I love credit cards so much!

Wow you guys go so fast around here. I went on vacation and there's been 1093 messages since the last page I read... oops notification that messages have been posted as I type this, so 1093+....This is going to take a while to catch up, took a while just to figure out what page I left off at

So hubby thinking he was helping me out made two goofs this week (and people wonder why I don't want him to 'help' me with things, hehe), the relevant one for here is he just applied for a new AmEx credit card that will eventually replace his Green charge card. [cringe #1] As he tells me this on the phone in my super -busy-catch-up-from-vaca work day, my first coherent thought was actually "no <ahem> support link! no love for the DIS folks, doh" [cringe #2] My next thought was quick and easy as he asks me if I have a AmEx cash card yet (No), do you want me to get you a card (i.e. AU) "NO!" [cringe #3]

So to my actual question, he tells me it's one of the Blue Cash cards but he says it's 5% at grocery stores. I'm not aware of a AmEx that does that, I recall 6% for a preferred and 3% for a regular. Does anyone know what the heck it is he might have applied for? Or he is misremembering as I think he is? I suspect he did all this over the phone because he called to see if he could PC his Green to something without a fee, to which the answer is no :(, and I wonder if the rep sold him on applying for the new card instead. [cringe #4, 5, 6? I'm out of cringes at this point]
I don't have any answers for you, but I sympathize with your plight! I have had my own cringeworthy moments with DH recently (however, he knows not to apply for anything without my consent!) I hope he didn't do too much damage to your long term churning plans. :scared:

tempted again...

http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2018/02/01/buy-starpoints-promotion-2018/

haha. anyone else want to pad their spg account?

So tempted! I actually took advantage of the last sale in December. No regrets. Maxing out this deal would about finish the MSR on my SPG Biz and earn me double Starpoints on the purchase!

Just using the rates I pulled for over New Years at the Royal Hawaiian, $727 or 21,250 Starpoints/night, for example, that redemption values each Starpoint at 3.4¢.

Yep, I just got my SPG Bus card, looking to meet MSR! I'd be well on my way to getting those 240,000 Marriott points for the reward stay I booked over Thanksgiving in Costa Rica! (I just love that Marriott doesn't require you to have the points on hand!)

Thanks for the heads up @Albort!

Looks like I may join the party. Still have a little more to go on the spend for Amex SPG Biz, so if purchasing points counts towards MSR (do we know for sure?), I'm inclined to do this just to wrap it up and pad the account (even though I have no use for the points at the moment, but I like the 2x on the purchase and potential for it to count towards MSR :ssst:).

Oh, tell me more about your Costa Rica, it's on our travel list.

I do not believe you get 2x on the purchase. At one time they were giving 2x but when I bought in December and paid with my SPG Amex it coded as Merchandise & Supplies - Internet Purchase (1x). Also, don't forget to go through TopCashBack.com

I finally hit the ceiling for the amount of credit that Chase will extend to me :(. I need to pay a $2600 orthodontist bill and of course I was like - what new card will I get? I applied for the Chase Marriott card because we have a stay coming up in one in April and I want the UR bonus points. I got the 30-day message and they called me the next morning (which surprised me that they would contact me) to verify income and told me that I would need to move around some credit to open the card - which I did - and my new card is in the mail. So the Marriott card will make it a total of 6 Chase cards for me. I think I will lower the limits on my Slate card when I want to get another Chase card (I can't cancel that card because the account is over 24 yrs old).

On a side note - I can't believe how fast the board moves along now! Wow! I have followed this board since it started and I now I get about 15 pages behind if I don't in check in for a few days.

Can we just talk about this new Starbucks credit card for a second?

I love Starbucks as much as the next millennial girl. But MAN, I cannot think of a worse use of 5/24 and credit card rewards!

its terrible imo. $50 AF NOT WAIVED. $500 spend outside of starbucks for 1 free drink. an extra point per dollar spent.
its not worth it imo. i think CSR gives u 3x? for the longest time, i picked up a bunch of 50% off starbucks cards...
ppl on reddit considered this a bad deal... similar to the get the walmart credit card and get a free soda! :P

idk, thats just my 2 cents. rather apply for another card instead.

Oh, tell me more about your Costa Rica, it's on our travel list.

I love Costa Rica, I was there a few years ago and it was fabulous (spent time in the Arenal and Manuel Antonio areas) and it was a very active trip (ziplining, ATV tours, SO FUN). This time we'll just hang out at one place for a week at Hotel Punta Islita in the hills of the Guanacaste area. I like that this property includes activities with your stay (horseback riding, cooking classes, etc.) and it's located on the beach. We'll have to pay for ground transportation and food.

My plan is to gather 360,000 Marriott points for a travel package, transfer 120K miles to Southwest (the Companion Pass is fantastic) and use Southwest to fly to Liberia when the schedule opens. Or use my AAmiles, whichever makes the most sense.

it comes in separate. the 2nd portion comes in as
Bonus +228 - 12/13/2017
SPG AX-SPG&MAR RWRDS SPEND-OPN (Personal = SPG AX-SPG&MAR RWRDS SPEND-CSR)
instead of SPG AX BASE SPEND - OPEN ( Personal = SPG AX BASE SPEND - CONSUMER)

i check it the last time around. i think @Lain asked me about it. its buried somewhere lol.

That's what I remembered too from previously. I recall seeing your post that it came in afterwards and you posted the screenshot, but paging @Lain to confirm if he also got the bonus as a separate line item since he was also another buyer in December.

I have not read any DPs that say buying points does not count towards MSR. My 35k bonus posted in full back in December because I spent $10k even though I returned like $6-7k worth of iPhone Xs. Still hasn’t been clawed back, even though I fully intend to meet the $10k spend before 6 months. I’ve read discussion that Amex may be less strict on partner card bonuses or it may be harder for Amex to enforce or claw back partner currency. I’m not worrying much about points .com not counting towards MSR.

Can confirm that my December points .com purchase appeared as a separate bonus line item in addition to a “base spend” line after my statement closed:

+683 SPG AX-SPG&MAR RWRDS SPEND-OPN JANUARY XX, 2018

We loved CR too. Have been twice. Once a 10 day tour of 5 areas, the second a week at an all inclusive.

Aha! I see that now. Thanks for pointing that out.
