That's a scary blast from the past!

I had forgotten the circumstances of his "disappearance."

Yes- he was on WABC- channel 7 in NY, but only for a couple of years.
We got to know him on WNBC (Channel 4) for most of his career. He wore a smock and drew pictures of the weather patterns. He had a "sidekick" called Uncle Weatherbee. (I got this from Wiki, and it all came flooding back!)
Wiki also discusses that on air remark that ended his career.

Wow, I remember him too-I was a kid in NJ back in those days. His replacement Storm Field was the son of another local weather guy, Dr Frank Field. I remember thinking that Frank was a pretty mean guy to name his kid Storm...did he want him to get beat up on the playground or something?

I remember him. I remember the the pencil thin mustache. I THINK I remember that horrible remark too. If I recall correctly, he claimed he was "merely" quoting a Chinese proverb.

OMG - talk about the wayback machine.

He was on ABC with Roger Grimsby and Bill Beutel.

I think his explanation was that he wasn't really paying attention to the particulars of the story but....
