I am undecided on what to do. I want an e-reader (kindle or nook/color) not sure which one. My husband thinks I should just get an I-pad? After thinking about it I already have an I-phone(3g). What I need help on is should I get an I-Pad or should I just get a Kindle or color nook (not sure which one looking for opinions) AND upgrade to a I-phone 4? Thanks you all you help…

I was just as undecided but eventually went with the Nook and have been very happy. I do not have the color Nook so I can't speak to that. The main reason I went with an eReader opposed to iPad/laptop/phone was because the electronic ink is easier on the eyes. I work on a PC all day, I have a Blackberry for work and an iPhone for home. My eyes are constantly under the stress of backlighting from electronic sources. I love my Nook because I can read it for hours just like a regular book without issue. I wear contacts during the day and I love that when I take my contacts out at night and want to read in bed I can just bump up the type and read without further stress to my eyes.

Now you have the age old debate of Kindle vs. Nook and again, since I have a Nook I can't really say one is better than the other based-off of practical, daily use. However, I made my decision primarily because I loved the fact that I could go to the Barnes and Noble store at any point and time to talk to someone about my Nook if I had a problem. When I've had problems with Amazon products in the past it's been a real challenge getting extended customer service. B&N offers classes throughout the week at their stores on using, they have daily blogs and they give you a free book each week. Half the time I'm not sure I'm going to read them but I download it just in case. I've been real happy with it and haven't regretted the decision for a moment.

Good luck in your decision making.

I have an iPhone and an iPad - and I love them both. The iPad is NOT just a large iPhone. I downloaded the kindle app within a day of getting my iPad - and it's my favorite thing!! I love being able to read on the go (with so many book at hand), and I can get new books by just touching a button. Best Christmas present ever! :cool1:

You're right. It doesn't even make phone calls. :rotfl: It's a giant Ipod Touch. :lmao:

I had this decision to make over the holidays too. I ended up going with the kindle, but my reason was $$. If I could have chosen, I would have chosen the ipad because as someone mentioned you can have the kindle app and have your ereader, but you also have all the advantages of the ipad as well. I am thinking of putting back enough savings to be able to buy the next generation ipad when it comes out even though I have a Kindle.

I would wait a few weeks. Apple is rumored to be coming out with an ipad 2 and from everything I have been reading, they may make a smaller version, (the size of a kindle). While all of this is just speculation,it may be worth it to wait.

I want an ipad so badly but am waiting to see the new version:)

That's what I heard too so that's why I'm socking my money away but not making a purchase until those 2nd generations are around...i bought my ipod touch right before the new ones with cameras came out...i was so annoyed!
:rotfl:

The iPad has a major flaw as an e-reader. Its glossy screen is very hard on the eyes after a while and it is virtually unreadable outside in daylight. I have a friend that has an iPhone, an iPad and a Kindle for that very reason.

The rumors say the new ipad will be easier to read outside.

FYI on the Kindle. Through our library we have access to a couple of online companies where people can download ebooks for free. Neither one is compatible with the kindle. But both the nook and ipad are able to download ebooks. If you have any interest in something like that you might want to see what your library has available.

Personally I am going for the ipad when the next version comes out

iPad and nook owner here. My husband had to have the iPad and it is a fun thing to play on, check emails quickly, surf the net a bit. However, I don't like to read books on it. I received a gift card to B&N, so I picked up the nook for me. The good old fashioned nook, not nook color. I am amazed at how much more reading I am doing. It is very convenient and easy to just grab and go. I had lots of help from my dis budget friends to help me through the decision making. Good luck!

The iPad is an indoor device. Period. Of course you can walk outside with it but don't expect to be able to see a darn thing on the screen. Ditto for really bright interiors, as well. We use our iPad like a TV mostly. I watch movies and shows while I'm in the kitchen cooking. I can browse the web, but sites with Adobe Flash won't display properly. I use the Overdrive app on the ipad to look at travel books and other colorful publications from the library. Not novels. I would scratch my own eyes out if I had to read on the iPad.

Dedicated e-readers like Kindle and Nook are the best for reading for extended periods of time, indoors or out. Bar none. Side by side, the Kindle's screen and battery life surpass the Nook. The Nook color is like a small iPad that can't do what the iPad does.

You need to decide what it is you want to do the most. I have the iPad, the Kindle and (in a few days) the iPhone.

I don't see them as comparable products. I love our Nook, the e-ink is good on the eyes and both my daughter and I read a lot and get migraines. We've never had a problem with the Nook. It's our preferred e-reader. I would have another device to go online with, watch movies, etc. We are now looking at the Cruz Tablet as our secondary device. It would never replace the Nook though!

Just to throw some additional info into the mix ...

The Nook Color may be able to support the Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb - therefore turning it into a Droid tablet. Could be a great (and cheaper) combinaton of both worlds. Of course, this will take some time ...

I am "just" an iphone (3gs) user but use the kindle app to read on it all the time. Just finished a great book....there's several benefits to using the iphone.
1. it's small so you don't have to carry a large purse or separate case
2. because it's small you can pull it out at your desk at work or even in
the bathroom if you need to escape for a break, LOL
3. I have a matte screen protector on and find it very easy to read, no glare
4. I have kindle, nook and borders ereader apps plus a few others so have
lots of flexibility
5. I love the fact that I don't have to carry more than one thing around with potential for breakage, being stolen etc.

One drawback is battery life compared to ereaders.
My mom just got the ipad and after wanting one for awhile I decided I really didn't want to carry that thing around...maybe just for home use as a digital frame or for more than one to watch movies but my macbook does all that..so I'm left thinking I really don't need one afterall.

I love my iPad but NOT for reading. It get really heavy after a while and hurts my eyes.
So for book reading i would get a kindle just got one and i love it.

I have an ipad, iphone4 & kindle. I love them all and would hate to give any of them up! It's great to have the kindle app on my phone. I don't use it as a primary way to read because of the small screen but I love it when I don't have my kindle with me and I'm stuck in a line somewhere. I also love it waiting for the bus at night since it's too dark to read the kindle. If I want to read thou0gh, using the kindle is my first preference. I got the ipad 8 months after my kindle. I thought the kindle would start collecting dust but I still use it. I use my ipad more but I never actually read on it. I have the kindle app but I just don't find it comfortable for more than a few minutes. The thing is too heavy and screen is not as easy on my eyes.

I would say decide what you really want to use it for and pick your device from there. As a primary reader, I would go with the new kindle. I have the 2nd generation and wish I could come up with a reason to buy the newest one. I love the smaller size and the brighter screen. The good news is you really can't go wrong with any of the items you are considering. They are all great! :)

I agree if you will use your new device primarily for reading, go with the Kindle.

If you want an iPad, wait. The new version should be coming out soon.

I have both the Kindle 2 and an Ipad. I use the Ipad for reading when in a low light situation and the Kindle at all other times. The Kindle is so much less heavy and easy to handle (with one hand even). The Ipad is nearly impossible to read outdoors, so my Kindle goes with me to the pool and beach in the summer and for sitting outdoors.

You're right. It doesn't even make phone calls. :rotfl: It's a giant Ipod Touch. :lmao:
Nope, not that either..it has considerably more functionality than an iPod touch.. I use mine daily- my MacBook hasn't been getting used as much.

That said, I dont really read on mine. I use my Kindle or my Nook Color for that. You can web browse on the Nook Color and it's cheaper than the iPad if that's a consideration. Not as seamless as the iPad but still nice.
