WHen I was watching Travel Channel the other night..I was watching those who had bought into DVC...so I opened that 'thoughts on the secret' thread...but after reading 2 deep posts...I realized I mis-thought... LOL

What are your thoughts on DVC? Is it much more expensive than regular timeshares?? I want it :) lol

My feelings are - and these are only my feelings -

If you're a Disney fanatic and go every year, or twice or more a year - its a great value. You're buying tomorrow's vacation at today's dollars.

If you don't plan on going to Disney at least every other year - it may not be the same value as other timeshares.

I researched no other time shares - just Disney's.

And since I purchased it - we've gone at least once a year.

We love it - but it is an extravagance. You could probably stay at a value or moderate resort and go once a year for less than what the DVC costs.

But - since I don't have kids - I've always gone to Disney at the deluxe resorts - so the DVC is actually saving us (my extended family) a lot of money.

Plus the mortgage is a write off on my taxes.

Oh..I definitely think I'd go enough...but if you think I could stay at value or mod for less than DVC...maybe I oughtta not!! Only thing is..my family is getting bigger...LOL

We bought in 2004, at the time had 2 kids - now we have 3. It is soooo worth it for us.

1 - full kitchen. If we fly, we have food delivered. This allows for breakfasts in the room, snacks, sandwiches, etc.

2 - washer/dryer - I can pack 1/2 as much and wash throughout the week (and not go home with a suitcase full of dirty clothes is nice)

3 - 3 kids - 2 bedroom = 2 bathrooms - 'nuf said :)

We go once a year but in Feb. just Dh & myself went for a long weekend in a studio. Stayed at BWV, it was wonderful. We probably wouldn't have gone had we not had DVC.

DVC is generally more expensive than other time-shares offering roughly the same amenities.

However, DVC has much more Disney than non-Disney time shares (yes, this is an obvious observation) .

We have DVC and two other timeshares. We like them all, but REALLY look forward to our DVC stays over and above the others.

I would research Timeshares in general on this board and others and make sure that it is something you really want to do. It is not for everyone and honestly, it is not an investment in the pure sense of the word. It is simply one of many ways to spend your discretionary income......on vacations.

For us, we like Timeshares because they make us take vacation as opposed to just taking time off from work.

JMO and Good Luck.

Mr. Man -- this is the same exact line that the guy who sold us our timeshare used on us. Would you happen to be an extremely tall and handsome gentleman of Cuban descent?

 I'm not Mr. Man, but I just had to comment. DH and I used to own a Starwood timeshare, and at one of the owner's meetings our agent fit that description perfectly.

The statement that owning a timeshare encourages you to actually take a vacation has been true for us, btw. We now own DVC (sold the Starwood) and go to WDW twice a year. Prior to our timeshare ownership, it was like pulling teeth to get DH to actually GO anywhere.

DVC is a good fit for us because we love Disney, and we enjoy going to WDW. Where some folks like to go to the beach every year, we love heading down to WDW. :)

Why yes I am.....except for the extremely tall, handsome gentleman of Cuban descent part.......;)

People do say I have extremely fetching earlobes though.......:thumbsup2

I can only talk about it in dollars .......

When we stayed for a week at the Contemporary Concierge - it cost us around $5,000.

When I purchased the Disney points - it was around $25,000.

So that represents 5 years of paying out of pocket to go the Contemporary - assuming prices didn't go up.....

For the 25,000 - I can go once every year for over 50 years........

If I didn't have DVC and stayed with the Contemporary\Boardwalk\Beach Club - it could cost at least $250,000. Yikes - not I probably would do that or go every year when I'm in my 80's or 90's.........

I love, love, love my DVC!! I love the one bedroom villas because they are perfect for my family (self, DH, 2 young boys). I love the washer/dryer, big whirlpool tub, separate master bed, full kitchen, themes, and on and on and on!

Well worth the money IMHO!

If your happy in values and mods......DVC will probably not pay for you.
If you plan mostly last minute trips....DVC will probably not work for you....

However if you love deluxe and plan on going to WDW at least once every 2 years, and can plan 7-11 months in advance.....DVC might be for you:goodvibes

Careful though.....I was "happy" in a regular deluxe room.....Now I
"need" a 1BR:snooty: :lmao:

We paid about 11,500 for our DVC at Saratoga Springs 4 1/2 years ago which will get us a studio every year or a 2 bedroom every other year. Even if we stayed the value resorts I am sure 11,500 wouldn't cover the costs of a week at a WDW resort every year or two for the next 46 years.

I think it'd work wonderfully for me overall.... but here's my question/comment. I think most DISers are richer than me...lol... do they allow financing just like timeshares do? :teacher:

They offer a 10 year financing plan, at least they did when we bought. With interest and annual dues it was about $180/ month. We financed it for a year and then paid the balancewhen we sold our last house.

awesome!! God Willing my new baby will be healthy come our trip in May...I may just have to buy into this 'secret' DVC thing :)

We have 325 points. We used to use it every year, sometimes twice a year but now we don't go as often because the boys are older. When we retire we look forward to going more but for now we are content to rent our points out until we use it. We get about 3250.00 a year and use it to go somewhere here in California or just put it in our savings acount.

We love it, we just bought 160 points in Sept. 2007, we added on 100 more points after just one visit in August of this year. We will probably go once a year for a week or two depending on the time of year for the next 10 years, it also does allow us to visit other places, and do the Disney cruise too.

you can use DVC for all Disney tho...correct? I thought I saw on the show on TC you can use it at DL..WDW and Adventures by DIsney...
are there rollover points?? lol

You can roll over your points by "banking" them ;)

You could essentially use 3 years of points at one time. Banking the previous years point, using the existing and borrowing from the future.
