I have an account - but am CLUELESS. I see where I can search for people . My SIL is on there with some ridiculous amount of friends (like 200) and I know some of those people.....what I don't get is I don't really care to talk to those people I just wanna know what they are up to. BUt I don't see that FB is like MS in that since - or am I compleltely wrong?
On MS I found an old friend (he was in our wedding eons ago) & I saw how he's gone off the deep-end (LOL - WAY liberal compared to when we knew him - we'd probably not be his friend now)

ANYWAY - am I missing something with FB? cause all I've seen is some tiny pics of my SIL's friends & not a darn thing about them.

Just followed someone elses friend list & see tons of folks I know - but again I don't really care to email any of those people - I'd just love to know where they live, how many kiddos they have, if they're still married, etc

Fill me in please....

Most people have their profile set to only where their "friends" can see them. So to see their more personal information, you'll need to send them a friend invite. Then you can see their profiles.

I love FB - keeps me in touch with people and has helped me find so many that I thought I had lost forever! :goodvibes

LOL! THat's exactly why I love Facebook. No random stranger from my past can snoop and judge me. That's the appeal - it's relatively private.

I have lots of friends on facebook. Some, like my kids, siblings, etc. I keep in close contact with (using chat, etc.) and some I just see their status updates and don't actually communicate with. Go ahead and friend request a few of your SIL's friends that you know. You can communicate with them more if you want, and kind of ignore them if you don't.

I love Facebook - it keeps me connected with friends - it's really addicting!!!

Love Facebook. I live across the country from my nieces and newphew and it keeps me up to date with their lives. They post pictures that I would probably never see otherwise. I can comment on stuff that they post.
Love it!
Also have connected with friends from long ago.

You know, I don't get it either.

My friend got me onto it, and I just don't understand.

I also thought I had fixed myself so that if someone "facebooked" me, I'd get some sort of e-mail notification, but that doesn't seem to be happening.

I love facebook! It's addicting. And you make the experience what you want it to be. Some of my friends and I exchange the fun things, like flair and snowballs. Others don't want to participate, and we respect that.

I keep up with my nieces in AZ, see what jewelry one of my craft fair buddies is making, send flair to my YoYo sisters, and enjoy my cousin's pictures from his adventures.

Disney Doll, go to your facebook page. Click on the settings tab - it's on the toolbar at the top, near the right side. On the next screen, click on the notifications tab. The tabs are on top of the box of settings. Notifications is the middle tab. This brings up the listing of notification options that you can set on or off. Make your selections, then click on the save changes button on the bottom of the selection list. I apologize if this is too simplistic for you. I work with many people who are not as computer saavy as my DISBoard friends!

Enjoy!

I am enjoying Facebook. You do have to reach out to people, though. They might not magically come to you at first. You can make "friend requests" from other people's friends lists or you can try to search for people in various ways - by name, email addresses, school graduation dates, etc. I know a lot of women, myself included, who use first name maiden name married name.

so last night I went ahead & emailed 1 friend that I just got a Christmas card from - that's all the contact we have any more - once a year - but she was my maid of honor many years ago we were great friends.....

ANd lo & behold I look at my emails this a.m. & 5 people have added me! :rotfl2: Now I've gotta go figure out what all that means.

Congrats! Feel free to PM me if you have more Facebook questions, or just post them here. I'm subscribed.

Enjoy! :woohoo:

so what does it mean when someone sneds friend reccommendations? Thats what this friend wrote on my wall.

FB is similar to MS in the fact that everyone can read my posts on someones wall - right?

So even though it's semi private I could be friends with someone who has me listed on their friends list thats a total CREEP & that person is able to see everything - right?

Gee I sound like I'm an 80 yo trying to figure out how to use a computer for the 1st time! :scared1:

Do a google search of your name and facebook. So "Sally Smith Facebook" and see if your picture shows up. Or better yet, your kids' pictures. It's not as secure as people think. My friend insists only her "friends" on facebook can see her info. A simple google of her name and facebook shows her picture and her kids' pictures.

It reminds me of early 1990's when the internet first was popular. People would forget how to be real friends bc they were only chatting online.

What's the difference between Facebook, myspace and classmates.com??

I don't quite get it either. Like the OP, I'd love to see where they're living now and how many kids.

These are people on Facebook that your friend thinks you know. You can send these people friend requests if you want to. Or not. It's entirely up to you!

It depends on your privacy settings. Default is if you post on your friend's wall, all of their friends can see what you wrote. I use what I call the Rule of Internet Communication: If you don't want the world to see it, don't post it in a public place (DISBoards, Facebook, MySpace, etc).

If you want privacy, send your friend private facebook messages. Look on the toolbar at the top of the facebook screen. Just left of center screen you'll find the INBOX. Click on that. It has a compose message link so you can send private messages that only your friend can see. I use this a lot to get addresses and phone numbers.

 I had to learn all of this too! Enjoy!

If you don't want your information shared with the public, sign on to your Facebook account. Select settings from the toolbar at the top. Under the settings tab, find the privacy link and click on the manage link on the right. Here you can set whether or not you have a publicly searchable profile and if so, what the public can see. :thumbsup2

My profile is set to searchable, but you cannot see my profile picture or my friends listing. You can send me a message or a friend request though.

I hope this helps your friend. Let me know if you need more information!

Ditto that! I just actually grew a backbone for probably the first time in my life and contacted a guy I had a bit of a thing with close to 15 years ago, not to "start anything" with him but just to see what he was up to. Turns out he's doing well and we've been chatting like crazy ever since. This was somebody I kinda thought I'd never see or hear from again.

I've also had a bunch of people from HS (again, people I thought I'd probably never talk to again, unless I ran into them at a reunion or something) send me friend requests, and it's been really cool to see how everybody's doing now, all spread across the country like they are. :goodvibes
