DS (16) wants an Ipod for Xmas.... He's asked for an I-touch or a Nano. I think he'd really like the touch the best but we both have concerns about him taking this to school (possibility of theft or breakage) and I'm concerned about the possible distractions (games, video) rather than just music...

However, the touch would be nice for weekends when he is away from home.

I've also considered getting the touch for home/weekend use and a different player for school (study hall, ect).

Please tell me your thoughts on what to do. I need to order one soon :goodvibes

I'm thiniking the threat of theft/breakage is the same with any model:confused3

I am on my touch right now! It is a great little pocket computer (as long as there is wifi around.). I can check out the Dis, the news, and go on AOL instant messenger for chats with my mom and DDs. My DD13 has one and my DH is getting one for Xmas. The nano is cute but the touch is really not that much more money (if you stick with the lowest amount of memory one) and does SO much more. Either way it is an expensive toy so I don't allow DD to take it to school. We have bought all our iPods thru the apple website. Free shipping and engraving.

I was in the same predicament (sp?) and decided to go for the touch, the 8G is about the same price as the nano. They get distractions with their phone, tv, computer anyway and the theft riks in the lockers is the same with any model.

I was just out reading up on the Touch myself this evening. On quite a few sites, members stated in reviews that the 8 GB is not really a 3rd generation iPod but rather a 2nd generation one that's simply repackaged.

Well is for my kids, they don't need a big fancy thing, all they want to do is to play music, videos, put pics, things like that. I can't afford the 32G since I need 2. They want the touch thing that's pretty much the whole big deal. Thanks for the advice ;)

That's all well and good if you didn't pay more for it than you'd have paid had you bought the 2nd generation. Actually, it's all well and good if you're happy with it, I'm just sayin'.

Know what you mean about buying 2 though, I too have 2 that want it.

Thank you. Im not very expert on the ipod world :( I wish I had one myself :( but you know how it is. We bought our older Son the 30G a couple of years ago and we paid about $250.00 plus tax, but is 30G, the touch one is $172.00 plus tax, the nano is $5.00 more. I don't know anymore :( thanks for your help.

My concern on the touch is the larger sceen size.... Does anyone think this would be a higher risk for breaking in a back pack due the size than the Nano :confused3

The risk is probably only slightly higher, I vote for the Touch.

Get a case and do NOT carry it with everything else in a backpack, would be my advice. For my money, the best case available is a Speck CandyShell--it has silicone on the inside of the case and rigid plastic on the outside. I've used 3 different ones on my iPhone (different colors was the only reason I changed) and my phone looks MINT. There isn't a single scratch on it.

I'd also recommend a screen protector. The screen is glass so it won't scratch as easily as plastic, but it's still possible and would be extremely annoying, I'd imagine.

Still trying to make a decision. I need to order soon so any advise would be appreciated :goodvibes

He will like the Touch more. There is no question about that. I'd suggest checking out the pricing for the 2nd generation Touch if you're only going to get the one that's 8GB. Otherwise, you could be paying generation 3 pricing for a 2nd generation model (at Amazon, they run about the same price, but that isn't true across the board). There are differences between the 2 generations, and any Google search will point them out.

There are 2 stores that I'm aware of that are offering gift cards if you purchase it at their store. Best Buy is offering a $30 card for any Touch and Target is offering a $25 card on the 32GB and $35 on the 64GB. They also have $10 on the Nano. Other stores might be offering incentives too. You can look at circulars online if you'd be interested.

I find myself wavering on whether or not to make the purchase myself, so I really am not much help. I can't understand why these kids don't use their cell phones as their MP3 players too, but for some reason, my kids do not do that.

Ds11 is getting a refurbished itouch - it's all he really wants for Christmas! He does have an old nano already (dd13 sold it to him last year).

Personally, I wouldn't want my kids to have endless unsupervised internet access, so we wouldnt' buy the itouch, although I know they'd like to have them.

I'm a grown woman and will be getting a 32g itouch for my birthday/Hanukkah/Christmas gift from my family. I am from a mixed family and we celebrate everything, lol.

I have no idea really what I will do with it besides listen to music, but according to everyone I will find lots of fun things to do with it once I get it. I am very technologically challenged but supposedly I will be able to operate that little gadget.

I LOVE my iTouch!! Its an awesome mini computer when I'm away to place that have a WiFi hotspot and I need to check an email or catch up on things going on around the DIS. The apps are cool too. He would LOVE the touch cause it has the capability of doing do much more than a regular Nano would. I have a Nano too that I use for when I'm at the gym but use the Touch any other day. It also makes my grocery shopping so much easier. Now if only they had an app for the DIS boards *hint* *hint* *hint*
