I need child rearing help (chore related)

There's a guy on a local radio station here who THROWS AWAY any stuff his kids leave on the floor after he's told them to pick up. Text books, game systems, clothes, coats, it doesn't matter.

Now, I don't know that I'd go that far, but I'd at least put them in a garbage bag and make them either earn it back or wait a year for its return!!!

Maybe that'd be incentive enough to get them to take it away. Whatever YOU have to clean up, you get to keep.

Probably because we only see him twice a year and he is in so few of my layouts I post here, since most I post are Disney!! He lives in South Dakota.

I have heard about parents that throw away toys left on the floor... or better yet, donate them to charity or a shelter. We have actually done this before, but we kind of only do it when we want to get rid of a certain toy... so it's not really a good plan for us. DH threatens to do it more then he should because he would never follow through and he doesn't seem to understand that if you won't / can't go through with a threat, then it should never come out of your mouth.

Awhile back there was a mom on the Today show that got tired of her kids stuff laying around and she put it all on ebay. The kids didn't take her seriously, but they did when she sold it all for a pretty penny. I think she explained on the auction that she was tired of picking up the kids toys and so here they were. I can't remember if she donated the money to charity or not- she got a lot of money from it.

My friend has three kids - 10, 8 and 2. She used to use chore jars - pasta sauce jars for each kid with folded pieces of paper listing their chores. The kids would have to pick one piece each day and do that chore. She says it's working really well.

One of my Scout's moms does the "store display" thing with rewards. She buys DVDs, video games, movie tickets and gift cards to smoothie/ice cream shops and puts them all on a shelf. Her kids earn points for completing chores on their chart and get to "shop" in the store. She had her kids help come up with the prices for the different items and the points they earned for each chore. It works beautifully for her.

Shauna that is an awesome idea! Of course DH is sitting here, trying to take the fun out of it. LOL

I think I will try the store too. video games, dvd's etc can all be different points and they can bank points for big items like a day out somewhere.

Dona, I don't even want to think about college. I used to go pick up my brother at school and bring him home on the weekends, I swear he brought every stitch of clothing home to wash. He didn't want to pay for the machines in the dorms!
