MIL gave us her slicer which is probably from the 70's :) It's very basic so a cheapo one from Walmart would probably do the job.

Last night I baked a 3 pound roast beef and tonight DH sliced it into thin, deli style pieces! I'm so happy to beat the deli! I paid $3 a pound and the deli wants $9.99 pound for their roast beef:)

Your right..i should do that instead of paying the deli to just realy slice the meat for me. It saves money for sure

As one that has chopped off part of my thumb and then sliced off down to the bone another time- for me to use a meat slicer I would need the special gloves they sell. Those non-cutting kind. My cutting disasters were with a food mandolin.

We hadn't used ours in quite some time and our DS expressed interest in it so we gave it to him. Wish we had it back.

I've been thinking aboutbdoing this. We use about a pound of deli meat in a week. If I cook a 3 lb. Roast and slice it up, can I freeze the meat in 1 lb packages? Otherwise I'd be afraid the meat would spoil before we got a chance to use it all.

My mom filleted her hand nicely with a mandolin. Couldn't be stitched because it took it off in layers. Once she left the ER she went right home and threw it away.

We do this all the time. Roast beef, turkey, chicken, ham. A lot cheaper than our preferred brand of cold cuts - Boars Head. Plus a lot healthier - no fillers or preservatives. The meat doesn't last that long in my house to have to freeze it. There are 3 of us and we pack our lunch every day. One is a teenager - so you know how that goes.

My slicer is fairly new - only about 8 years old. My slicer has a plastic shield that you push the meat with, it would be very hard to cut your hand if you were using the slicer properly. In other words - if the meat is not slicing properly, shut the slicer off, get a better hold of it with the plastic shield, and turn it back on.

This week we sliced grilled boneless chicken breasts with a chipolte BBQ sauce. Actually sliced tomatoes on it too to put on the sandwiches.

We had one and I could not stand to be in the room when DH used it. We got rid of it. Too dangerous.

My grocery store meat department will cut meat for me. I have had them slice the roasts deli slices before. Then just cook at home for a few minutes. I have also bought very large roasts which are less per pound and have them do stew meat, steaks and even hamburger before. Never a problem.

Yeah I would slice off my fingers.

I bought a slicer (and a grinder) for about $30 a piece on eBay. Some of the best money I've ever spent. That said, I'm also big into making my own meats, like bacon, grinding my own hamburger, etc.

If you can cook a good roast beef it's definitely cheaper than buying from the deli!

I agree! We have a cheap one too, and it works fine. A neighbor has a big stainless one. It's amazing, but I don't have the storage space (or the $$) for that.

The posters who are mentioning a mandolin, that is not what I am talking about....it's a meat slicer with a safety guide to slice the meat. Sorry you got hurt on your appliance.

Edit: Whoops! Wrong thread! (Curse you tabbed browser!)

I only WISH I had a meat slicer....

The price comparison isn't quite right because you are comparing price for raw meat (before shrinkage) to cooked meat (after shrinkage). It's still much much cheaper though. :thumbsup2

I know it's different just saying that if I almost lost a finger on my mandolin imagine what I would do with a slicer!?!:scared1:

And am I the only one thinking of Kramer from Seinfeld? The episode where he got one and Elaine used it to slice off part of the heel on her shoe because it was uneven! Then they sliced some meat to slide under a door to a cat trapped in an apartment.
