I guess this is your DD's cat & you-all are keeping it? If I were in your shoes, I think I would never again trust that cat. I would not allow children to play with it or get up next to it, especially their faces.
He's the family cat. DD20 still lives at home and has had him since she was 4.
Until now, he was the perfect cat for small children. He has one blue eye/one green eye and, as many cats with that combination are, is deaf. Not being able to hear kids screaming, sudden crashes, and loud noises that would startle an ordinary cat has made him exceptionally gentle and tolerant all these years. Things didn't scare him b/c he didn't hear them so he was always very kind and gentle. DD20 has a huge album of him dressed in doll clothes, santa outfits, costumes, and in various containers over the years looking just as happy to be there as she was to take the picture.
We'd never have expected this of him and just don't have any explanation, other than to think that I must have stepped on him without realizing it. The younger DD9 and I are still giving him his space however just in case...
