the day the space shuttle miss hap. a cable station Played the movie Apollo 13. I know tv scheduling is done like a month a head of time. I think that they could have pulled it and had some type of new coverage or anthor movie. They played the movie twice,

im sure no one was watching it that day most of us probably watching the news.

We have Dishnetwork and I noticed that too. I was flipping through the channels on Sunday and saw it listed. I was surprised they wouldn't have pulled that given the situation.

No, what was really in bad taste was the commercial (I think GE) that CNN ran.........watching the continuous coverage...go to commercial break...GE talks about their role in the space program and getting them "back safely"...back to shuttle coverage.....

I'm confused about why you would think that showing Apollo 13 is in bad taste. It shows one of the space programs finest moments. Those three astronauts only made it back home safe and sound due to their tenacity and the hard work of the people of NASA. Their safe return was one of the greatest achievements of the space program. In light of the Columbia accident, I think that showcasing the successful return of the Apollo 13 astronauts might just be the ticket.

Now the GE commercial is another matter. :(

I think CNN may have realized what they did...I watched it off and on all day and only saw the commercial once.

FX was scheduled to show Armageddon on Saturday night (and on Sunday as well), and they replaced it with Alien.

The Israeli astronaut watched Appollo 13 with his family before he left. They showed his little daughter saying she thought her dad's shuttle was going to blow up. He was holding her and said "No it's not going to blow up." I couldn't believe that exchange actually happened it was so sad.

I was just going to say what TLinden16 said. I noticed that as well.

Actually, I came home and watched Apollo 13 on VHS the night Columbia failed to make it home. I watched it for the exact reasons that Towncrier mentions in his post. It helped me come to grips with how I felt about the incident :(

What I thought was in bad taste was when I was watching the coverage and there were commercials for "Armageddon" and the beginning of the promo shows the space shuttle bursting into flames and exploding.
That view bothered me a bit as I was watching it over and over during the newscast and then again in the commercials.

It's not in bad taste...its not like any of this was done on purpose. Armegedon has been playing on FX for a few weeks now and it was already scheduled to be on Saturday and I'm sure Apollo 13 was scheduled for a while too. I know Armegedon didn't come on, but Apollo 13 may not have been on either. I noticed that on Dish Network it still listed what was suppose to be on even though that's not what they were showing. I saw Armegedon on FX but that's not the movie that was playing (I forget which one it was, it may have been Alien) so it could've been the same with Apollo.

Either way, I don't think it's bad taste. It just reminds us how wonderful our space program is and no matter how many obsticles are thrown its way it will never end our space exploration. America always continues to stand strong. I think that should be the point to those movies.

I have heard the song "Major Tom" played on various radio stations about 20 times since the tragedy.

I hadn't heard about Apollo 13, but I heard on our local radio station that Armageddon had been pulled and that GE tried to get all their commercials pulled, as well. One commercial got by them. I do not believe they were insensitive at all, just the opposite.
