9:22! Yowsa - I didn't know I had it in me.

:worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship:

HUGE congrats to you, my friend. :woohoo: I know that is something you were striving for, and you totally rocked it! And just one short week after running two races back-to-back. :thumbsup2 You're the race queen!

Oh, Kim. Thanks for noticing. :eeyore: And thanks for believing I had it in me, too. I don't know where my limits are anymore. :goodvibes

I seriously can't believe the timing of it. Seriously. The weather makes such a huge difference, too. Today was a PERFECT day, to my mind. Here's the recap - I posted it to the race reports thread, too.

This morning, I ran the New Prague 5K - it's associated with a 1/2 marathon that is fairly popular locally, though it still didn't strike me as a terribly huge race. Truly, I'm still kind of exhausted from the 5K and 15K last weekend and it has been one of those go-go-go weeks, so I wasn't sure there was any sense in driving the 45 minutes each way to get there, especially since it was going to potentially make my husband late for a rehearsal.

Even so, last night, I dutifully prepared my race clothes and shoes and set the alarm clock. Sure enough, I didn't have any trouble getting up this morning, but still felt kind of like there wasn't much point in going down for the race. Well, I got ready and drove on down anyway. And was I ever glad that I did.

The weather was perfect this morning - about 57 degrees, overcast, a slight breeze, and zero precipitation. I can't imagine more perfect conditions. I put on my number and chip and kept on fiddling with my shoes. I just couldn't seem to get them right. I must have retied my shoes 3 or 4 times each this morning. Finally, both shoes seemed OK and a good thing cause it was time to start.

It has, since last fall, been my goal to run a 5K in under 30 minutes. My first 5K was a year ago this week and I ran it in something like 38 minutes. I had managed 31:16 in March. It seemed unlikely, tired as I was, that this would be my day, but I was darned sure going to try for it. The first mile, I thought I was right on track. Then there was a big hill - I hung in there and climbed it at something right around an 11 mile pace. Around this time, I noticed a little girl running - maybe about 6 years old. She was going along great and I ran with her and her dad for a while. We turned a corner and the dad said to her that that was the worst of it and it was all downhill from there. There was a water stop with very enthusiastic volunteers, but I have to say it was the worst ever cause the water tasted like rust. I've been spoiled by that yummy Disney water, evidently. At this point, I start slowly passing people - unbelievable to me that I'm able to do that, that I am able to keep up this good pace. Before I know it, we're approaching the park where we started and I thought we must be finishing at the same spot the half-marathoners would be finishing up a little later. My Garmin (which I'd started late) gave me reason to believe that I had a shot at making the sub-30 happen TODAY, so I pushed. And I felt nauseated, but pushed on some more. And then I could see the finish line clock, and I thought, once again, I still have time to get this if I want it bad enough. Can you believe I actually snapped a photo of the finish clock? It said 29:40. I ran under and the last I saw was 29:45 and knew even without getting my chip time that I'd done it. I felt thrilled and ill at the same time as someone cut off my chip, but took a bottle of water and kept walking. The refreshments were sliced oranges, bananas and....ice cream supplied by the national dairy council, evidently. At 9am! My chip time was 29:40 and the average pace had been 9:22, which is SO much faster than my "happy pace." So I got my sub-30 and when I was least expecting it!

There's a pasta dinner at MOA tonight for the RFTC, but I am going to finish that Minnie report TONIGHT. And then tomorrow, I'll write something about how my legs were about to fall off in a crowd of 20,000, but my 9 year old son kept me going (cause did I mention he's running with me tomorrow?).

All right, before I trailed off and then veered away from the 15K, it seems we had just started running the 15K. My chapter breaks could come at better places, I tell you.

So it took at least a mile to get out of the AK parking lot. There then followed a bunch of running and blurry picutures. Here's one of what I can only assume is the 2 mile marker.

P5040387.jpg

It was at about this time that I dropped my camera. And someone behind me picked it up and handed it to me. I hadn't zipped the little case I had it in on my water belt. Fortunately, no one tripped over her and also fortunately, the camera is supposed to be waterproof and shockproof. If only it took better photos....

We crossed this overpass - and I believe it was a bit of a climb to get up there - and we could see the DHS gates and the Dolphin in the background. It was the first actual scenery we'd witnessed, so of course I wanted to take a smeary picture. :) Has anyone else read those Series of Unfortunate Events books in which the author keeps trying to talk you out of reading the books? I keep thinking that the walkers always take such better pictures than I do and I should just leave the race photography to them, but then I enjoy my blurry pictures so much and can't seem to lay off. SO, if you would like to read a race report with excellent photographs, I suggest you look elsewhere. But if you like photos taken at between 5 and 6 mph, why then keep on reading.

I got passed by two WISHers - Chester first with his green fur race number holding belt. He gently said "Go WISH" as he breezed past me. The there was Patrick (Tiggerspal222) a little later. I said something friendly to him, possibly commenting on his speed as he passed me. He said that I'd catch him when he burned out around mile 8. I won't keep you in suspense - it never happened. I saw him again between the chip removal and the photography at the end of the race.

OK, I thought this was where the race started to get really fun. In general, I am not a huge fan of the out-and-back style of race course, and at mile whatever it is of the Marathon, I imagine this little switchback section really bites. But in the Minnie, it is super fun, because all of a sudden, here come all the fast runners on the other side of the median. And some of them are WISH people. And some of them wave to you, and that's pretty cool.

P5040390.jpg

I did see Chester and Patrick again as they were going the other way. They both waved. And after I got past the turn around, I waved to just about everyone I saw, including Jen and Mel, Stacie and her husband and Jeanne and Nancy. It was so much fun to see people going the other way and it really gave me a lift to greet people on the other side. I always like waving and thanking the volunteers on a race course - it really adds to my enjoyment of a race somehow, but this was even better than that.

Here we are a little further down the road
P5040392.jpg

And suddenly we were running in the back gate into DHS at the bottom of the Tower of Terror! Woo hoo hootie hoo - I haven't been back here since October!

P5040393.jpg

P5040394.jpg

ANd at this point, we started seeing the paid spectators - i.e. employees who were there probably to keep us from leaving the course but who also kind of waved and cheered to varying degrees as we went by.

Among the backstage areas, there was this Animation building.
P5040395.jpg

And here we are approaching the smeary backlot tunnel.

At this point, there were a bunch of little octagonal mats and I think I was similarly confused at the ToT cause I thought maybe they were chip mats and you can actually run between them. Well, no. They aren't. There weren't any cheater mats on this course at all, as far as I could tell.

P5040396.jpg

So, through the tunnel -

P5040397.jpg

And Mile 6! How did that happen?
P5040398.jpg

The streets of America - at this point, we started wooping and hollering with excitement for some reason.
P5040399.jpg

And when I say "we" I mean the random group of runners I happened to be with at that moment. There was a great running song playing, but I don't have any idea what it was and will probably never know. I tried to listen to a phrase. Thought it sounded like maybe Ashley Tisdale. That's all I've got and it is pretty hopeless.

OK, and I didn't really NEED this photo, but then I saw the HAT.

P5040400.jpg

The Queen of Hearts and Cruella DeVille were coming out at that point -

P5040401.jpg

I didn't get a picture with them cause I was in too much of a hurry, apparently, and they weren't in place yet, but I did manage to get a shot with these two:

P5040402.jpg

Then out the front gate
P5040403.jpg

Now it's time for the silent photomontage of the walking path from DHS to Epcot. I'm turning down the lights. Enjoy.

Finishing up with the Beach Club, Wishers AND another bridge-hill.

Next.....will she EVER get to Epcot?

Great pictures on your RR, even the blurry ones. I like to think of you as a whirlwind in motion! :thumbsup2 How on earth do you ever remember all the race details--I can't even remember my name after a run.

Looking forward to reading more....:surfweb:

Debra - thanks for the gentle nudge....did she ever get to Epcot? The answer is YES - definitively, and I have the photos to prove it! And to jog my memory - that's my secret. I wouldn't remember all this if I didn't have the photos to remind me, which is why I run with a camera, I guess. :)

One thing I didn't photograph and therefore didn't put in at the appropriate places earlier were the water stops. And the medical stop. Well, the first wan was a water stop and was that water GOOD. I don't remember if it was the 2nd or 3rd stop when they started having Powerade, but I do remember at one point, Powerade sounded really good. I almost took one. Ohhhh, the lemony high fructose goodness. Fortunately, good sense prevailed and I passed it up, recalling that if you don't train with it, you shouldn't take it. I stuck to my sports beans and plain water and the propel that I had in my own personal water bottle, and never had a stomach problem at all. Whew!

At the medical stop, (wherever that was - by the side of the road between the turn around and DHS, maybe?) they were handing out biofreeze. Now I haven't traditionally been that into the biofreeze, but biofreeze had made my feet feel SO good overnight and for about 5 seconds, I considered stopping and getting some, but realized I'd have to completely take off my shoes and socks to put that stuff where I was wanting it. My blisters on my pinkie toes were not TOO bothersome, but I was definitely feeling them more as the race went on.

Now, on to Epcot:

If you've never entered Epcot through the International Gateway, that's OK, but you seriously HAVE to go through the back-door entrance to the world showcase sometime. At first, I foolishly thought that we were going in through Morocco. I think I must have been delusional. Check out the mural on that little building on the right there - I think it was Winnie The Pooh themed. I wish I had gotten a better photo, I can tell you.

P5040410.jpg

Anyhow, we emerged here!

P5040411.jpg

And before I knew it, we were at:

P5040412.jpg

This is my last world showcase photo
P5040413.jpg

It was taken after, I believe, I called my dear husband and said "You'll never believe this - I'm in Morocco! - where are you?" And he told me, bless his heart, that they were at the finish already. I had had some concerns about how he was going to get himself and the two boys out of the room and to the front of Epcot in time for my big finish, given that busses likely weren't starting that early. They had ultimately decided it was easiest and fastest to take a cab. I said I'd be there in about 10 minutes. :hourglass I don't know how accurate my time estimate was, but they didn't complain that I'd taken too long, anyhow.

It's exciting to see Spaceship Earth once again:

P5040414.jpg

Then there was this wacky DJ guy who was rocking out to whatever song was playing with literally, an air guitar.

P5040415.jpg

It was inflatable. And he was hilarious. Just what I needed at that moment and I gave him a big thumb's up and thank you. Have I mentioned that what I do on these races to keep my attitude good is to try to thank as many of the volunteers and police officers and medics and in this case, cast members as I possibly can? It keeps me from focusing on the discomfort and distance and time and helps me remember how grateful I am to be able to participate in the event, how lucky and proud I am to have the endurance to get through it. Because a year and a half ago, the idea of running a 15K or even a 5K....well, it sounded nearly impossible. And now I can do it. So I thank the volunteers and it keeps things positive. I also appreciate how many people it takes for an event like this and that it wouldn't happen without them. I just hope it's not too annoying to the volunteers - can you imagine - every other person "Thank you! Thanks! Thanks a lot!" A person could get tired of it. But I don't think they get that many of them, so it's probably OK.

Approaching Mile 9 - and check out that gigantic column! Is that for the monorail? Spaceship Earth? Is this a trivia contest here?
P5040416.jpg

I wish I'd gotten a picture of them, but I was past them before I realized and wanted to finish quick. My family was outside the Epcot gate right at the start of the finish chute. My older son was holding the sign I'd made at the Expo

DSCF0317-1.jpg

and and all 3 of them waved and cheered. And DH took what must be a very unflattering photo of me. That's how I remember it, anyhow. But this is what he actually got!

DSCF0318.jpg

As Crush would say "Duuude....there's the finish line!"

P5040418.jpg

And suddenly it was over. And in under 2 hours! :woohoo: I had been planning to take it easy since I was feeling ill-prepared for the distance and had run the day before, and finished about 10 minutes ahead of what I had estimated I'd do.

I let them cut the chip right off of my foot, was given a Minnie Medal and sent on my way. At this point, I saw Patrick again and pointed out that I never had caught him. And he said that he wished they'd stop herding people out as he was waiting for a slower friend so they could get a photo together. My family had made their way around the back of the chutes and kind of lingered and followed me on the outside as I cooled down, talked to Stacy and her family who were there cheering for Stacy's sister, got photos taken that I now can't find on ASI, and ultimately got my crummy little blueberry bread, banana, orange slices, powerade and bottle of water. Since ToT, it has been my rule that I eat what I'm given after a race - I didn't that night and ended up having internal thermostat issues later in the evening, possibly from low electrolytes/dehydration.

I told my family that they HAD to see the heelies stunt kids show and went and stood with Scott and Amy and cheered on the rest of the race. I chatted more than I photographed, but I did get one of Stacie and Matt:

P5040419.jpg

Next it was the Kid's Races. I had signed my boys up because at $5 each, it seemed like the biggest bargain in all of WDW. My boys both ran hard and were glad to get their medals.

Next we made our way into Epcot. I had brought a change of clothes and the plan had been to do a little Future World and then go on to our princess breakfast. The timing worked out such that what we had time for was walking very slowly into the park, and sending the boys to get Soarin' fastpasses while I moved slowly to the Test Track area restrooms to change into my clean clothes. Not optimal - a shower would have been better, but I'd brought a bunch of baby wipes and cleaned up pretty well. Unfortunately at this point in the weekend, the only clean shirt I had was the huge Owner's Locker shirt, and I felt like I was wearing a bit of a tent. I also put on lots of fresh deodorant. Like I said, not optimal, but workable.

I could not believe how slowly I was moving - I walked towards the Odyssey place and saw my boys walking over the bridge to Mexico. They were going to leave me in the dust, so I hollered and they waited for me. And as we approached Norway, who should we see but Mary Poppins! I do love Mary, and we had to get her autograph in my son's book...even though he is apparetly not a fan and refused to go near her. I thought she was wonderful. She remarked on my medal and said that when she has to go that far, she uses her umbrella and next time perhaps she'd lend it to me.

P5040434.jpg

We then slowly made our way over towards Akerhaus and an Epcot Security guy tells us that everything is closed here. It's just the check in for the Princess breakfast. And I said that that was where we were going and was that OK? And he said that sure that was OK, but he didn't notice any princesses with us. :sad2: I told him that we were princess FANS. Which is not even that true - we are actually breakfast fans.

Unfortunately Ariel wasn't there that morning. DS4 is in love with Ariel, but hides from all the other princesses. He did come out to meet Mulan - not actually a princess. Jasmine tried really hard, too, but he just was not into meeting the ladies that day. Unless they were able to defeat the Huns and knew Kung Fu, evidently.

The rest of the day, I sort of barely remember. I think I needed the restroom and the one at the princess place was overcrowded and full of so much glitter, I headed for the one on the other side of the bakery, and DH took the kids on Maelstrom and then I took them on it again while DH went to get Test Track fastpasses for later. We met up in front of the Mexico pavilion and rode the new Grand Fiesta ride. Then we hauled ourselves slowly, slowly over to Soarin' where I wished we didn't have to stand so long in those holding pens. I had opted, obviously, not to rent an ECV that day - not having to run the next day, I was beyond caring about preserving my feet, I guess. Anyhow, that was the only point at which I thought "Oh, for an ECV to sit on." After that, we left and rather than wait for a bus, we just jumped into a cab back to OKW, where I showered and had a hearty nap. Oh, and DH did all the weekend's laundry. I do greatly appreciate that man. He later said he appreciated being able to enjoy a couple of cool Yeunglings in peace at the Gurgling Suitcase. :thumbsup2

Later that night, we made our way back to Epcot for our reservations at Rose & Crown. This is DH's favorite (or maybe second fave behind Boma) and since this was a do-over trip for him as much as it was a race my buns off trip for me, we had to go to R&C. Having passed on the boozy drinks all weekend, I felt it was high time, and ordered a Welsh Dragon because it is made with Peach Schnapps, my favorite. It was kind of weird because it also had melon liquer, creme de menthe, orange juice and pineapple juice. I think the mint made it weird. But the more I drank, the more I liked it.

P5040444.jpg

And the less I felt competent to do things like cut up my DS's pizza or take him to the restroom or anything. My feet felt great, though! Seriously, even after the drink had mostly worn off, my feet felt good! So I'm thinking a post-race Welsh Dragon could become a tradition I could get used to. :thumbsup2

We finished out the night with a ride on Test Track and then there was the Illuminations or Mission Space debate......think fast! Ultimately, Mission Space won out, if you can believe it. Only half of us rode it, but it's another of DH's favorites, and I was just as glad to sit at the end. We left with the big crowd after illuminations, didn't have to wait too long for a bus and got back to OKW to put the kids to bed and start packing for home. What a weekend!

Corinna, great report and pics!!! I really wish i took more pics, but i didn't even bring my camera (it's too big and bulky) to the race - However, i may just have to get dd her first digi camera in time to borrow it for next year's princess 1/2.. LOL

Have a good night!! :)

Hey girlie. :goodvibes GREAT trippie! :thumbsup2 You know me and pictures. I just love them! Thank you so much for your awesome memory skills and for sharing your view. That 15k looks really cool. It's a shame they're not doing it anymore. :guilty:

I really hope we can meet up again some time. Maybe you could come to the beautiful Jersey shore for a vacation? :rolleyes1

Hi Corinna!!!! Great job on your races! You rocked both of them!!!

It's so great your kids did the races! I thought the kids races were sooo cute!!!! I don't understand the heely's ones though. They just seem dangerous to me. Maybe it's just me though. :confused3 My nephew has heely's and seems do pretty well on them.

I really like your TR! Its fun re-living it. I hope I was fiendly to you at the races. Sounds funny...I know. It's just from what I remember, my head seemed to be cloudy and my thoughts were everywhere for the 5K being my sister, BIL, and parent's first races...trying to make sure they were ok and meeting Wishers and then the nervousness of the 15K! My mom even mentioned that after the 15K I seemed a bit out of it and not even that excited that I had done it. My focus was to get to the Medic tent and get ice for the back of my knee... I tend to get all emotional before the race instead of after. Looking back, I hope I wasn't short or anything...

How cool that you got the picture of Matt and I!

I guess we'll see you again in January! This time I'll try to be more focused! :goodvibes I tend to get a bit overwhelmed at the races...

Anyway...Great job on your races and CONGRATS on your 5K PR!!! That is so great! I don't think I will ever be that fast and I guess that's ok. I would like to be fast enough that in Janu for the 1/2 I can take pics w/ characters on the course if they are out.

Take care of yourself...Oh, and what is that ice stuff they were giving out at the medic tent? Maybe I needed that for my knee.

Stacie

Oh...One other thing... Matt's legs were hurting him so much from NOT TRAINING and his feet had blisters too so instead of walking from the Entrance/Exit of Epcot to the bus...My mom pushed him in a wheel chair! I couldn't believe it. So, Don't feel bad about the ECV! :goodvibes

Stacie

Stacy - Yes, definitely consider a small, sturdy digital for races - it's so nice to be able to look back and remember. I just wish mine had picture stabilization. :lmao:

Kim - I agree it is a real shame they aren't doing this one anymore. I thought it was a nice course and at a good time of year as well. Evidently, half-marathons are cooler than Minnie marathons. Well, at least it will be less confusing. Are you thinking more about that princess 1/2 since it's around the same time you'd be going anyhow? We've been talking about it some more at my house. :)

Stacy - The Heelies seem dangerous to me, too. My kids have a hard enough time not crashing into things when they're walking, so they have crocs, not Heelies. ;)

I must admit, at first I thought maybe you didn't recognize me or remember me in particular (some people have a LOT of WISH friends to keep track of, I know) or maybe I was too weird or just not what you were expecting - lime green is really NOT my color, you know. It sounds like you were feeling pretty nervous and overwhelmed, which I can completely understand. I was surprised to be so calm before these races, as compared with before Tower of Terror, when I was a complete basket case beforehand. I may be back to basket-case at the January half marathon, I guess, but I'll try to get to the meet next time so we can say "hi" at a less tense time. :)

Actually, I got two pictures of you guys, but I didn't want to seem stalkerish in my TR....you want me to email the other one to you?

As for my 5K PR and being "that fast" - you never know what you might be able to do. The sub-30 was my "impossible dream", you know. I am looking forward to the characters in the 1/2 as well - people keep talking about how much better the January races are. Time will tell, right? Is Matt going to do the half this year as well?

Thanks for letting me know about Matt's wheelchair ride. I have to confess, the wheelchairs looked pretty good to me on Sunday afternoon as well.

The ice-stuff - you mean the Biofreeze? Kind of blue gel stuff? Or did they have something that was cold like ice? I never made it into the medic tent....

So as of today, I have walked the dog a couple of times and donated blood, and that's about it.

Actually the invalid dog and I walked 3 miles today. It took about an hour. I had been hoping to run a Kim, but timing-wise, it wasn't in the cards. I feel tired anyhow. :guilty:

Looking at my little clippies, I'm realizing that there's only one on there that I haven't run already. :sad2:

I am considering the Princess 1/2 for next March, but it seems like it's SO on the heels of the regular old 1/2, I just don't know.

Yes, my friends. I am now in the post-race slump zone. It will pass. I need to work out with DH how exactly I'm going to get a long run in at all in the upcoming crazy weekends.

I am so sorry Corinna. I promise to try not to be foggy and cloudy-headed in January! Thanks for understanding. It's kinda a like a surreal thing, out of body experience. It will just be Matt and myself for the half so no worrying about the family and all. We definately need to say HI in January!

Yeahh...The Biofreeze! I wish I had know about that stuff. I could have grabbed some for the back of my knee. That was the only place that was really bothering me. Hmmm, mental note for January...

I'm with you on the thanking and cheering for the volunteers. It actually makes ME feel better and seems to give me a little more energy! :thumbsup2 I hope I didn't irritate the other racers. Not many people would say thanks or anything. I'm sure they were just so zoned in on racing itself.

My camera did pretty good. Not sure what model you have--mine is the 850 I think. It's blue. There were definately some blurry pics though! Most all of my still-shots came out great in the parks and stuff though. What setting did you have yours on. I kept mine on auto...Dummy...I should have put it on SPORTS. Ugh. Why didn't I think of that! Don't know if it would have made much of a difference though.

I've done no working out since the Minnie. Hey, at least you are walking your dog! I'm still trying to figure out what my schedule will be. I'll start fresh on Monday.

I hope you are able to work out your schedule to get in your long runs!!!

On a side note... I don't understand either why they are taking the Minnie out, replacing it, but in March? I would think May would still be a nice time of year for it. I thought the weather was pretty good this year.

Ok...enough rambling from me.

Hope you have a great weekend!!!
Stacie

Corinna, I'm in a major post-race slump myself. Not even sure what/when/where my next race will be. HATE THAT. I was so geared up for DL but that isn't in the cards *sigh*...just too tough to work it out.

Anyway, we need to find us some races girl ;). I need to get back into my training groove too!

Hey C! What's goin on? Because, you know...we haven't talked in a while. ;)

I must say after reading a lot of these posts and the race report, I am totally motivated to see what I can do about making myself more athletic. It seems like I can do anything in the gym but getting out on the pavement is totally different. I have a 5k that I want to do in August that will be my first real race. My biggest draw back is that I had my knee scoped last year and running is still very uncomfortable. And running any kind of distance is not even plausible right now. I have been reading a lot about Windwalker and I can't figure out how he can "walk" a 12 minutes mile. I went to the track tonight with my daughter and the best I could do is a 16 minute mile. (It stinks that I can stay on a bike for hours but walking a couple of miles about kills me.)

Besides the obvious of changing my workout routine and doing a lot more treadmill or track time, does anyone have any ideas that can help me get back to being able to at least jog decent distances again?

Thanks!
Bryan

Stacie - blurry photos are def. an issue, but it sounds like maybe the new model is an improvement. And yeah, I hope I'm not an irritation to other racers as well, and I wonder if it means I'm not working "hard enough" if I have energy and focus for saying thanks. However, "hard enough" is relative, and if we're out there to have fun, I say we're not more obnoxious than, say, someone singing "99 bottles of beer on the wall" to pass the time.

Amy- that is too bad that DL isn't in the cards - I would like to do that race sometime, too. Hey, are you in for the Princess 1/2 at all? I'm still trying to make up my mind. I know I have a 10 mile in July, though it's a small-town race and registration isn't up yet. I'm not actually sure how the training for that is going to go, given that the kids are shortly going to be out of school and the dog is still not able to run. I could do the 3 mile again instead, but it doesn't have the same draw this year for some reason. There's also a charity 1/2 marathon here the first weekend in June with an associated 5K. I am thinking I should shoot for that and run it more for fun - like low 30's rather than a PR. It's not that inspiring, but maybe if I register for it, I'll be motivated to get back in the saddle, so to speak.

Kim-Hmmm. Let's see. I have been walking the invalid dog and shuffling kids from place to place. I am going to test for - egads - first purple in Kung Fu next week. And planning travel, madly. Still kind of "recovering" from my intensive May race schedule, which translates to not really doing much at all. Still walking a mile or two a day isn't BAD exactly, it's just not really "training" to my mind.

Bryan - Thanks for stopping by my journal :thumbsup2 I'm glad you enjoyed the race report. It was quite a weekend! It sounds like running might be kind of hard on your already troubled knees. There's nothing wrong with biking or walking - I am becoming more and more convinced all the time that running is for the crazy.

Having said that, I know the way a bunch of us started out from basically nothing was with the C25K program. The nice thing about C25K is that you don't have to run more than 60 seconds when you start, and there is a podcast that tells you when to go faster and when to slow down.

I don't have a lot of experience with racewalking like Windwalker does (is that guy a machine or what??) but I know that the technique makes a lot of difference, and the training, too, of course. I don't like to walk faster than about 16mpm, which is why I started jogging. :) It makes sense to me that walking is harder than biking for you if you have been doing a bunch of biking lately - different muscles, different motion. I guess the main thing I've learned is that it's a good idea to build a little at a time and not to worry too much about speed at first, if at all. :)

I'm so tardy in catching up on your journal. I attribute it to my own pre-taper anxieties and post-race catching up. But I wanted to let you know that I love all the details you put into your RR/TR combo.

Just a couple of comments:

1) I think you may have convinced me to carry a camera on my races. I'm slow enough that time doesn't matter. And I'm old enough that I need all the help my memory can get. (Do you think I could buy a memory card for my brain?)

2) You called your DH while on the course? Too funny. I can't even remember to carry my phone. (See, I'm old!)

3) I too, thank volunteers on the course. You know this smilie? :worship: I do a version of that on the course, as I'm yelling (or huffing) thank you.

4) I'm definitely imbibing in a Welsh Dragon. Sounds like a miracle drink, and much better than Powerade!

I'm sorry to hear you're in a post-race slump. It sounds like you have some good options for various races but none of them are particularly exciting you? So maybe doing one for fun is the way to go. One of the things I think I *may* like about races is when I get to travel to a new or much-loved place. Maybe it's similar for you? (So I'm kind of down right now, as we're cutting our race and travel budget this summer.)

Bryan: I think Corrina's observations about C25K are great. Also, there are a lot of us who are using R/W or W/R intervals for the races. If that helps your knees, I say try that strategy. Your XT will help you get stronger, while doing a R/W program will help you adjust to running muscles. Like you both, I'm in awe of Dave (and Tracy and Jen), but it's just easier for me to run slowly than to concentrate on the racewalking form; apparently I don't have enough concentration to move and think about how I move! :rotfl:

Hi Corinna! Just checking in on you. I've still not done a thing since Minnie. At least you are walking a mile or 2 per day! :thumbsup2

Hope all is well!!! Have a great weekend!
Stacie

Hey guys - so yesterday, I ran 2 miles (AKA "a Kim") and it was OK. I have not lost everything, by any means, thank goodness. I also have walked the dog 2 miles several days this week. Three, I want to say. I am keeping poor track, unfortunately. But we have a loop that we do, and he's gotten so much better about walking nicely on the leash while we are "on patrol." Not sure how much of that is having a broken toe and how much is, you know, maturity and training. Whatever it is, I love it.

Oh, and I have discovered that the dog is a lot less crazy if I don't lock him in the bathroom with an e-collar on (to keep him from chewing his bandage) while we go places. I know - it figures, doesn't it? He is a much more stable dog when he can ride along with us. The crate is not the same sort of thing for some reason, just the bathroom e-collar situation. Maybe because we put the TV on and give him something to chew when he's in the crate. Which he can't be in with the e-collar, so it's tough. In theory, we only have 2 more weeks of this. If it's healed enough. Which concerns me because I was warned to keep him relatively quiet while it was healing. And with an 11 month old lab mix, well, it's tough. I maybe shouldn't be walking him as much as I do, but if I don't, he's crazier and more likely to tear around and leap off things, so it's like a lesser of 2 evils thing. Seriously, I'm muddling along. Two more weeks.

The calendar is crammed during May - it always is, but DH being in a show has really chewed up the calendar and spit it out again. It's quite a time commitment that translates to solo parenting and dog-responsibility for me a lot of the time lately. Which is exhausting, I must say.

I'm not sure what else to say - I feel good to be sort of ramping back up a little again, but feel a little aimless without a training plan selected for the 10 mile. It's probably past time I should have chosen one, too, come to think of it.

Debra - don't apologize for not keeping up with my journal, please! I am not caught up with my journal half the time! And am the worst about keeping up with the journals of others. :guilty: Are you doing the Goofy again this year? I think I am going to have to take off too early on Sunday to see the whole marathon, BUT I would totally buy you a Welch Dragon after the half -(It's a tonic for your feet!) And WOW - you have energy to do the "worship" smilie on the race course? I feel like I'm doing pretty good to holler out "Thanks!" and maybe wave a little. I'm impressed. :worship:

I think I am a BORG runner - gotta have the phone and the Forerunner and the self-owned chip AND the camera. It's actually a wonder I can run at all, isn't it? Not a minimalist over here, evidently. You should try running with the camera sometime - not sure how it would be on a really LONG run. I do have a camera pouch on my water belt. OK, I'm a big geek!

Oh, and glad I'm not the only one who has a harder time walking fast than running slow!

Stacie - thanks for checking up on me. It sounds like we've got a "slow recovery" club going on here. I don't know whether to credit the dog with my regular walks or to blame the dog and his broken toe for my inability to get out for a run lately.

Enjoy the LOOOONG weekend, everyone!
