my DL is about to expire. I went online to find out the deal, and :scared1: discovered that NCDMV now mails out liscences in about 20 days.

Here's my question: My birthday will occur while we are at WDW, so when I go to fly back, my DL will be expired by a day. Will they let me use it at security, or should I pack my passport as well?

I hate to travel with the pp if I don't have to...always a loss risk. But it would be worse to have security issues, I suppose. Has anyone had this happen?

My brother-in-law had a similar problem. He didn't realize that his license had expired and he was indeed stopped at security. He did have to go through the secondary security screening but was ultimately allowed to board the plane.

The bigger problem was when he got home to try and renew his license. Because it had expired...he had to retake the test. It was as if he never had a license before.

Can't you go renew in person at the DMV? Our DMV issues the new license on the spot... well... after they make you wait for a bit. But you leave with the new license.

Renew it in person...they will give you a sheet, with photo on it, to use in the meantime. But, bring your passport with you. I would certainly renew before leaving.

NCDMV no longer gives same-day licenses. This is a new policy to prevent identity theft. They will give me a piece of paper saying that the renewal is being processed, but it will not have a photo and will not count as id.

I'd just use the passport. It's even more acceptable than a DL for identification.

I would start the DL renewal process, and bring your passport for ID for the whole trip.

Oh wait, will you be driving? If driving, ignore that. :) If not, just start the process and just use the passport for ID.

thanks, ya'll. Sounds like everyone agrees with the conclusion I've reluctanly drawn as well. Passport going in the carryon.

That'll teach me to put off until tomorrow what I could have done 4 months ago!
