I need help with my cat.

I will try to make this short as possible. About a month or so ago, he had a UTI and we took him to the vet and got antibiotics. While he was sick he peed on the couch once. Now he is better but now he has taken to peeing on the couch. Does anyone know a way to make him stop? I have already tried-
• cleaning with soap and water and then sprinkling baking soda on the area
•spraying the area with orange cleaning spray
•placing orange peels around the area

Hold your nose, but try good old fashioned vinegar. The smell will destroy the ammonia smell that is causing your cat to return to the scene of the crime, if you will.

It may take a few tries cleaning with the vinegar.

Cats alert us to their 'plumbing' problems by going to the bathroom in areas they normally wouldn't.

I wonder if he has another infection or another problem completely.

Other then making the couch smell nice, oranges don't have an affect on cat's behavior.

Exactly. And male cats are notorious for ongoing urinary issues. It can be a chronic problem and not a one time infection.

Look up FUS in cats.

He will use his litterbox when I take him down and guide him to it. If it was another infection, he would be too uncomfortable to use it. When he did have the UTI, there was blood in his urine but now that he is better it doen't have any discoloration to it.

A cat peeing on your couch is telling you he is uncomfortable.

He maybe developing FUS. You need to do some reading to understand cats and urinary problems.

Vinegar is a good suggestion. Also, try some of the many products that are made specifically for pet stains / smells. They generally have specific enzymes and other ingredients to break down the ammonia. It's likely that there's lingering smell in either the fabric or (more likely) the padding underneath that needs to be eradicated.

One thing that worked for me (to keep my cat from returning to the same patches of carpet after her UTI was taken care of) -- I put puppy pads in the exact places she liked to pee. So she would go to those spots, but pee on the pads. Every day I would move the pads closer and closer to the litter box until one day she finally figured out that "Oh ... right ... litter box." Not a problem after that. Plus the added benefit that when I take her to the vet or in the car, I can put down a puppy pad and if she has to pee, she heads straight for it.

Another suggestion is to startle kitty any time he starts to pee on the couch. If you can catch him doing it, blow a whistle or rattle a can of change or something else loud when he jumps on the couch and "assumes the position." He'll start associating the loud noise with peeing on the couch. Of course, you also risk him associating the loud noise with the couch in general, so he may stop jumping up there to sit with you or for other reasons.

not necessarily, my female pees on stuff because she gets mad or if her litter box needs to be cleaned..( she wont use in "her" box if her brother goes in it...thats how picky she is~~) I have taken her to the vets many times and not once has a had an infection. She is just moody... chances are your cat peed on the couch when he had the infection but pees there now because he can still smell it.

She is just moody... chances are your cat peed on the couch when he had the infection but pees there now because he can still smell it.

Crinkle up tin foil and cover the couch - looks ridiculous but it's worked for us.

Also - maybe get his thyroid tested. Our doc said its almost like they have a bit of Alzheimer’s, so we got him some meds to regulate and he is doing much better.

I've also heard citrus but that didnt work for us

You must completely eliminate the smell or he will continue to return to it. Have you tried soaking the cushion in Nature's Miracle? Or possible replacing the single cushion (stuffing)?

I have tried the Nature's Miracle, but haven't tried soaking the cushion. Also, I got my Cat Fancy issue in the mail today and there was an article about cats peeing where they shouldn't. They had an ad for Ewww cleaning product so that is next on the list...

On a lighter note - I wanted to mention that looking at his picture he is up to his eyeballs in pee, poor baby. Just kidding, but I did crack up as his eyes show up yellow for me.

Good luck, hope your kitty isn't still sick. You have to admit, it's lots more comfortable standing on a couch to pee than on crunchy little rocks....

I have a cat that is perfectly healthy yet he refuses to use the perfectly clean litter boxes. He was beaten as a kitten and I think his problem comes from that.

Our cat, grumpy, had urinary issues when he was alive. Several years ago, after multiple infections, the veterinarian, a feline specialist, recommended omitting fish from his diet. This is difficult but doable. We found a Rand that did not have it. We only bought treats that were fish free...that was tough. He was infection free and then one day, he peed where he shouldn't...the cat food we relied upon was "new and improved". It now contained fish meal. So we found a new bround and checked the label twice with every purchase. Fish would mean a $90 vet bill.

So get your kitty recheckes and maybe consider eliminating fish (not just flavor....must have no fish additives).

He was our only cat with this issue. Once he passed, we didn't have to do the check any more.
