I just received a really weird e-mail...

Ofcourse I haven't opened it, as I don't recognize the sender which is:

mailsweeper@scottish-southern.co.uk

And the subject line reads "your message contained a virus"

WE have gotten those, too. Not from the same address but ours say your email contained a virus, mail returned undeliverable.

Something like that.

My DH will have to clean out our entire system, which means, there goes all my genealogy research.
Everything is potentially infected.

Don't open it, it could have a virus attached to it. Delete. THen I suggest running your virus scan for the hey of it!

Well, I haven't sent any e-mails in a few days, so I simply deleted it.

Not real computer literate, but, the way I understand the SoBig virus (which this sounds like) is this...

SoBig infects a computer. It scans that computers e-mail stored addresses (as in the address book). It then sends out emails to other computers with that "lifted" address as the sender.

Is that as clear as mud? It doesn't mean that your computer is infected, nor does it mean that the emails originated from your computer. Just from someone who had your e-mail addy in their address book.

Then, when the sent e-mail gets rejected by anti-virus software, it sends back a return message rejecting the e-mail.

If your deleted items aren't set to empty out each time you exit your e-mail program, make sure you empty it.
