I just saw the most amazing thing

we have a senior female in our school who is blind, and this year the county/school has allowed her to bring her seeing eye dog to school to prepare for going to college. Well I just saw her in the halls( I see her almost evry day) but today she was without a her friend that helps her. I saw the dog lead her towards the phone and wanted to help her but was afraid to approach. It didnt matter the dog steered her from hams way and she made it down the hall. The dog is a very cute looking Black Lab which both my mom and sister own as pets.

Watching her get along maked me feel like I can do anything

no this the first year she ahs the dog, it was still a puppy in September

That is so neat! I would love to train seeing eye dogs! I think that would be so cool!

My SO has an aunt that is blind. Her oldest son is deaf. It is amazing to me how she can "see" him and he can "hear" her when they can't see or hear the rest of the world. She's been trying to teach my kids how to read braille. Neither one understands it, but they think it's very interesting to see her read and write "those dots".

Why didn't the school let her bring the dog before now?

I think she just got the dog.....probably to help her be more independent at college. I'm guessing she and the dog are getting used to each other at this point. Labs make excellent guide dogs.

Antee we have a guy who can’t see in our building. He gets around just fine with his seeing eye dog. Every few months he sends out an email to the 3000 employees in the building. The email reminds everyone that yes the dog is cute, but please do not touch / pet the dog. I think he says that he doesn’t want the dog to become too familiar with other people because it would then go over to them while he was walking.

This is by no means meant to be funny in any way. We had a sight impaired guy who used a cane to get around a few years ago. Well our cafeteria has a big pull down gate over the entrance. One day the cafeteria closed early,the staff didn’t pull the door all the way down. The guy walked up to it, his tapping cane didn’t hit anything on the bottom so he kept going and hit his head on the partially pulled down gate. I think he got cut pretty bad.

My friends with guide dogs aren't big fans of people engaging their dogs while 'on the job'.

Our kids take private piano lessons at our local Suzuki school. Their piano teacher is blind and uses a Seeing Eye dog.

This amazing lady is totally independent. She lives by herself in an apartment, plays for her church, and has never missed a lesson for our kids in the 6 years we have been going to her.

She has gone through 2 dogs, and is currently on her third, a black Labrador named Rumor. (Her previous dogs were yellow Labs named Frosty and Jasmine.)

Since she knows that we also own a black Lab, sometimes she will let Jennifer, our 11 year old take Rumor out if she has to "go". But yes, otherwise, it really is dangerous for Seeing Eye dogs to be distracted by people trying to pet them.
