HELP!

A co-worker just took a new job, so there will be an internal opening in the next week or so. Right now, I'm a receptionist. This job is the next logical step 'up' in my office. Here's the thing... I'm also working on creating my own online business, and am hoping that it takes off to full-time income status so I can work from home. I don't have any kids, but I like the idea of being able to work from home.

Here's my dilemma... do I pursue this new job, keep working on my new company, or both at the same time? I'm pretty overwhelmed as it is right now, but the new job would be a $$ increase. But, with the $$ increase, it also brings new/more responsibility. I would have to travel during some of September and October by myself, would have to sometimes present to LARGE groups of people... BUT, I would be in a team environment (which I'm kinda an outsider right now...) with more $$ and a constantly varied schedule. Hours would be the same, office would be the same.

If you were in my situation, what would you do? Focus on the business I'm building or pursue this new job? I sometimes like choices, and I sometimes REALLY DON'T like choices!!

I would at least apply for the new job and here's why. It's a true fact that many new business ventures fail within the first year or never get off the ground at all. It's not a reflection on you, just a fact. Yours may be one that succeeds and I hope it is. However, until you're confident of that success, you need a back up plan.

The new job would give you more $$$ you said. That would be more money to save and apply toward growing your own business and to sock away against the day you are on your own and the income doesn't come in as fast as you thought it would. You might also make some valuable contacts when you're on the road who turn into future clients.

I know it's hard to work two jobs. I've done it. I had a full time job the whole time I was trying to launch my own business and for probably two years after it looked like I was going to make it on my own. I wanted that income and security. I'm assuming that your new job/current job offers benefits. That's huge because you don't want to start out having to spend your limited income from your new venture on expensive health insurance.

Here's the way I would look at it. If you didn't have your own business, would you want this other job? Is it something you would like to do? If the answer is yes, then I would go for it. That way, if the business fails or takes longer to get going than you think, you have something you like to do to fall back on that pays more money. If/when the business takes off, then you can decide whether to keep doing both or to drop the job. But I'd for sure keep myself in a position where I had a good back up plan until then. (Unless of course you have tons of savings, won the lottery, or got a big inheritance that would give you enough money to live on for a few years.)

I go for the new job and have that security as I tried to get my new business off and running. Good luck with your decision!

I would also apply for the position, then you have that security. Once your business takes off, then you can quit the position.

ITA with all the others, go for the new job, you have nothing to lose and the experience will be great for you new business too! Good Luck!

That's a no brainer.

Job offers are rare and precious this day and age. Your home business can exist as long as you choose to. I have a home business that runs if I'm working or not. Working supplies insurance, a 401K and stability, not to mention income that can build your home business.

Like everyone said... take the offer. You CAN do both. I do and I'm a single parent.:thumbsup2

Thanks! I just told my director that I'm interested in applying for the job. She's thrilled! :goodvibes

Now if I can only adapt to change... I have butterflies and nervousness already and I haven't even applied yet!

Update: I applied for the job today! They're going to start reviewing the applications on July 28... here's hoping for good news!

I HAVE A PHONE INTERVIEW IN 30 MINUTES FOR THIS POSITION AHHHH!!!!

Thanks everyone! It went well! I should hear back about a group interview/presentation in the next day or so!

Glad the interview went well! :cool1: Please come back and let us know the outcome! Crossing my fingers for you...:)

Well guys, I hate to say this, but....

I talked to my director today. She was SO impressed (to the point of being surprised for some reason?) with how well that I interviewed this morning, but they have decided to look outside and bring in people with 'more experience'. Basically a slap in the face to me. They're not even letting me do the group interview/presentation. Why? I have no idea. I know that they KNOW I would do very well. I'm very bitter, especially because of all of the positive feedback I got from my director and everyone else that was in on the interview. I have a feeling that politics have something to do with this because it just doesn't make sense. I'm the only internal candidate and have worked in my office for 3 years. The whole office loves me as a person and I have implemented many new processes. I have a bachelor's degree from the school that I work at, and make less per year than it costs for a year of schooling there. Makes me sick. Time to move on.

Thanks for all of your pixie dust :wizard: throughout the process. I know that YOU guys believed in me at least!

I am so sorry! I can understand how frustrated and disappointed you must be.

I am sorry about the "slap in the face." We had something like this happen at our work too. I took it as a sign to move on. I hope everything works out in the end. It sounds like it might for you. :wizard:
