My family usually uses debit cards and brings along a little cash for taxi, tip, etc. It's just a lot easier to use the debit cards wherever they are accepted (nearly everywhere) and not have to worry about losing cash. Just keep track of how much you are spending.

We take very little cash and use our debit (or credit) card for the majority of purchases. It's just easier to track things and less hassle (IMO) of having to deal with change!

ENJOY!

Well cash is the quickest and easiest method but is also the easiest to loose. My perfered method of payment is charging to my room. You can put down cash, debit, card, TC, or a CC. DH and I bring $50 (each) each day for little expenses and charge everything else. That way at the end of the trip I have an detailed reciept orf our purchases. they an also print this out anytime during your stay so you can see how much you've spent.

For me nothing works better than cash. But not everyone is comfortable carrying $2000 - $3000 in cash on them. Of course now that I have said that I'll probably stop carrying that much money on me. I'd say use a combo of things, credit card, debit card and cash, I think that's what I'm going to do this time. I don't really like travelers checks, I think they're a real pain, but American express has a new travel card that is similar to a prepaid credit card but has the benefits of travelers checks if it's lost or stolen. Maine :firefight

I prefer handing over all my cash or my credit card (whatever the case may be that trip) to the front desk to apply to my room charge. I do bring a little case for "just in cases" like taxis or tips or something...

In the past, if I've handed over my travelers checks or cash to the front desk to apply to my room charge, I'll stop by the front desk every few days to check my balance. At the end of the week, if I haven't spent it all, they'll refund my money on the spot.

Cash has always worked for me. I only carry a set amount with me each day we're there, allowing enough for meals and souvenirs. Charging is certainly easier, but much more tempting to exceed your limit and end up spending a lot more than you normally would.

I'm with you. It's much easier to keep track of what I'm spending if I have a set amount of cash each day. I bring travelers checks in large denominations; once used, they give you the balance back in cash.

I do think I might try the AMX travelers check card this time, though. I like the idea of just having one card -- but if it does get lost, what a hassle!!

They don't keep your card for the week. They'll run the card for a certain amount (whatever the hotel sets as a pre-spending limit) and hand you your card back. You'll get a receipt at the end of your stay with your charges listed on it.

All the above. I rely heavily on my debit card but carry cash for street vendors and travelers checks for emerg. back-up. This applies to all my vacations not just Disney.

You would hand the clerk your room card. They'd treat it like a credit card. And like I said, you can stop by the front desk every day if you wnat and check the balance of your room charge acct to make sure you don't overspend. Since you have to walk thru that bldg every day it's not a huge problem.

A few years ago, about 2 hours fresh off the plane, I lost my travelers cheques. What a way to start a vacation.! They were replaced within hours, just like in the commercial. (They were AMEX, by the way). I stand by tc. I just cannot imagine my charge card being replaced like that. I don't like to keep charging privileges on my room key. Go with the Travelers cheques.

So If I Want To Buy Something And Charge To My Room - What Do I Do?
Your room key card works as your charge card in the parks. It is taken and swiped just like a credit card. All restaurants, gift shops, and other places in Disney property take it. There might be one ot two food carts that don't take the room key (possibly the F&W festival booths?) but you should be able to use it everywhere you want. You can stop by the front desk at your resort anytime and get the balance of your charges. It is a great system.

Actually if you want to charge to your room you give them your credit/debit card and they run it for authorization (usually $1 or less), once you reach the resort level limit ($500 at value, increases with mod and deluxe) they will charge the card for that amount and you start over. You will not get a $500 hold on your card (at least I didn't). When you want to purchase something in the parks or at the resort, the CM swipes your room key card and sign the slip. You can go to the front desk and request a printout of your room charges at anytime. You can even pay them off in cash or travelers checks at that time as well.

EDIT - didn't realize mom was posting much of the same thing.

We put all of the character meals/shows & major souveniers on the credit cards. We like to track the big stuff.

But for little meals & drinks & the rest, we use travelers checks or the cash back from those checks. We bring a certain amount of travelers checks each trip based on our spending habits from the previous trip.
