close to the neighbors, and I wanted some land...I didn't like the chaos, the screaming kids, everyone being in everyone else's business, etc. Anyways, 7 years later it broke my heart to leave them all. Those neighbors are like family to us now. The things that you described are the things that I miss, LOL!

We just moved into our new house in FL yesterday. This town is so nice, but already my DH and I are dismayed about the quiet here. I don't understand why there aren't more people out-and-about. We're actually mulling over putting in another contract to build in a more active neighborhood:eek:

I too have had it with suburban living. Oour neighborhood has 1/3 acre lots and all the homes are similar in style and color. I am tired of the neighbors too. On one side of us is a single woman who never ever talks to us. On the other side is an older couple who I never met and we have lived here 11 years. As for our kids having other kids to play wit, well that is true, but those kids aren't necessarily the one you want them to play with. We have the sneaky kid, the obnoxious kid, the rough kid, the clumsy kid, etc. Each one has an issue of some sort that must be dealt with. One kid is being raised in the Jewish faith, so there goes Santa Claus for our kids. Another has a mother that is a fanatic about what the kid eats. I can not find one family that I could say is normal.

Anyway, I want a couple of acres on a country lane with stone walls and trees. I want to look out my window and see trees, not my neighbors house 50 feet away. I want to be able to paint my house the color I want and not worry that it would look out of place. I do not want to be talked about by the soccer moms in our neighborhood who have nothing better to do than gossip about each other. I want my kids to be picked up by the bus at our driveway and not at the corner where the comadant mom lives and tries to control everyone. I want a house with some character and not a ticky tack box like 30 others in this neighborhood.

So to answer your question mom, yes you are normal and no you are not alone.
