Does anyone know how to get it out of my clothes? Of course I had on a brand new pair of very expensive shorts. (I kid you not, I probably only had them on for an hour or so before this happened!)

I ran to the washer, threw in the clothes then ran for the shower. I can smell the gas emanating from the washer (stupid move, noticed the washer says right on the lid not to put flammable items in it) and I still smell like gas a wee bit but can hardly tell since the whole house smells now. (how to get it off my skin? I worry it's still there although I showered thoroughly)

I am so stupid. I can't believe this happened. I just opened the door of my friends truck to put some cookies in there before he left, and the gas can fell out on me. (not his fault, mine, it was for his chain saw) I was drenched.

I guess this wouldn't be a good time to take up smoking, LOL.

probably not! Good luck!

Or call the local fire department (non-emergency number.) They would know how to handle flamable liquids.

Well first off - I would definitely NOT put your clothes in the dryer. When they come out of the washer - I would run the washer empty with plenty of soap and an extra rinse cycle to make sure it's rinsed out completely. Air dry the clothes and give them a sniff test to see if they smell clean. If they still smell off - I would wash them outside with the hose, a bucket and some DISH soap like dawn... (That will help with any greasy residue if any)

For yourself - just shower and soap up as much as possible. You can even use a bit of Dawn if you want :)

I did that once. I actually managed to spill on myself at the gas station. (New Jersey is all full-service ... I didn't have much practice. Whoops)

Did you try baking soda?

Sorry that I don't have any advice but I have to say after reading your post, the little guy in your signature freaked me out just a little bit. :scared: (just kidding!)

I found these tips for you:

Can gasoline and gasoline odor be removed from jeans?

Pretreat. Wash using heavy-duty detergent with hot water.

Stain-removal pretreatment products help remove oil-based stains such as this. If stain removal pretreatment products are unavailable, apply heavy-duty liquid detergent, or powdered detergent mixed with water to make a runny paste, to the stain. Work the detergent into the stain. Caution: Gasoline makes clothing more flammable then normal. Use detergent-based stain removers, not solvent-based ones. Air clothing thoroughly; do not place a garment in a dryer if you can still smell gas.

After pretreatment, wash the garment in hot water (if safe for the fabric) using the recommended amount of detergent for a regular laundry load. Rinse and inspect before drying. Repeat this treatment if removal is incomplete.

I think I remember that little incident, Dana......:rolleyes1

:lmao:

To the OP: did you try a google?

yes, but I posted here too, because I knew someone would have first hand advice!

Thanks everyone, I tried baby oil in one wash, lots of baking soda (washing soda) vinegar in the rinse...several cycles....and a really long shower for me!

Right now the clothes are drying on the line outside and I put a box of baking soda in the washer to absorb the gas scent for the rest of the night. Tomorrow I plan to do a couple cycles of vinegar, etc again to really clear out the washer before I put anything else in it. Ugh, I am really worried that the machine will make my next loads smell too.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice everyone, the links were good too.

Do you think the guy that works at the gas station goes thru this every night after work?

Use dawn dish washing detergent. It is a little harsh for clothes but it will get the oil/gas out. Second hang out side for a day or two. I used to do this all the time on the farm when I was a kid.
