I just moved here and I dont know a soul. I am now working night shift, so I sleep during the day and try to stay up at night to get into a normal sleep pattern. I am bored and lonely! I need a hobby, something to do at night while the df is sleeping and something that will keep me awake and use my brain. Any suggestions?

Scrapbooking! We do our best work during all night crop sessions! You can do it digitally if you prefer to use the computer. :)

Yes scrapbooking is indeed a nice hobby. I do it for all our disney trips. BUT I spend too much money on it :( You could even do geneology! I bet that research eats up a lot of time! I bet you are sick of infomercials!

Do surveys for gift cards and money for Disney trips. those are time consuming.

My "normal" hobbies are NaNoWriMo - every November, I churn out a (terrible) 50,000 word novel. So far, I have won four times, but only two of them will even see revision - the other two were such stinkers that I don't even want to look at them.

I paint. Badly, but I do paint. I read.

My "odd" hobbies are painting miniatures and gaming. Both can take up many hours in the middle of the night.

I can get lost for hours working on a jigsaw puzzle. I do the 1,000-1,500 piece puzzles. I find it extremely relaxing, and get a real feeling of satisfaction seeing the puzzle take shape. I'm very methodical about the way I work the puzzle, and God help the person that comes along and tries to fit in a piece here and there. NOBODY is to touch my puzzle!:rotfl:

I'm also particular about the puzzles I do. I love summer/beach themed or tropical-looking puzzles, puzzles with a lot of color, and puzzles that match the current season or holiday. I saw a 1,500 piece Coca-Cola/Christmas jigsaw puzzle at Hallmark that I must buy.:)

We have a guest room in our house that is usually not occupied, so I have a table set up in there with whatever puzzle I happen to be working on. I love to take a snack to the guest room, put on an old movie or sit-com on the tv, and work on a puzzle.:)

I suggest cross stitch for a hobby. It is inexpensive and you can do it just about anywhere. Plus, you can see the results as you go along. It is not hard to learn to do and it is a nice way to pass the evening.

I am struggling to stay awake right now! Thank you for the great suggestions! keep em coming!

Stained glass! You can begin with a tiny little suncatcher...about the size of a Christmas ornament, and build on that until you can make windows for a cathedral. Really...there's no end to what you can do. I love it! :thumbsup2

cooking! I bought some cook books and kind of taught myself by trial and error! Get inspired by watching Julie & Julia. I would love to take a cooking class!

Well there are so many activities on internet that can never let you sleep at night. I would suggest you to join online social networks, make friends, communicate with them, share things etc. I bet you will never feel sleepy. its my personal hobby too.

I always enter when I can't sleep at night.

I cross stitch, make jewelry, do word searches and those puzzles where you look at 2 pictures and try to figure out what's different.

I used to crotchet and paint houses for my christmas village but I now have enough of those.

I play games on Facebook and read. I sometimes do jigsaw puzzles but it's hard to find a spot to do them where I can keep them out all the time.

One of my sisters quilts, another scrapbooks and the 3rd sews and reads for her hobbies.

Good luck finding the right hobby for you!

What are your interests? Are you crafty? Are you into something that you'd love to know more about? Find that thing that you love more than anything and you'll have your hobby! No one can suggest one better than you. :thumbsup2

I subscribe to a few magazines and enjoy reading those. Also love to read books. I used to cross-stitch, but haven't in years but have been thinking of taking it up again this winter. I enjoy cooking and baking. Doing word search puzzles. Watching a few favorite programs on TV, and movies (Netflix). Love message boards like this one. :goodvibes Can chat for hours on them with people. I enjoy playing Frontierville on Facebook, and I'm thoroughly addicted to playing the Sims 3 (a new expansion pack just came out last week). Walking is something else I enjoy, but not at night. I do the Walk Away The Pounds DVD's at home though, usually 5 times/week. I enjoy doing research on the computer for our upcoming trips/vacations. I can usually find something to do to keep myself occupied. :) I've thought about scrapbooking, but I think that could turn into quite an expensive hobby so I haven't pursued it. I hope you find some things you enjoy to pass the time.

It has to be something I can do in the middle of the night, and help me stay awake. Reading puts me to sleep. No cooking classes in the middle of the night.

I would LOVE to try cake decorating and I do love to cook. :) I am not relally very artistic, I think I am going to try puzzles & then cross stitch! Thank you for all the ideas!

Check on YouTube. There are lots of instructional craft videos nowadays. You might not need to take a class to start something. :surfweb:
