I'll be the voice of dissent: I think it's tacky.
We already put way too much emphasis on the material side of Christmas, and registering would just add to the problem. It sends the message that it's not the thought, it's the gift. You know what people always say about wedding registries: "Everything they asked for is in the 100+ range! I can't afford any of this!" Registering for Christmas presents would add MORE stress to gift buying, not less.
I think the real answer is to stop giving presents to everyone under the sun! We should give to JUST our families and those close to us. We don't need to give to everyone at work -- even the people we see only in passing -- and the postman and the hairdresser and to the kids' teachers and, and, and, and . . . THAT'S what's has made the holiday season stressful.
Back to the problem at hand, if you're unsure what to get for someone, there are always gifts of food, movie tickets, or gift certificates. I don't know anyone who wouldn't enjoy one of these!
