I am trying to decide if my DD4 will do OK on Soarin when we go in November. Just FYI, she is FREAKED OUT by Mickey's Philharmagic. Its not the movie, but the effects that freak her out, like the water spray and the puffs of air. She enjoys the movie, but always ends up climbing into mine or DH's lap for part of it after the water spray. She likes kiddie rollercoasters and other rides, it's the darkness and the effects of the movie that freak her out.

So can someone tell me about the details of the effects of Soarin? Are there similar effects that might make it not enjoyable for her?

I know that knowing the details may spoil the ride for me, but I'd rather know than have a bad experience for DD that will put her off other rides.

Thanks!

Soarin's effects are very gentle. You feel 'wind' in your face but it is not a puff, it's a very gentle breeze. There is no water spray or anything like that. I think the most shocking thing about Soarin is being lifted off the ground, it's a little unexpected. If you're in the third row it's a lot less of an effect than if you are in the first row. Also, you can tell her that if at any time she doesn't like what she is seeing she can look at you instead and that will kill the intensity of it. (it's not intense but I don't think my 5 year old would enjoy it, to her it would be intense) We saw plenty of kids that age that just loved it!

Well, it does start out dark. It's basically an IMAX aerial tour of California. You are lifted up with your feet dangling to simulate hang gliding over the scenes. There are gentle dipping & turning motions. No scary images. You are securely belted in and are hip to hip, so you can hold hands. I've ridden it about 10 or more times and have never heard crying, just giggling, oohs and ahhs.

I have a friend who just came back and said her 3yo DD was terrified of 3D rides (Muppets, etc) but LOVED Soarin' and wanted to ride it again.

Also note that all flyers have a lap belt around them, so DD will not be able to crawl onto your lap if she gets scared...

I know. Thats partly what I'm worried about. If she got scared and was then restrained so that she couldn't get to me or DH, I think she would REALLY freak out.

My son did not like the fireworks at the end. He loved the rest of the ride, but would not ride again because of the fireworks.

As gopack said - the only thing that could be construed as "rough" is the fireworks scene at Disneyland at the end of the ride. When the final burst happens, the cars shake a little bit - in reaction to it.

Other than that, there is NOTHING at all like the 4D films in the parks feature. Theey pump in some different fragrances (pine, sea spray, orange) - but there's no violent air releases or water squirts.

You may want to just try it out for yourself and see if it's something she'll like, or if she won't like it.

You've answered your own question. Don't do it if you think she would freak...

is it the back row of soarin that goes up in the air the least? I'm debating on taking DD4 on it as well, and I'm wondering if we could request and wait for a row towards the back? How many rows are there?

When you get to the point where they assign your "gate", just ask to be seated in Row 3.

My dd4 had similar "issues" :) with the 3D movies because of the startling sudden bursts of noise, air, water, whatever. But she looooooved Soarin' -- it is very gentle, and so are the effects. The breeze is consistent, not a sudden blast to the face. If you're still not certain, ride it yourself and get a child swap pass first.

My 5 year old hated all of the 4D movies, but she loved Soarin'. She rode it 4 times and is still talking about it.

My DD-5 just rode it last month and totally enjoyed every minute of it. I talked to her very softly through the whole thing. One segment features surfers and I kind of made her laugh by saying let's see if we can knock them off their boards, and she definitely tried to kick at them. She loved the smells and it was very gentle. We held hands, but she thoroughly enjoyed it. We were in the first row too!

hate all the 3-D movies. During the Muppets, he was hiding under the seat. However, he loved Soaring. It's very gentle.

We just got back last week. My 6 yr old, who is very easily scared, loved Soarin'. She continued to hate Philharmagic this year, just like last. (And we were on the 1st row!)

I think she may freak out a little & how tall is she? You have to be 40", my dd4 is only 37 & couldn't ride anyway, but they can give you the childswitch pass (it's just like a fastpass) your Dh can ride & then when he gets off, hand your dd over to him & you get to go back in the fastpass line..

HTH!
Chip

We can't wait to do Soarin'! My DD4 (5 in December) is really excited about it. She is very tall and meets the height requirements for just about everything, but there are some that I am making sure she skips.

BTW, my DH was raised in CA and misses it terribly. He is more excited than any of us about this ride...

At her 4 year ped appt she was just over 40 inches. She's 50th percentile for height.

I am still debating about Soarin. I think I will describe the ride to her and see what she wants to do. The child swap sounds like a good plan though. How long is Soarin?
