and they want me to come back in 12 hours. I thought it was my kidneys, but now I'm not sure because they didn't tell me exactly what they think it is. They gave me a prescription for Toradol and all kinds of literature about abdominal pain and how it can be an indicator of many different things.

They want you to come back in 12 hours for what? Tests or just to see if your better?

Abdominal pain can mean tons of different things. I would think if they were really really worried though that they would have kept you there.

{{{HUGS}}} hope you feel better!

Sorry that you are feeling bad. Hope you get some answers and relief real soon!

Whatever it is I hope you're feeling better in no time.

Beth, they want to do a recheck and maybe more tests. I'm wondering if the reason they didn't keep me was because I don't have insurance right now (I have it for the kids, but not for me.....I'll be getting it through school in the fall.) I have never had an ER tell me to come back to them in a certain amount of time rather than just coming back if it got worse or going to a recheck with my normal physician.

I would certainly hope not!! There is a sign on the door to both of our hospitals here that says something along the lines of

If you are in need of immediant medical service we can not refuse to see you due to your ability to pay or insurance status!

I would hope to goodness its that way everywhere!! What type symptoms do you have?

I would think kidneys would be pain in your back or legs. I don't think I've ever head abdominal pain with kidney problems.

I would think they would've said what kind of thing they're looking for. I hope you're feeling ok tonight, Becki.

Beth, I had lower abdominal pain and back pain (which I have had before with both kidney stones and kidney infections.) The sign here says that you have the right to be stabilized whether you can pay or not and whether you have insurance or not. Sorry that I didn't answer last night. My Internet connection went out and I decided to go to sleep. I'll update you guys after I go back today.
Browneyes, I've never heard of kidney pain in your legs (that's never where it's affected me before.)

I hope you are feeling better.

I have had the e.r. try to send me home because they couldn't figure out what was wrong and I had excellent insurance. I refused to leave and it turned out it was my appendix.

It happened to me once before - I was sent home from the E.R. 16 weeks pregnant and in severe pain (Doc tried to tell me I was constipated) - I passed a huge kidney stone a day later.

In defense of the ER

There is a huge difference between being stabilized and "we will become your primary care physician."

That being said, ER doctors are not specialists in the Kidneys or Asthma, which you also seem to use them alot for. You can get much better care, faster care, and probably cheaper care, by finding a Dr. who is trained in those specialties and using them to treat your illness instead of the Emergency Room.

JMHO. I hope you feel better Honeywolfe.

Toby's Friend, I didn't have a problem with the ER (wasn't mad at them or anything and I understand the difference between "stabilize you" and "keep you in.") They did a wonderful job. Usually, I use VCU Student Health but when I get sick on the weekends, they're not open so I go to the ER. I am feeling a little better today. They did look for appendicitis and ended up deciding that it was just a severe kidney infection and a kidney stone (that I knew I had). They said they could keep me if I wanted them to but they could also let me go. It was up to me and in the end, I decided to go home (because of the expense.) If it gets worse, I'm supposed to go back. I look like I've been beaten up because my veins did not cooperate with their needles. Thanks for all the well wishes.
