I just booked a trip for December with my Mom. She has terrible arthritis in her back and just had both knees replaced...therefore limiting her ability to walk completely around the parks. When I made the ressies I requested a WC on check in. Would it be easier to get an ECV/scooter? I don't know how well she would do backing the thing up to get on the bus but it might be easier for her to get around instead of me pushing her.

How much do these cost and where would I rent them from if we did decide to do that?

Hi and :welcome: to disabilities.

If you check out the "disABILTIES! FAQ" which is the first sticky in the index you will get a lot of your questions about ECVs answered.

You cannot reserve a wc at the Resorts; they are loaned on a first-come, first-served policy. And unless you have experience in pushing wheelchirs it can be very tiring; WDW has hills which most people don't notice.

Most of teh buses, especially the newer ones, have shallow ramos and you can both drive up and drive down. If it is necessary for backing into a bus, another member of the party can drive it for her when critical backing is necessary.

You might go to a large grocery store or other major store and have her practice using one. Note that the store ones are very large and much harder to drive than any others because of the basket up front.

And as a general rule the off-site rentals are in the $30/day rage, usually cutting off at $200 for a week and then the price going down per day for longer rentals.

Mom agreed to the ECV...yay...so can someone recommend to me which place they like best for renting one?

Most people who have rented have used either Care, Randy's or Walker and have been happy with them. Note that Randy's requires you to be present both when they drop it off and pick it back up. All the others will leave it at your Resort Bell Services so it is there on your arrival and will pick it up from Bell Services after you leave.

We rented from Randy's for my FIL last Spring. For someone who has little experience, Randy's is nice because you have to be there for delivery and pick up. You have a chance to see anything you need demonstrated and get all your questions answered before the delivery person leaves.

Sue - will they (Randy's) deliver it to your room or to guest services?
They bring it right to your room.
We were given a phone number to call when we arrived and then hooked up with the guy who would actually do the delivery. We were given a choice of delivery times. He showed up exactly on time, knocking at our door at OKW. He drove the ECV in, made sure we knew how to drive it and charge it up. he offerred to show us how to take it apart and put it back together. Since we were only planning on using the buses, we didn't have him show us. He also made a tentative pick up time (we could call to reschedule if it turned out the time was not convenient).
They were very nice to work with, convenient and the ECV looked nearly new.

I used Randy's last September - my first time with an ECV. I ditto SueM in MN's experience. They were always on time to the minute.

I had NEVER driven an ECV before so I wanted the "lessons". The man who delivered and picked up could not have been a nicer person. He was just great - punctual, polite, understanding.

I did have him show me how to take it apart as I wanted to go to Florida mall one day. It was fabulous being able to take in the entire mall.

I was staying at BCV so I practiced driving around past the Swan and Dolphin, thru Boardwalk and back to BCV. I'd always wanted to do that as a walk but was never up to it. I felt like a pro by then.

Thank you both so much. Sounds like Randy's is the one. Do you have a website?
Their phone number and a link to their website is in the disABILITIES FAQs thread, stuck neat the top of this board.
