For the past few years, we have been doing mainly ice cream cakes for the kids birthday parties. My baby girl's 1st birthday party is tomorrow and I went yesterday to get a Carvel ice cream cake and for a 9x13 one it was almost $30! I don't know if the prices went up or if I was oblivious in the past but I refused to get one and pay that price. Instead, I made my own for under $10!!!! I'm so proud of myself. :cool1:

Very cool, congrats! Got pic of it?

dang, now I want some ice cream, lol.

My Mom always made me ice cream cakes growing up. For my 30th birthday awhile ago she asked if she could just get me one from Coldstone. $30 cakes must be worth it when you get older :lmao: Coldstone's are my favorite because of the frosting/cake/ice cream ratio, but what's not to love about any ice cream cake?? :lovestruc (I even got proposed to with a Coldstone ice cream cake :))

Good job! :thumbsup2

I haven't bought one in awhile, but when I did I got them at BJ's where they were a little cheaper.

=) thanks everyone! How do I go about posting a picture here??? I will post a pic after I get the "frosting" on it--which is just cool whip. ;)

3. Upload your picture to photobucket.
4. Click on the picture in your account and you will see a list on the side that looks like this:

5. Right click on IMG code on the bottom, copy.
6. Post on the DIS, right click, and paste into your post.

It's easy. I just uploaded, copied, and pasted the graphic above in about 10 seconds.

thanks! I will upload it in a couple of hours after I get it all frosted. =) I'm doing the "Happy 1st Birthday Bella!" in a gel type material--I'm wondering if I should do that tomorrow or do it when I frost it. Any thoughts?

I'd do the gel last minute, that stuff can bleed.

The $$$ is for the patented Carvel crunchies in the middle - and they're worth it!

You may be a very talented cake maker but can you equal Cookie Puss?

Here is the essential "Carvel" Crunchies recipe for our budget minded Ice Cream Cakes....:) Sorry it's in Grams, but I think 50 grams is similar to 1/4cup.

Chocolate Streusel

50 grams unsalted butter
50 grams sugar
50 grams almond flour (finely ground almonds..just put in spice grinder)
40 grams flour
10 grams cocoa powder
pinch of salt

Cream all ingredients together until a ball forms. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze until it hardens. When it is solid, grate it with a large grater or even through a food grinder. You will get little pieces of streusel. Refrigerate right away.

When the pieces of streusel are hard again, spread them on a sheetpan and bake in a 350 degree oven for about 12 minutes. Let the streusel cool and store in an airtight container until ready to use.

Due to food allergies (gluten) I have been making ice cream cakes for quite a few years. I make them in a spring form pan, with a layer of hot fudge and crunched up butterfingers between the layers. I also frost mine with cool whip. They always come out great and are a big hit! The best part is that you can have any flavors you want in them!

That sounds yummy! I have a spring form pan I've only used once, I may have to break it out again!

That's awesome that you made your own, but I think $30 is the norm for a ice cream cake. They cost quite a bit more than a traditional cake.

I used to spend hours making my kids cakes when they were younger, but now that I am older, I agree that $30 to buy an ice cream cake is worth it to me now! Just send the hubby up to get it and we are done!

Arnie's in Concord, NH makes outstanding ice cream cakes!

WOW! Cook cake! Mine doesn't look anything close to that. I'm definitely not that great at making cakes. This was my first go at an ice cream cake--it came out okay. I'm happy with it and I know my fam will be too. That's all that matters. I made the Carvel crunchies for the middle--yummmmm!!

Around here, you can get a normal bake cake for $14 to $20 but we prefer icecream cake. I know it's normal for $30 to be the cost of an ice cream cake, but I decided to go budget friendly. I've never had the Arnie's ice cream cakes but I find that place to be VERY overpriced in general--I've maybe been there once or twice.

Good for you! :thumbsup2 I did the same thing a few years ago when my (then) 6 year old wanted an ice cream cake for 26 friends. They were asking $52.00 :scared1:
So I made a large ice cream cake using ice cream sandwiches as the outside and 2 layers of ice cream with hot fudge sauce in the middle. YUM! And less than $15.00
I am going to try the copy cat recipe for carvel crunchies cuz that would be awesome!

I didn't make that or anything, that's an official Cookie Puss. ;)
