Are we allowed to use the beach on crescent lake?
We own at BWV and went on our first trip this Feb (it was GREAT). We took advantage of pool hopping and went to stormalong bay. I was just daydreaming about all the beauty there and the image of the beach flashed by. I had this thought and just want to know out of curiosity. So as DVC members, are we allowed to use the beach there or for that matter, the one at GF or Poly? Are these beaches part of the resort they are near or are they open to any one staying on WDW property?

I'm not aware of any lakes other the river country that you can swim in at Diz.

Crescent lake is the lake where the Y&BC are along with the Boardwalk. It is the lake that the International gateway at Epcot goes to and the Swan and Dolphin are also on this lake.

I don't think you are allowed to swim at any of the beaches in WDW.

Even though they have beach chairs and a sand beach outside the Beach & YC they do not allow swimming in the lake there.

We stayed a CBR years ago. They have sand beaches with chairs & hammocks, but no swimming.

It wasn't too many years ago that you could go in the water at places like Poly, GF. Now it is prohibited at all the lakes. However, there is no ban to going to the beach itself and there are no rules prohibiting anyone from "beach" hopping.

Why do they not allow people in the water? Appearances, wild animals, pollution?

Curious here.... <IMG SRC="/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif" alt="confused">

I thought the reason given was some kind of bacteria or something in the water. But then, that wouldn't quite seem to hold up, as swimming at River Country is actually in lake water.

Maybe it's because it would be too large an area for the lifeguards to watch properly, raising liability issues. Lake swimming is a totally different issue than swimming pools. Or because boats, water mice etc. are also used in this water and that increases the risk of accidents.

I'm sorry, I should have explained myself better. I didn't mean to swim at these beaches. I just meant to go and lay out on the beach to soak up rays (not me, my wife) while my two DS's build a sand castle. I'll be the guy huddled under the palm tree making sure every bare body part is in the shade.

There have been other threads on this, and I remember many people relaying stories of gators and snakes. Its definitely true that gators sometimes make there way into the common waterways. Disney probably decided it wasn't worth the risk and just banned swimming to protect us guests as well as themselves (from lawsuits).

I have read many posts that warn of walking by the lakes at night and reaching into bushes.

I'm sure the risk is small, but its still a risk.

The ban is due to water pollution/bacteria. Too many boats in too small an area. River Country is not affected because it is actually an enclosed pool walled off from the lake. It just has the appearance of being connected to the lake. Though lake water can potentially intermix, the pool has its own filtering system to maintain pool-like quality of the water.

I can't imangine anybody giving you any hassle about using the beaches. I barely ever see any guests using them. Of course, we don't often go during peak season. During our September trip to the Beach Club, I don't think I saw a single person using the beach.

I thought the reason you couldn't swim in Crescent Lake was the boat traffic.

I'm not sure if the River Country water is treated. I can remember fish swimming in the water there. I also remember seeing a constant flow of water over the barrier from the River Country area back into Bay Lake.

Can you still swim at the Fort Wilderness beach? If I recall, it's out of the way of direct boat traffic.

Isn't there some kind of package where you can go water skiing out in one of the lakes?

You can go on a water skiing trip from the Contemporary. They have a place there to rent that, fishing expeditions, etc..

We asked a cm at the Contemporary about this and he said that there was no swimming in the lake because of some type of bacteria in the water. He said that skiing was fine because the bacteria was more concentrated at the shore line. I don't know about skiing myself because he did say that they have had a few gators in the lake off and on.
