for March 2003 - Buena Vista, Downtown is $89; Coronado Springs is $109 and Port Orleans is $109. I guess I'll just stay on the waiting list for Contemporary at $89 per night!

You didn't mention when in March but I believe the entire month is peak season (loads of spring breaks). I would reserve POR at $109 for your entire stay and stay on the list. Perhaps half your stay will open up for CR and you can experience both. There is a chance that your entire stay will not open up at CR so a back up plan is good. I read here just recently of someone trying for SOG overflow and Jan. being all filled. This is just my opinion but I would grab POR as a backup plan before it is gone!!!!

You can't make a SOG overflow reservation AND stay on the waiting list. Must choose one or the other.

We got the Contemporary for two stays in May for $105 (Standard) and $110 (Lake View) via SoG.

Thanks for the info. I thought that I had done this very thing, but it was a code that I used for my backup plan. The waiting list came through for me in the end (it was just one night I needed). I wonder why you aren't allowed to "cover you bases"?

Because it's not fair to those hotels who are kind enough to provide discounted rates and rooms to the SoG guests who can't get into SoG. Look at it this way (and this is how it was explained to me when I was working there): Guest makes a ressy at Hotel A and goes on SoG waiting list. 5 days prior to the arrival, guest is called. Guest cancels Hotel A ressy and takes SoG. Hotel will find out about the cancellation either after 5pm that same day or about 8am the following AM (depending on who Hotel A is). There's a good chance that Hotel A will now have to eat that room for the night. When you consider how lengthy the waiting list is and how many are contacted, there would be a LOT of Hotel As. It would probably happen enough that the hotels would stop offering rooms and discounted rates because they would lose money. This is why it's not allowed, although some guests do it any way (even after they know they aren't supposed to). For a while, I had talked my manager into printing a list of those in overflow and comparing it with who's on the waiting list. Those duplicate people were called and told to make a choice or we would make it for them (our choice was to remove them from the list and let them keep their ressy in overflow). Considering the lack of caring of the current management in reservations, I doubt this is still being done, but you never know.

Also, don't just assume that SOG overflow rates are the best rates you will find. We have done better at the same resort at the same time using a code rather than an overflow rate. I'm usually one of the folks that believes you shouldn't hold 2 reservations at once, however, I have been on the wait list for SOG and also had a reservation at a Disney resort using a code. By my way of thinking a waitlist is NOT the same thing as holding a reservation. I can see why SOG would not want to have someone on their waitlist while also holding an overflow reservation.

I didn't realize that the waiting list could get you a room that close to check in. I thought 30 days out would be it because of the 30 day penalty. My "wait-list" day came through for me 1 1/2 mths ahead of time. I called AKL that day and dropped the ressie on my code room. From what I have been reading, all of the savannah view code rooms are sold out now, so I think mine was snapped up. I can see your point about "hotel A's" being left holding the bag 5 days out. But then I feel for folks waiting on the SOG list airline tickets in hand with no way of knowing if something will open up for sure.

They can, and do, call up to the day before arrival off the waiting list. Although they don't get as many cancellations w/i 30 days as they do o/side of it because of the penalty, they still get plenty.

As for feeling sorry for people, these people are made well aware that the waiting list is NOT a guarantee of a room. That it is their responsibility to not wait until the last minute to find themselves a room and SoG is happy to assist them whenever they want to be removed from the waiting list. Any one who buys tickets w/o a reservation knows they are taking a chance. This area still hasn't recovered from 9/11 so, there are plenty of rooms to be had, although it may not be exactly where they want to stay.
