I survived another dance recital weekend

Wow!! I feel much better about our 2-hour recitals, you guys have it much worse!::yes:: DD is in several classes, so she has numbers sprinkled all through the show, there's no leaving early for us! I don't really mind if people leave early, but as others stated, I like for them to wait until between numbers. Our dance instructor sends out a newsletter asking everyone to wait until the break, when the lights come up, but most don't pay any attention.

Our recital is held 35 miles away at the college, and they have a dress rehearsal, usually that morning, and then the recital in the evening. Kind of a pain to drive up there twice! The fee is a flat $40 for the family, and then they charge an extra fee (I think $6) for others (grandparents, friends, etc.)

Oh, and over the last 2 yrs. they have started having the acrobats recital separate, at the local HS. Not sure what prompted that, but the dance recital is shorter. But, we have to go to two now, so it's kind of a draw!

Well I think I have you all beat......................

3 dress reheasals
8 shows
6 numbers
3 hours 20 minutes for each show

Daughter is 13 and this is her tenth year of dance. She has been in a performing line for the last 8 years.
Wouldn't change it for the world!

I can see your point on a weeknight -- but I was talking about a 1-hour performance on saturday afternoon.

You are right about that!

If our studio had a 1-hr show on a Sat afternoon, not only would I stay for the whole thing, I might even be able to bring DD2 to see her sister dance!

I guess the point of all this is pay attention, ask in advance what the etiquette is, and be polite. If your child is done dancing and you notice that a lot of people don't have seats, please give up your seat...it's not polite to stay to the end if you are depriving another parent of being able to sit in the hall and see their child dance.

Our recital is not until July 3rd. There are two performances. The shows last between 2.5 and 3 hours. All kids are in both except for the baby classes. My DD 7 is in company and is in 5 numbers. DD 10 is in 1 number. The studio and all the dancers work real hard and deserve the attention of the audience.

At our studio, everybody checks in before the show starts and are not released until the end. This is mainly done for security purposes. The only people allowed backstage are the stage mothers who have volunteered to work the show. One exception to this is for the baby class. Parents of the younger ones are given a ticket so that they can pick up their child after their performance is over.

Our show is at Stonybrook University out on the island. The theater is beautiful and fully air conditioned. Each ticket is for an assigned seat so everybody knows in advance where they will be sitting and no one needs to stand.

We enjoy watching other children perfom as well as our own. Their faces show such joy, happiness and pride! Though, I must admit that I can't imagine a show lasting more than 4 hours. We attended many competitions this year, and the ones that were long did lose people's attention.

Unfortunately this will be our last year at our studio as we are moving out of state to Las Vegas. Does anybody know of a great studio in that area? We are definately going to miss Nancy's Dance Factory and will bring with us many fond memories.
