She loves monsters, murder, blood, gore and adventure. I bought her "a series of unfortunate events" but it is too difficult for her to read. Any suggestions?
(no fairies or princesses please)

Check out the American Chillers series by Jonathan Rand. There are a whole bunch of them, and they are written at a 3rd - 4th grade reading level. The kids at my school love them.

Magic Tree house is about a 1.5-2nd grade level. Those may be too easy.

Goosebumps is about 3.5-4th grade if you don't mind scary. RL Stine (author of Goosebumps) also does another series called Fear Street. I would check out a Goosebumps or Fear Street book and go from there.

My son liked Harry Potter, but that is more 5th-6th. Artemis Fowl is another interesting one (deals with semi morbid topics) but that is high 5th.

Lemony Snicket is about a high 3rd-5th grade level so it would be a bit difficult--but I would definetely try again at the end of the school year.

Junie B. books and Mostly Ghostly series are a couple of my 3rd grade DD's favorites. She loves mysteries also. Junie B. isn't so much mystery but boy does that girl get into mischief.

I remember James and the Giant Peach from 3rd grade as well as Indian in the cupoard..... funny Ithink both have been made into movies? I do not know I have not watched them but i did love the books.

My 3rd grader loves Magic Treehouse books! She also likes Junie B. Jones and American GIrl books.

Roald Dahl does have some excellent books-- James and the Giant Peach is a great suggestion! My daughter read that last year in 3rd grade.

Here's a hint on book leveling/readibility.

Some childrens books publish reading levels right on the back of the book. It will say RL 4.5 (example). RL=reading level 4.5 = Fourth grade, 5th month.

What about the book Bunnicula about a vampire bunny that sucks the juice out of vegetables? My third graders love that...and there have been a few sequels to it.

Roald Dhals' books are all great- and there are many many out there-

My dd loves Magic Tree House books too... and Bailey's school kids...

Secrets of Droon was also just recommended by my dd who is in 3rd grade

She's a middle of the road reader- does better than some not as well as others- but really likes those books above...

Have you thought of going to a book store or library and telling them some of your dd's likes... Judy Moody series was recommended the last time I went to one of the book stores- but dd hasn't grabbed onto it yet...

My third grade son loves the Bailey School Kids series. They can be found in a wide variety of silly topics (suspense and mystery) and are a good choice for second - third grade readers. Your local library should have many of these books.

Why do people worry about the reading level of a book, if a kid is reading it is a great thing. My kids all loved reading Magic Tree House in 3rd grade and yes, it was below their reading level but they liked the fact they could read it in an evening and find another book to read. They also read Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings in 3rd grade, big deal. You will develop a love for books much easier if they are not a chore to read.

Well, because if you get a book that is too hard for them they can get discouraged. On the other end, some kids get bored if the books are too easy and again, stop reading.

It's fine to read books below their level but they also need to be challenged just enough so that their skills improve.

Thank you. I will try to take her to the library tomorrow (they have no school AGAIN) and see if she likes any of the suggestions.
