First check your state laws. Your Banker sould be able to advise you on where to check.

I only buy Hertz cars. They have the maintenace records of each car they have for sale. No high pressure salesmanship. Have five days to return for full refund if you decide you do not like the car.
Hertz only purchases cars with a good reliable maintence record.
Have the best financng terms. Go to hertz.com and search for car saes. Only downside is they do not take trade in, but Carmax buys cars.

Take it to a mechanic that you trust and have them look at it and tell you everything that needs fixed, replaced, and what will need fixed in the near future.

Try carfax.com and experian.com. You can pay to do title checks. You can check for any major accidents (that have had insurance claims) and odometer fraud, etc. It's better than nothing. Good way to get a feel for the cars you are looking at.
