We ( I ;) ) have been planning this trip for two years. The moment we adopted Jillian, I was hard core planning and waiting for the court date to finalize everything. Fast forward 9 months to February 2010, everything is booked and DH and I even invited our 7 year old niece Jordyn to join us. In April we put an offer in on a new house and put ours on the market. The realtor assured me 30 days "tops" and it would be sold.

Skip along to July 31 and our vacation is a mere 18 days away.

Our house is still on the market, the offer expired on the new one, and..... my niece broke her elbow yesterday.

The house stuff is manageable. We may be wheeling and dealing at WDW but the the situation with my niece is not great for anyone. She is in a cast and has to go for more Xrays Tuesday and get a hard cast. The doctor will let her know. She is devastated and thinks we won't take her.

If she gets the all clear, at least she can "wear" her autograph book.:lmao

I told her that many children enjoy WDW in worse situations. She was so looking forward to swimming and throwing her arms up on the roller-coasters.

I suppose it can always be worse. :rolleyes1

There are cast protectors out there that make it possible for her to swim. Just make sure that they speciffically say for swimming. Some are just not made for the amount of water that comes with swimming. They can handle the amount from a shower, but not from swimming.

Here is a link for one type that is safe for swimming.

There are different ones out there just be sure to make sure that it is safe for swimming. You might check a local medical supply store for them also. I had the one that uses a pump to pull the air out of the protector. I would not recommend it. My foot got a bit wet everytime, but maybe I had a faulty one, because I looked at it the other day and the rubber around the valve area was deteriorated. You might have better luck.

A cast protector would also be good to take to the parks with you to protect it against Splash Mountain, Kali River Rapids, afternoon rain showers.

My bosses wife broke 3 bones in her foot 2 weeks before they were supposed to do a holiday trip to Disney with all their 8 grandchildren & 3 children. She was casted up to her knee. But she still went, wheelchair & everything & had a great time, although not the best situation.

My son broke his elbow in April - one week before our trip to Disney. He broke it Saturday night at my brother's place on the trampoline - by the time I got to the hospital - his elbow was so swollen up and he was in complete agony. It was torture for him getting the x-rays done - I wanted to cry for him. Although the doctor was sure the elbow was broken - there was too much fluid so we had to come back on Tuesday (my birthday) and get more x-rays taken - it was still quite swollen but he was able to see the break. The doctor wanted us to come back for more x-rays on Friday to make sure that bone was in place before making a decision if it would be casted or if we had to cancel our Disney trip. On Friday, he said it was a strong break as the bone did not displace so he gave us a sling that wrapped around the arm and around his mid-section. They had done a half-cast to protect the elbow and he did not have to have a full cast. We flew on Saturday - exactly one week after he broke it.

He was such a little trouper wearing his sling with the half cast as it was hot - he never complained once. The only time I worried about his elbow was on the rougher rides but I tried to keep him from hitting anything hard on the ride and jar it. He was fine.

Your niece will still have a good time and hopefully will have a cast that can get wet. It will be fun either way. Good luck.

I feel for you. I wish all of you the best.

We went this past January. We were leaving on a Wednesday. The Thursday before we left my DD was at my mother's and sliced off the top part of her thumb with an apple wedger. That thing was sharp!!! Not only did the tip go (luckily just the skin part no bone); but also down the side of her thumb too. Let's just say it was very nasty looking.

She received stitches for the side and we were told that the top just had to heal over on it's own. Just before we went on the road, we went to the doctors and had the stitches removed and then left to drive down.

We had to re-bandage every 3rd day but we made it through ok. She kept a small plastic bag with her at all times.

We had forgotten (but she didn't) that there is a brief shower in the Little Mermaid show in DHS and other places you would not have thought about it. Just be aware and maybe bring some sort of plastic covering where ever you go for times like that when you are on the rides.

Once again, best of luck with all your en-devours and your upcoming Disney trip.:flower3:

Sorry to hear about your hard time. Good luck with the sell of your house. My friends daughter broke her elbow at cheerleading at the beginning of the summer and she got a water proof cast put on. But she did have to pay part of it. So maybe they can ask about that. Have a great time and good luck.

We are at WDW and I have never seen so many people with casts on before. She will blend right in (unfortuantely);)

Make sure to have her ask the doctor about getting a fiberglass cast with a waterproof liner. She can go swimming with it on. I think most childrens hospitals have them now, but you have to ask for it.

She is in a soft cast until next Tuesday. I mentioned getting a waterproof cast to her Mom and he mom was going to insist on it. My niece has been looking forward to going and we want her and our daughter to enjoy as much as possible.

Should we anticipate alot of hassle from Cast Members at rides because of the cast?

Thanks!

We did not experience any hassle at all from any CM's in April with my son - I thought we might get asked to not go on some of the wilder rides like BTMRR or Splash (one morning - it was a walk on for the first hour so we rode BTMRR 3x and Splash 2x) but not one word was said to us - I think that they leave it up to the discretion of the parents. I am sure that she will be just fine.

Have a wonderful trip! :yay:

That is really cool! Thanks for posting.... I will put it in my "book of solutions"

hope your niece has a fantastic trip; even with her cast on. :) I've seen kids and adults with various casts on at WDW she should be OK; just maybe have your sister ask the Dr about any possible medication *in case* she does have any residual pain so she won't have to deal with that while on vacation.

Just wanted to say Congratulations on the Adoption. How marvelous. And...being able to take your niece is just such a sweet thing! There is still so much she's going to be able to do. It could be worse. She could have a cast on her leg. Even then; she could have used a wheelchair. Go and make wonderful memories. Everything WILL work out. :goodvibes
