I finally took off the acryllics that i have had on for about a 1 1/2 years........and my poor nails are a mess.....

anyone out there know what to do to get them back to somewhat normal as my hands are now very ugly...

Get a regular manicure and settle in to wait for the new nails to grow out. It will take a while.

Go to qvc.com and buy Pro Strong, it is a calcium bonder, It takes longer than they say, but it helps make your nails stronger.

Go to the local drug store and buy Vasaline Intensive Care Healthy Hand Essentials.

I had my nails on for over 10 years, took them off in October, I have been doing the prostrong every day and the Intensive Care for 4 weeks, my nails are actually strong enough to grow. I have the worst nails, they always looked like I bit them, but they just would break off almost daily. Granted, they don't look as good as they did with acrylic on them, but I can actually do a French Mainicure on them, I am thrilled. I really think the Intensive care has helped the most, my cuticles look better, my hands are soft.

Give it at least a month. Think of the money you are saving! I was spending over $60 every month. The Pro Strong was like $30 and the Intensive Care was $4. Expect them to be really weak until all the nail has grown out from where the product was.

Wow!! Does this mean you are never going to have your nails done ever again?! Think of the money you'll be saving. Maybe we should hit the chinese place before my work hours are cut !!

It took six months for my nails to get anything close to normal again. Good luck, I hope mickeyfan's suggestions help.

Thanks mickeyfan,

I just went to CVS and picked up the Vaseline hand cream and a bottle of "nailtiques" which I think on the same idea as Pro Strong.... and the total cost was less than getting a fill, so I just did them and put polish on too but it just isnt the same.....

I know it will take a long time for my nails to actually grow where they didnt "drill them" but I just have to get through this "Serena did you say 6 months? :( :( :( Oh my this is going to be long huh?

My hands are seen everyday by a lot of people (help how can I not get them done again).

Thanks for your help
Tammie

go buy yourself a little electric nail buffer. It looks like a toothbrush but has different buffing heads. Use the softest one to buff out the rough nails, and then only use clear polish.

I have had acrylics on and off for years. When I decide to give my own nails a rest, I use this. Take good vitamins, and your normal nails should be back in 6 weeks or so.

in about 2 weeks. but i only had aclics on for a week before they started chipping and coming loose some of which is due to things did not nail job.

I think your nail growth will depend on how your nails grew before. My nails were always strong and healthy. That didn't change after I took the acrylics off. I cut my nails down, took a metal nail file, and buffed them out. My nails were back to normal fairly quickly (less than two weeks).

Good luck and just remember how much money you are going to be saving!

My DH got me a gift certificate to have these nails put on for my birthday a couple of years ago. I have never been able to grow out my own nails because when they get the least bit long it drives me crazy. I got them put on and felt like I had 10 surfboards attached to my hands! Drove me nuts! I was so glad to finally get them off when they grew out! He won't be doing that again (hopefully)!

I hope your nails get back in shape soon!

I used to get wraps put on my nails for years and I took them off. It does take a while for your nails to stop being so paper thin. There's no reason why you can't get your nails done, just get regular manicures.

I had mine taken off right after Christmas. They were so thin that they hurt if I bumped them on anything or washed my hands in hot water. They still don't look great and are breaking frequently, but I am keeping them verrrrry short for the time being until the ends quit breaking. I have been using the Sally Hansen Hard As Nails treatments to try and help them. I think it will just take time. I'm still glad I had them taken off though. I was tired of the time commitment and money. I will probably go back and get a manicure every so often. Hang in there.!

You know what Pooh93,

I think that is one of the reasons that I took them off. I just had them done again on the 10th and yesterday 2 of them were broken in half the long way, and I just wasnt in the mood to go and sit there and give them more of my money and my time to get them fixed.. So I just said that is it they are coming off.

Now maybe I can do something else with the every other friday afternoon that I was spending there. Just think 20$ every other week, and sometimes more when they break.

Thanks for all your tips and maybe I will look for a nail buffer today, (going to the mall with a friend to get disney $$), buy some vitamins and nurture my nails back to health. Thanks again to all who responded and did so quickly.
