Does anyone have any recomendations for campgrounds to stay at on the way back to Ohio from the Fort? I would like to be near or even on the beach, somewhere between Daytona and Savannah. A pool would be nice for the kids. Thanks!

James County Island Parks, Charleston. I have not stayed here yet, but I have heard good reviews from a gal who lives in Charleston and goes there often, and I have read good reviews(click me) and one of these days hope to use it as a base to explore Charleston.

Closer to the area you requested is Anastasia State Park in St Augustine. I haven't stayed here either, but have read very good reviews. And North Beach Camp Resort, too.

Hope it helps.

We stay at the Savannah South KOA on the way down, just overnight. It has a pool that will be open in September and a large pond on property, but I really don't know if it will fit your needs since, like I said, we just stop in for overnight.

Charleston is a little further north than I would like to go, but I have looked into the other two. I am strongly considering Anastasia SP and North Beach looks good too except the sites aren't actually on the beach. I suppose that ocean front real estate is too valuable to waste on us backwards camping types!

How far from I-95 do you want to go?

Not more than 30 minutes or so.

We will be staying at Savannah South on the way down as well. I have not stayed there before but we usually don't use more than a campground's showers on the way to the Fort. It is on the way home that I am not in a hurry!

We've stayed at Savannah KOA and Anastasia SP. The Savannah KOA is a nicer KOA-it's been 3 yrs. since we've stayed there. -I think it's Exit 87? and it's right there off of I-95. There is a McDonald's at the exit.:)

Anastasia SP is one of our favorite campgrounds. It's about 15-20 min. drive to the park from I-95. The campsite isn't on the beach but it's walking distance. If you can get into the Coquina section (site #129 is our favorite) it's close to the beach and easier access to getting in and out of the park. The lighthouse is about 500 ft. from the entrance of the park. The ft. is a few miles down the street and over the bridge. if you have time it's worth it. The oldest school house is across from the ft. along with a huge playground if you have children.
Anastasia is where we are heading for Spring Break 09:thumbsup2

We also stay at the Savannah South (Richmond Hill) KOA coming back from WDW.

FWIW there is a KFC just up the road (less than a mile) and they have IIRC three spaces in the back for like 18 wheelers. Last time (Jan 2008) we were going to check-in and then go pick up KFC and then park, but they insisted that we be escorted to our site upon registration (we've been staying there of the last 20+ years and this was a first. Anyway no problem with the KFC, but depending upon the time of day and how big your rig is getting out (you have to turn left across like a 6 lane blvd) can take some time waiting for traffic to clear) to get back to the CG. For just overnighters we don't normally unhook.

Always liked Savannah KOA since our youngest was taught to start swimming in their pool by his Aunt and I/the boys liked playing ping pong in the rec center.

If we don't stay at the FamCamp at NAS Jax, we stay there sometimes going down, but if staying at either NAS Jax, KOA Jax, or St. Augustine KOA going down we often stay at the Point South KOA since it's only 140 miles to Jax from Savannah and Point South puts that at close to 200 miles. Whew some of these hard drives really take it out of you :lmao: :rotfl2:

Does anyone know how you can get to the historic area without a car? We were thinking of going here sometime with the kids, but we would only have our 26 ft MH...no car. Is there a shuttle or bus available?

Tybee Island off of Savannah is nice - the campgound spaces aren't the most private, but the beach is a ten minute walk and the river less. Our kids loved it. The people that run the camp are very nice and helpful also. If you go in summer remember the bug spray.
It is about half an hour off of 95 and it gave our kids the chance to romp in the ocean.
If you go anywhere near Savannah Conan the Librarian is who to talk to - he gave us the best directions and recommendations.

Do I hear my name being used? :)

Tybee is more like 45 minutes to an hour from Tybee, but, you would be on Tybee! :)

Skidaway Island is a Georgia State Park with a pool, but, I don't know when it closes for the season. It's a little closer than Tybee.

Ft McAllaster State Park in Richmond Hill 'may' have a pool. Their campground is on the water, but, I don't know if they allow swiming off the dock. It's about 20 min from I-95.

If you need directions in the Savannah area, just send me a PM.

We'll be at WDW at the end of the month, but, I'll check in anyway.

If you wanted to go a little more north, we really enjoyed our stay at Hunting Island State Park just north of Paris Island. We had a site with water and electric for $20 per night just a short walk from the beach. Some are right on the beach. I got that advice right here on the DIS boards! We stayed there on the way down to de-stress and get into vacation mode.

On the way home, we stayed at the New Green Acres RV park right off Rte 95 in SC. Highly recommend it for a quick stop off the highway, almost all sites are huge, level, pull-through sites with full hook-ups. Also shaded by tall trees. I think it was $26 for the night.http://www.newgreenacres.com/sitemap.pdf

We stay at the New Green Acres over night and then Ft. Chiswell, VA before hitting OH. Going home we like to take the most direct route. Going down we stayed at Van Hoye Farm, NC and Flamingo Lake, Jacksonville. This next trip (June 09) we're going to spend an extra day in Jacksonville because the place is so nice. Everything else will be over-night because that's about how far we can tow safely...really wears you out doing a bunch of towing in one day and we want to get to FW ASAP.
