My Township police department has 2 fundraiser a year, one in the summer and one during Christmas. A telemarketer asking me could they count on my "continued support". I told her that in light of the recession, I was cutting back on my charitable giving and that I supported the police during their July campaign.

The lady said to me "Well I hope the police don't feel that way when you call them for help" and then hung up.
Wow, talk about having your tinsel in a tangle. It must be rough in the telemarketing business.

Certainly doesn't sound like you got cursed out. Butb they were out of line noentheless. Maybe you should reconsider your July donation?

The 'tinsel in a tangle" part made me LOL...I am SO going to steal that line for the holidays!
Sorry you were snapped at...sheesh! We can't ALWAYS give as much as we would LIKE to!

Sounds like the place that used to call us and we sent money for a while and it got to the point they were calling every other month so we stopped. I finally told them not to call again and they got all snotty with us.

We used to get those calls 'on behalf' of the fire department and the police. Turns out it was a solicitation company and they kept part of the donation as their fee. We just started making sure to give our donation to actual police officers and firemen during the campaigns when they're out in public. The telemarketers were not impressed when they called and we said we'd donated locally, but I think I can live with the guilt.

It's that "magical time of year".. "The fountains of kindness are overflowing".. "Good will to all" - "spreading cheer" - and all that jazz.. Guess she was among those who didn't get the "memo".. :santa:

Too bad you couldn't report her to.............................the police!! :rotfl:

Kohl's right now is selling ladies holiday tops with that expression on them & a cute little embroidered design. I picked one up on Black Friday. It says on the front, "Don't get your tinsel in a tangle" :rotfl:

Are you sure it was your township that was fundraising? I have a friend whos DH is a cop, and he said that those "Fire and Police fundraising" companies are a farce. They keep 90% of the money for their "non-profit" and donate 10% to police and fire organizations - not necessarily even locally.

I also have been cussed out by one. I told them that my DH was recently laid off, I was not working and in nursing school full time, so it wasn't feasible this year. The guy answered, "Geez, I hope that you get a prompt response if you need them, especially considering your non-support.":sad2: Must be their standard arm-twist.

I responded, "I DO support my LOCAL police and fire departments. I pay my taxes, and vote yes to the millages they need. Much more than your organization does for our LOCAL departments." They guy then hung up on me.:rolleyes1

I'm sorry they were rude to you. It's funny when the police around here do there calling it usually for shop with a cop. They are usually very nice and respectful

This is the type of organization that called us and partly why we stopped-because of the amount they hold back. I wouldn't have an issue if the cops got the 90% and they kept 10% (and they were not rude).

Terribly rude and out-of-line of the telemarketer, but once again, NOT a "cussing out".

I would double check, most of these are scams for not your local police, but some obscure agency of an association someplace.

Our Chiefs of police association, nor our departments had fundraisers, especially phone ones. They make ,80 of every dollar, not cost effective, Besides, unless it is for perhaps a piece of equipment, like we had portable breathalyzers donated by funds from local non profits and insurance companies, there was no such thing as needs to be met. That is why there is a budget for the departments.

Call your local PD they said they represent and see for sure, also to complain of the person making such a STUPID remark! :sad2:

Oh my goodness. That wasn't very nice.

Make sure to tell them to take you off their calling list permanently the next time they call. Don't let them intimidate you and don't waste your time arguing with them. Just repeat the "Remove me from the calling list." statement and hang up after saying goodbye.

Think about it: what police or firefighter is going to check the contribution list before answering a 911 call? You'd make millions on the lawsuit aftermath if that were even remotely possible or true, lol.

I agree with the PP - if you want to donate to a group, do it directly. More of your contribution reaches your intended charity.

I know a lot of people who buy this or that because "well, it's for charity." After the seller takes a cut, you still cannot deduct the contribution on YOUR taxes. All these "Buy a shoe/shamrock/heart" campaigns are well-intentioned, but you're just funding that restaurant's contributions to the charity. The chain gets to take the full deduction, including your donation and any matching monies they contribute.

You know - the more I think about this, I think you could be right..

Something just seems "off" that a person calling for contributions to the police dept. would make such a rude, intimidating comment..:confused3

We get those calls too, but I don't answer when I see the name on the caller ID. The last time I answered one of their calls, I told the guy calling that their organization was disreputable. The guy ended up hanging up on ME!

This is why I never answer the phone unless I know who is on the other end. I can't stand dealing with telemarketers. I have speaker caller ID and if it comes up "unavailable" or "private caller" I let it go to voice mail. It's almost always telemarketers, who generally just hang up, or robo calls for upcoming elections when it is that time of year.

Now you know why I keep a compressed air horn next to the phone.
