I think I went a little overboard for Easter.

Last year we hid eggs with clues in them where to find the next egg. The last clue brought the kiddo to a new game. She had a great time doing it so we are doing again this year. I'd rather spend $20 on a game than $20 on candy since both sets of grandparents will provide enough candy.
Some years easter is bigger than others, if she has outgrown her bike we'll get a new one for easter. When she was 3 the easter bunny left a swingset. She was getting one anyway so we let the easter bunny take the credit. Now she's 9 and I don't want her thinking it's a major gift giving holiday, so $20 is my max.

Okay I don't feel so bad - I went overboard on Easter too.

It would have been so much cheaper if I just let the kids have a lot of candy!

We celebrate Easter as both a religious holiday and a secular one too. Sort of the way we do Christmas. Religious and Santa!

you know I feel ya!!!I go overboard on everything...but I always start with the mind set of "don't go overboard".

My DS will be two mid April, but we are doing his bday party day before Easter so. I had to buy bday presents and easter basket...His easter basket cost me like $60 and unfortunately his father likes to give him candy, so he likes sweet so I bought a few reeces peanut butter cup and m&Ms. but I bought him Princess & Frog DVD from Dinsey Movie club so of course I had to pay full price (2 more dvds to go to end my membership!)...then the rest is like, 2 books, 1 coloring book, and small backback, crayons, frisbee, couple motorcycles and couple Lightning McQueen cars...I don't know what else..but I was like wow that's an expensive easter basket...I'm also going to leave a trail of carrots to the easter basket...and we'll be doing a easter egg hunt at my moms house that day...

Bcuz of the amount I spent on the basket, I had said I'm just going to buy a couple bday gifts..and I did I bought him Buzz lightyear walkie talkies (so he can leave my cell phones alone), bucket of army men, and a punching bag....then I went to target the other day and oh no, the Tikes Basketball Hoop was on sale for $35...

i have a problem...yes I know...

I did go over, but that's because I'm giving them a trip to Sanibel Island for Easter. They will do their egg hunt and several eggs have tiny sea shells and letters (with the usually jelly beans and chocolates) in them that spell out Sanibel Island. Once they solve the jumble, they can open the big basket that has flip flops, water shoes, bathing suits, sand sifters, a sea shell name book, goggles and that sort of stuff.

How much do you want a bet that they'll be upset the basket has no darn candy in it! Maybe I better shop some more.

I may get flamed for this, but I have a question for those of you that give huge amounts of gifts. Is Easter a religious holiday for you at all, or is it just secular? Just curious....

For me, it's secular. I grew up in a very strange religion that went to church every Saturday, didn't celebrate XMas, Easter, Halloween, etc., nor b-days. So, I see the world and its holidays very differently than most people. For me, Easter and XMas are about spending time with my family and making my kids happy. To each their own, though. But, I have my reasons--many of them!

We didnt tell her or her DH we were doing it LOL . Mr E. Bunny is making a big poster board to put on it that says
" Dear Brynlee , I have to carry alot of eggs on Easter so I thought I would bring this over a little early. Have fun and Hoppy Easter. Love E. Bunny "

We just do a small basket with a little candy and maybe some bubbles, sidewalk chalk, coloring books, etc. The kids are delighted with it. And we have never said there is an Easter bunny, but somehow through other kids and tv they have decided there is (I am not going to say that there isn't one to them, but I am not going to hype it up). Just curious....

Religious, but we definitely do gifts too. We're very active at church, as a matter of fact, our older dd is an acolyte for the Easter Sunday service. We enjoy all aspects of the holiday.

The religious aspect of Easter is very important to us and the same while I was growing up.

The bunny when I was young always brought LOTS of goodies, but the main focus of the day was celebrating Christ's resurrection .

I remember very fondly those Easter mornings in church growing up, the fellowship and the joyous singing are what has remained in my mind all these years.
Yes I do remember getting toys etc from bunny, but what stands out is the worship service and spending time with family and friends. Believing there was a bunny in no way distracted from my faith and doesn't seem to distract from my kid's faith.

Guess my church doesn't think Bunny is such a bad thing either, we have our annual Spring bash the day before Easter, with an Egg hunt and pictures with the Easter bunny.

I haven't bought a thing yet. Am I really behind??

Of course, it's NOT helping that my DS will be turning 10 on Easter Sunday this year! So I'm trying to knock out the birthday shopping, and just can't focus on baskets at all yet.

Last year our kids both got Just Born spice jelly beans, a small chocolate bunny, some Peeps, and a summer shirt. Then DS got football cards and DD got hair clips. I think they each got a little art/craft kit, too.

We have gone with bigger presents occasionally - we once did season passes to the local amusement park, and sometimes DVD's or books.

We will focus on religious aspects of the holiday on Palm Sunday, and at the Holy Thursday and Good Friday services. Then we will have my son's birthday party with friends on Saturday, a day early. Early (and I do mean EARLY) Easter morning will be basket and indoor egg time. Then we go to Easter breakfast and service at church for a joyful celebration of the risen Christ, and take family pictures in the Serenity garden afterwards. Then it's back to the secular fun with a big feast, outdoor egg hunt, and last year, a duck pinata for no apparent reason. The kids will run around the yard (or house in case of rain) in their spring finery and have a blast with their cousins. Just like our Christmas traditions meld the secular and the religious, we figure there's a time and place for everything.

We are a Christain family and the Easter Bunny has always come but the kids never really believed he was real. Never really was a big deal. DGS is 3 and while we have not told him anything one way of the other, I expect that he knows the truth. He mentioned the bunny's costune yesterday. We spend the day at church and with family.

I went to "find the Bunny" today.

DS is getting a wii game, a t-shirt, a card game and a little candy
DGS is getting a movie, a card game, bubble and a little candy and a t-shirt is I find what I want.

We did the clue hunt approach a few years back as well. We haven't the past few years, but I think we'll do it again this year since DD12 seems to find eggs much quicker than DS9 and then there's always hurt feelings. With the clues, they work together and are happy. I think growing up the Easter Bunny hid my eggs in a separate room than my little brothers. (And my youngest brother had horrible allergies so his eggs were segregated as well...he always got little party mints and oyster crackers. Only things he could eat. Poor kid! LOL) I remember a year the easter bunny did the clues for them and the final clue led them to a nintendo or intellivision game taped under the dining room table. (Dating myself, eh?)

I have nothing to add other than to say I am a bit stunned by this thread. I have never heard of presents for Easter before. My kids do get an Easter basket with some candy, and we color eggs, but that's it. No one gets any presents.

I don't know how doable this would be for you, but what I do so that my DS doesn't end up with ALL the eggs, I put one of their initials on each of them so if they find one that doesn't match their initial, it goes right back where they found it (and they are not allowed to tell). We have also done colors - one kid finds blue and pink, the other finds green and orange.
