Okay so we are surprising our boys (11 & 16) with a trip to Disney in just a few weeks. The first time we took them we surprised them at the airport and thought there was no way we would ever be able to surprise them again. We usually go every other year but decided to go this year as a surprise. We leave on a Friday and need to tell them the weekend before. Here is my idea....we go out for Chinese food and at the end of the meal, the waitress brings over one of those giant fortune cookies and just leaves it on the table with the check and just walks away. We all sit there puzzled for a minute then I will say.....what kind of fortune comes in a cookie that big? They open it and it tells them we are going to Disney. Here is where you all come in....
1. Does anyone have a better idea to surprise them?
2. If you like the idea, I need help thinking of something to write inside. I was originally think something starting with - Confucius say....blah, blah, blah or maybe a cute little rhyme.
So what do you all think?
I would really appreciate help with this, I have been racking my brain for weeks.
TIA, Melissa

I love your idea. :thumbsup2

I hope this isn't too corny:

Summer is almost over, let’s end it in style,
Mickey and his friends say that they haven’t seen us in awhile,
So pack your bags and get ready for some fun,
We’re going to Disney, our journey has just begun!

Who would read the fortune? You could break into two different fortunes and have one ds read one and the other ds read the next one. Or 4 fortunes and you each read one line at a time. You'd just have to be sure to read them in order.

I love it!!!! :worship::worship::worship::worship:
Corny is my middle name!!

or... rather than figure out how to make a fortune cookie, have everyone read their fortune followed by the words "at Disney" (instead of "in bed" like some people do), then tell the boys that they'll get a chance to see if their fortunes come true.

How about using invisible ink on the fortunes or have it in reverse writing or use another language (Babelfish or similiar site may be handy for this)?

I thought "Master Chef" was your middle name.

BTW, I like the idea too.

I have a lot of middle names...most of which I would get kicked off the boards for posting.:rolleyes1

I love this idea! You could also take it to the next level and do a scavenger hunt with the fortune cookies by adding a different message in each cookie and the last cookie has the big surprise trip - here is a recipe to bake the fortune cookies:
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Fortune-Cookies-I/Detail.aspx

I like the idea...minus the baking! I cant stand the whole measuring thing....Master Chef, but no baker! lol!!!

BTW, if you put one in the microwave they will open up so you can change out the fortune and mold it right back in place.

only problem with this is I have never done the "in bed" thing with the kids, so they would probably just think I was weird. ;)

I love the fortune cookie idea! Be sure to take pictures and let us know how it goes. You know how fortune cookies always have lucky numbers at the bottom?- you could put the dates of your trip or the date you are leaving as the lucky numbers. I love BCVdreamers little poem, it's really cute. If you wanted to go silly you could have them each open one that says something silly like for the 16 year old "An encounter with a princess is soon on the horizon. You may just be her Prince charming" -haha, that will get him laughing or he would be too embarrassed to read it!

Or if they have a favorite ride like Haunted Mansion or Tower of terror you could have it say something like "Beware of hitchhiking ghosts, you may see some sooner than you think!" or "If you check into a deserted hotel, avoid the elevator if you want to stay in this dimension..." You could have all of the clues relate to their favorite things in WDW and hopefully they would connect the dots.

Have fun!

The more I think about this, the more I really like it. If things fall into place and we can attend Marathon weekend, I would like to surprise DP similarly (if I may be so bold as to steal your idea....)

Which leads to what would I put in a fortune cookie for Marathon weekend which is in January (read: in the snow)

I am glad you like the idea...and you are more than welcome to it.

Thanks to everyone for their help. My DH and I decided we are going to stick with the giant fortune cookie idea and inside a slight variation on bcvdreamer's poem. I will be sure to post pics for you all to see how it went. Again thanks for all your input, it really did help!! :thumbsup2

HELP!!!!
I just went to order it and because its summer and hot out you have to pay for an ice pack and do 2day shipping. I found a small discount code, but still the total cost is $44.....is it just me or does that seem like a lot for a big fortune cookie? :confused3

Sorry I'm a little late to the conversation but the message I would use is.....

Help, I'm being held hostage in a Chinese Bakery at Walt Disney World. Come save me - Mickey Mouse

That's a good one!

Hmmm... perhaps there's a reason people were calling you a genius?

That does seem high. Upthread, I saw a suggestion to microwave existing cookies to get them to soften so you could replace the fortune. That might be a less expensive option... and easier than making the dough, then folding it, imo. :)

I googled "open fortune cookie" and found this:

"Wet a white paper towel and wring it out (no drips). Unwrap one fortune cookie and rewrap it in the damp paper towel. Place the towel-wrapped cookie on a plate. Bake on high in a microwave for 20-30 seconds. Remove quickly and open the soft cookie. Promptly replace the stock message with your proposal. Close the cookie in its original shape. You have about 12-15 seconds to do this because once the cookie cools it is brittle. (In the test, three out of four cookies did not break.) Let cool."

I happened to have a fortune cookie so I tried it and it worked! I am sure you could get some from the restaurant, carefully open then, switch the fortune, then reseal the package with a dab of glue. You might want to get a few extras in case one breaks. When the cookie cooled, I ate it and it tastd fine!

See? This is why the Dis is so great. Friends whom you've never met will microwave their old cookies, cover them in water and then eat them to see if they still taste great. Where else can you get such great friends??? By the way, I vote for John's fortune :rotfl2: That was too funny:worship:!
